hello everyone. I am preparing for the IELTS exam. kindly read my essay and suggests me with better writing skills. TOPIC “Newspaper less important nowadays” agree or disagree? Comments

Answer: Few people considered newspapers less important nowadays but others do differ with the statement In present world the demand of newspapers are declined as the people are more tend towards news and updates from internet and they focus least on hands-on paper as they found them of no use as the same stuff is available through internet (in the form of online newspaper). On the other hand people do have collection of newspaper piled up and they found them of no use. People are now well thought out that newspaper printing is useless and waste of resources; above mention are the views of few people not everyone. Moreover other people agree with the fact that reading newspaper online is better than collecting and piling them at home but they also don’t let the fact go away that continuously reading newspaper online may affect the eyes and it may create eyesight disease. After mentioning few general public views about newspaper I will proceed further along with the advantages of newspapers ,Firstly newspapers consists of interesting articles and write-ups that provides vast knowledge ,Secondly we can improve reading skills ,grammar vocabulary and speaking power too. Old newspapers can be used in projects by students in the form of recycle material as an example of solid waste management. I will conclude by saying that newspaper is less important for few people but for other people it is still very useful nowadays.

Scientists agree that many people are eating too much junk food and it is damaging their health. Some people think that these problems can be solved by educating people to eat less junk food. Other people believe that education will not work. Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.

hello dear Liz. I’m going to take my exam on 10th of July. Is it possible if these topics would come in my exam too? thanks in advance

Yes, these topics as well as the common essay topics could easily appear with different wording.

' src=

I’m confused. The predicted topics don’t have any essay type. How to know the essay type of predicted topics that u have highlighted?

There are topics, not questions. As long as you can prepare ideas for topics, you can adapt them to any type of essay.

' src=

Hii , Liz I’m beginner in this field Nd don’t know how can I collect good ideas to do better in writing task 2 … And how to practice for it

See my Ideas E-book: https://elizabethferguson.podia.com/

Hi Liz, I was wondering if your correction service is active now.

Regards, Aya

Sorry, not at present. Once my health has improved, I’ll set it up.

' src=

Thank you Liz. I scored a band 8 overall!

That’s brilliant!! Very well done to you 🙂

' src=

Greeting Liz. I hope you’re good. I prepared for IELTS academic in just three weeks using your materials. I needed a minimum of 7 in all aspects and an overall of 7.5. These are my scores: Listening 8.5, Reading 8.5, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.5. Overall 8.0. Thanks alot for your kindness. God bless you.

That’s a great score! Well done 🙂

Hi Liz, I love your videos in YouTube and your blog has been extremely helpful for my preparation of IELTS exam. Thank you. Sending you lots of love and best wishes from Bhutan 💜❤

Thanks 🙂 Greetings to Bhutan!!

' src=

Hello Liz, I just gave a mock writing test and it deducted my band score by 1 for using a clichés which was ‘a waste of time’. Will the same happen in the real test? Can you give a list of other clichés which we cannot use in the test [ apart from the ones given on the site ].

I’m not sure precisely the expressions you use as you mention only one. The expression “a waste of time” is completely fine to use in any Writing Task 2 essay. It is idiomatic, suitable for formal writing and good to use.

Okay. Thank you.😇

' src=

Thank you do much Liz.i started reading your tips recently and that Is when I started to understand what I need to do.your content is so easy to understand.

I’m so glad. I built this website to make learning IELTS easy 🙂

' src=

I’ve purchased your grammar book and all I can say is I should’ve bought this book ages ago. It was really useful and there so many “oo..” moments when I was learning using the pdf. I also agree with you that it’s not just for students who are taking Ielts, but also for life! this has helped me to unlearn and learn the correct ways of speaking and writing English. Thanks once again.

Thank you so much for leaving your comment. I really love hearing feedback on my work, particularly on that Grammar E-book. I poured my health and soul into it and tried to find ways to make grammar easy. I often feel that grammar is written by academics for academic people, but not for normal everyday people. I always felt that if grammar was explained and illustrated more clearly, it wouldn’t be so difficult. This really gives me a great boost. I’m going in the right direction with my teaching. Thank you very very much 🙂

' src=

Hi liz, I just want to express my joy on your comeback. I tried to contact you concerning your health. With your recent activity on your website, i am convinced that your have recovered.

Unfortunately, I haven’t recovered yet. I feel a bit stronger which is why I’m trying to get new posts out on my site. Hopefully this year will see me get stronger as times passes.

' src=

Praying for you, Liz. Please know that I have been learning from all your posts. You are a very smart teacher and content-creator. All are useful!

God bless you with better and improved health this 2022

Thank you 🙂

' src=

Thanks mum wish you speedy recovery.

If children behave badly their parents should take responsibility and also be punished?do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

In this contemporary era, some people think that if kids’ behaviour is not good, then their parents should be held responsible and punished. While I argue to some extent that parents are responsible, I am not in solidarity with the view of punishing the parents for children’s misdeeds.

To commence with, the main reason why parents are responsible is that they do not focus on children’s moral education. To explain it, parents should teach their offspring about moral values for their child’s betterment. Also, parents should not be disrespectful and abusive to their children, as it significantly impacts individuals’ mindsets. For instance, there was a survey on “Times Now News Channel” parents who care about their kids and teach them moral values, their children behave well with others. As a result, parents must give their children moral and better life lessons because it is beneficial for them in the long term.

On the contrary, parents are not always responsible for the upbringing of their children. To explain, parents do not know about their children, what they do at school and outside their homes. Also, they need to get information about their children’s friend circle. For example, parents are usually busy with their work. They do not know what their child is doing when they are with their friends. Hence, punishing them is an imprudent approach.

In conclusion, although I agree to some extent that parents are responsible, parents are the best decision-makers for their offspring; therefore, the blame should not go to them constantly because they are not with all the time with their children.

People should keep all the money they earn and should not pay taxes to the state. Do you agree or disagree?

Some people say that art subjects such as music, drama and creative writing are an essential part of education, and every school should include them in its syllabus.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give your opinion and examples from your own experience.

Model Answer

A few people assert that art subjects such as music, drama, and creative writing are an essential part of education, and every school should include them in its syllabus. I agree with this statement. Art helps in the growth of the creative faculties of the brain, like the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Moreover, art helps children to destress after long hours of study.

Art subjects such as music, drama and creative writing are essential part of education. Many neurological studies were conducted on children to learn about the benefits of art education. Many scientists found that learning to play a new instrument helps the brain’s fostering, and the synapses of neurons get strengthened. Creative writing causes the parietal-temporal region of the brain to get activated, thus strengthening the frontal cortex. For example, many studies have depicted that students or children who participate in various creative subjects have more problem-solving capabilities than their counterparts. They try to solve problems with an optimistic viewpoint, and these children become more confident than others.

Moreover, art helps children to destress. Hours of analytical learning in schools like mathematics, science and social studies can cause tiredness of the brain. Children feel joyful, contented and happy while learning to play a new instrument or act in a drama or paint or write something creatively. The children feel relaxed and at ease while doing something from the art subject. A recent study has revealed that art decreases cortisol, a stress hormone in students. For example, those schools that have embedded art subjects in their syllabus have seen more productivity in their students. Students of such schools participate more actively in class and are more attentive. They even perform well while answering the questions of the teachers.

So, it is not wrong to say that art subjects such as creative writing, music and drama should be an integral part of the school curriculum.

Some people say that dangerous sports should be banned since they are deadly and life-threatening.

Do you agree or disagree with this viewpoint?

A few individuals opine that dangerous physical activities such as sky diving and skiing are risky, and higher authorities must proscribe them. Even though violent sports help people keep fit, I completely agree that they should be prohibited because it has increased the death rate and is for mere thrill-seekers.

One of the primary reasons some people assert that individuals must refrain from participating in adrenaline-raising sports is the increased death toll for its partakers. When athletes take part in training sessions or competitions, they undergo rigorous exercises in an unfriendly environment, which may lead to serious health issues such as broken bones or muscular dystrophy. During treatment, most sports stars may become disabled for life or death. For example, according to National Geographic statistics, in 2017, in the US, more than 150 skiers were buried in avalanches, although most of them were highly skilled. Thus, adventurous sports cause the death of many enthusiasts who venture into them.

Furthermore, people who are involved in dangerous sports are mere thrill-seekers. In other words, professionals tend to exhibit exquisite talents and unique movements to thrill their audience and gain cheap popularity at the expense of their safety. As a result, sports stars get unmatched excitement for themselves from their performances, which are meaningless to society. For instance, a skydiver, James Owen, confessed in an interview with a national geographic reporter that he went into skydiving because of the profound feeling of excitement that he derives from it.

In conclusion, although partakers of extreme sports are keen on continuing, I am in solidarity with the view that there should be a ban on them because of the physical risk involved and the increased incidence of mortality.

Examiner’s Reports Summary (2022-2023)

This is a summary of the key points made over the reports from the 2022 and 2023 exam season. I have avoided repeating similar points made in previous years (you will find earlier blogs on these) or question specific comments in order to focus on the points that apply generically across all papers.

  • Exploring the meaning of the words in the question . For example whether a ‘coherent solution’ is being made based on philosophy or science or both.
  • Contemporary examples : cost of living crisis, public sector strikes and current government scandals to extend answers.
  • Planning at the start of an essay to help with clarity of arguments and points.
  • Focused directly on Q.
  • Outlined what was going to be argued at the beginning with a hypothesis and reasons that are then argued throughout.
  • Carefully selected material.
  • Subtleties of the thinkers and/ or theories are appreciated.

Areas to Improve/ Things to Avoid:

  • Misunderstood or misread the wording of the question
  • If Q asks for one person or argument e.g. Ruether or SOL do not compare or go into great length of another thinker/ idea.
  • Adding the question at the end of each paragraph does not mean the paragraph/ essay focuses on the q.
  • Chronology of thinkers.
  • Lack of timed essay practice.
  • Very long introductions .
  • Used what seemed like pre prepared responses .
  • For compare Q – compare as go along.
  • The A01 was weaker than the A02.
  • Trying to force in extra thinkers .
  • Minimal explanation of key ideas or assumed understanding of these by marker.
  • Lost focus spending too much time discussing other theories.
  • Conflating ideas e.g. Mill and Bentham or Prime Mover with First Mover (Aquinas).
  • Avoid lengthy description/ anecdotes e.g Freud’s stages, parables and Bible stories
  • Do not to simply repeat the bullet points from the spec e.g many other possible descriptions of Jesus exist.
  • GCSE type description with a Biblical quote e.g SOL
  • Hybrid of Teleo and Cosmo – confusion of what points go into which argument.
  • Strengths and weaknesses within the topic itself with less reliance on comparison with another view or scholar.
  • Evaluated by juxtaposition of different views , rather than develop reasons why one was stronger/ weaker.
  • Use of rhetorical questions did not add to the evaluation.

I just want to point out one comment made in the 2022 ethics paper that confused me. For the question ‘ Assess the view that good, bad, right and wrong are meaningless ethical terms .’ I would assume that this is quite a generic meta ethics question in which you could approach it from any or all angles. However the feedback said, “ response entirely on emotivism and considered the arguments for and against this particular theory. These responses often scored very high marks .” I am unsure how this question leads towards an entire emotivism answer and how this did not read as a pre-prepared answer (as often commented on in these reports).

ToKToday

What are the examiners thinking ? (ToK Exhibition)

Daniel Trump

  • November 4, 2022
  • Student Support , ToK Exhibition

Experienced teachers of ToK well know that the Subject Report is one of the most important documents for guiding students to do well in ToK.

The Subject Report is written by the Chief Examiner after each Exam Session, it is an aggregation of the main points arising from the individual reports that each examiner has to write after they have marked the ToK Essays & Exhibitions. Therefore it gives you great information on:

  • Common Mistakes made.
  • Strong or effective approaches to questions,
  • And most crucially – the examiners operationalise the assessment criteria, in other words – they tell us what they’re looking for, or what they mean, by some of the more vague descriptors in the assessment criteria.

The TokToday 1 page summary of the M22 ToK Subject Report on The Exhibition

The May 22 ToK Subject Report is available from the Programme Resource Centre. I have summarised the May 22 ToK Subject Report – The section on The ToK Exhibition is linked here , and the section on the ToK Essay is linked here.

My summaries are useful as an aide memoir, or a teaching resource to be used with students. However, I encourage you to read the full report. There are a lot more details in the full report than I can fit into a one page summary.

Why focus on the May 22 Subject Report ?

The May 22 ToK Subject Report is particularly interesting because it is the first time we have feedback from the Examiners on the ToK Exhibition, and it really clarifies some of the things that we were not sure about going into the May 22 exam session. If you are currently preparing students for the ToK Exhibition the May 22 Subject Report is required reading.

This post focusses on what the Subject report tells us about  the ToK Exhibition, there is a section in the report on The Essay, but that will have to wait for another video:

Key points in M22 Subject on The ToK Exhibition.

1. Object Specificity.

Specific objects are far better than generic objects. Many of the subsequent marks awarded for the Exhibition partly rely on the specificity of the object – so this point is important. Further, it is easier for students if the object has some personal link to their own lived experience – this is more in fitting with the Exhibition which is supposed to be a reflection on how ToK Manifests itself in the real world. The subject report goes into some detail about what is meant by a specific object -it really is worth reading, personally I think that the examiners have made it very clear for us.

2. Knowledge Links.

The explanation of the link between object & the prompt needs to be about knowledge – not about the the object, or any wider real world issues – it has to be about knowledge. This may seem obvious, however I recently saw an Exhibition commentary which the teacher thought had been undermarked by the Examiners. On reading the commentary it was immediately clear that the student had written very little about knowledge, they had written a lot about the real world context of the object, but very little about knowledge. A simple if crude test of this is to simply count the number of times the student has used the word “knowledge” – if they’re not using the word they’re probably not writing about knowledge.

3. Specific Contributions.

The contribution of the object to unpacking the prompt needs to be specific & distinct to that individual object. This means that the objects probably need to be varied / different types of object. Further, This is why I ask my students to construct 3 arguments relating to the prompt BEFORE picking 3 objects. This makes it much easier to score highly on this criteria.

4. Evidence.

The report clarifies what is meant by evidence, it could include a study, documentary evidence, a news item, a thoughtful or expert opinion.

Final Thoughts

Finally there is an interesting paragraph in the subject report that explains that the Exhibition is meant to be a reflection on how ToK manifests itself in the real world, it says that

“ candidates are not expected to answer the prompt but to show how their objects are interesting to help reflection about the prompt and explore it. It needs to be a TOK discussion so candidates should be encouraged to use TOK concepts…, ” May 22 ToK Subject Report, IB

In this we paragraph have a couple of insights which were not previously clear to me , and I think will be of great help in the future:

1. We should try to bring the ToK Concepts out in the Exhibition – I’m going to ask my students to focus on 2 or 3 concepts in their Exhibition.

2. More importantly – it’s a reflection which can be left unanswered, this invites a wider ToK discussion, which can link back the student’s role as a knower with the prompt – oh happy days !

You can find more thoughts on the ToK Exhibition here , including a useful structure planner.

If you are a student who wants help with your ToK Exhibition please check out our student support pages here.

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

essays from examiners 2022

It almost time! Millions of Americans across the country Monday are preparing to witness the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse as it passes over portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

It's a sight to behold and people have now long been eagerly awaiting what will be their only chance until 2044 to witness totality, whereby the moon will completely block the sun's disc, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness.

That being said, many are curious on what makes the solar eclipse special and how is it different from a lunar eclipse.

The total solar eclipse is today: Get the latest forecast and everything you need to know

What is an eclipse?

An eclipse occurs when any celestial object like a moon or a planet passes between two other bodies, obscuring the view of objects like the sun, according to NASA .

What is a solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, presents a spectacular sight for viewers and confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

Partial eclipses, when some part of the sun remains visible, are the most common, making total eclipses a rare sight.

What is a lunar eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. When this happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

Lunar eclipses are often also referred to the "blood moon" because when the Earth's shadow covers the moon, it often produces a red color. The coloration happens because a bit of reddish sunlight still reaches the moon's surface, even though it's in Earth's shadow.

Difference between lunar eclipse and solar eclipse

The major difference between the two eclipses is in the positioning of the sun, the moon and the Earth and the longevity of the phenomenon, according to NASA.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, says NASA.

Another major difference between the two is that for lunar eclipses, no special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the spectacle and one can directly stare at the moon. However, for solar eclipses, it is pertinent to wear proper viewing glasses and take the necessary safety precautions because the powerful rays of the sun can burn and damage your retinas.
