Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan  resumes his much-anticipated comeback with “Jawan” (Hindi for “Soldier”), a high-toned action-adventure about a well-meaning terrorist and his crack team of hostage-taking girls with guns. 

Khan’s revival began a year ago with a prominent cameo in the otherwise meh mythofantastic superhero pic “ Brahmastra  Part One: Shiva .” Then in, January, he stormed the box office with the lead role in “ Pathaan ,” a manic spy thriller and the most recent installment in the Yash Raj cinematic universe. “Jawan” will probably delight Khan’s established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he’s comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish.

“Jawan” was produced by the star and his wife Gauri Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment production company, so it’s not surprising to see how well-worn and carefully navigated the movie’s contrived plot and conventional mood swings tend to be. This is a Shah Rukh Khan vehicle, and by now, that conjures certain formulaic expectations. Still, the makers of “Jawan” spend a little too much trying to convince viewers that we don’t  really  know Khan’s mysterious antihero, who, after an overproduced but still rousing flashback action sequence, takes a train-ful of commuters hostage. 

Khan’s character, soon revealed to be Azad, the warden of a women’s prison, seemingly executes a woman in a burqa, all while wearing a goofy bald cap, which he soon rips off. Khan, in character, rasps out his expectations-flouting demands to the generically incensed negotiator Narmada (Nayanthara): get the Agriculture Minister to pay off starving farmers’ extortionate loans, or more people will die.

“Jawan” careens from one twist to the next, fast enough that it almost doesn’t matter how familiar and ultimately staid its story and set pieces often are. A few plot twists are also easy enough to anticipate. Azad romances Narmada and charms her impressionable ten-year-old daughter Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta). He denounces various government officials and combats their corruption with a handful of bloody, media-amplified demonstrations. Azad speaks for the common people but behaves erratically, performing a little soft-shuffle dance surrounded by terrified commuters. He proudly and laboriously explains that he’s actually a good guy fighting the real enemy: public servants who do not serve the republic.

There’s an involved and agreeably goofy subplot that ties Narmada and Azad’s story with the movie’s opening scene, set 30 years prior in an unnamed village that may or may not be Tibet (somewhere near “India’s border,” terrorized by Asian soldiers in white star-studded green caps). If you’ve seen Shah Rukh Khan movies before, you won’t be especially surprised at how these two subplots tie together, though you may be delighted anyway. It’s a major plot twist that predictably takes over the back half of the plot and re-orients Azad’s plot so that viewers know that this time, unlike all the other times, it’s personal. 

This time, there’s a nefarious weapons dealer, Kalee (Vijay Sethupathi), who is as malicious as he is violent. There’s also a surprise cameo from a big Bollywood star, whose presence isn’t really a spoiler if you pay attention during the opening credits. And be on the lookout for a duet dance number led by Khan and Deepika Padukone, who have great chemistry, possibly because they know that, by now, they don’t have to really compete for viewers’ affection. Oh, and a couple of the fight scenes are maximalist show-stoppers despite being over-edited and under-directed. Loud and rote, sure, but never boring.

The main reason “Jawan” doesn’t deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, “Jawan” is unlike Khan’s last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns. Kudos to director Atlee, a former assistant director whose credits include the Rajinikanth vehicle “Enthiran” and its sequel “ 2.0 ,” and his creative team.

Most importantly, in “Jawan,” Khan looks more relaxed than in years past, toggling leisurely through his repertoire of tics and poses. He looks especially comfortable in undemanding musical numbers, and he still gives great Blue Steel looks every time he turns on a slow-mo heel to pout at viewers’ and/or co-stars. Shah Rukh Khan is still a star, baby, and “Jawan” uses him about as well as his fans might hope.

Khan even looks good delivering a corny but impassioned speech later in the movie. As Azad, Khan reminds us that he’s just like you and me, the apathetic public who, despite our best intentions, have not always exercised good judgment when voting for government officials. There’s a general election in India next year, and while the makers of “Jawan” could have otherwise taken bigger risks, their efforts are appreciated.

Jawan review – Shah Rukh Khan vehicle goes like a runaway train

With flair, Khan plays a godly badass, dandyish army vet and a sweetheart with a prospective stepdaughter in an undisciplined showcase of his talents

C hasing January’s crowdpleasing comeback Pathaan , here’s further confirmation of Shah Rukh Khan’s status as reigning, benevolent King of Bollywood. Where his earlier film expounded on established formula, Khan’s latest stretches its arms wider and demonstrates flickers of idiosyncratic vision. It is properly pan-Indian: the emergent Tamil action stylist Atlee imports South Indian cinema’s characteristic rowdiness and social conscience, alerting the mass audience to pressing regional concerns – before apparently losing control over his material. A star vehicle that functions like a runaway train, Jawan covers a lot of ground in surprising fashion at full throttle – but that’s also a polite way of admitting it’s utterly all over the place.

Its surest organising principle is its lead actor, shuffling knowingly and wittily through a range of personas. From his opening line (“who am I?”), Khan draws us into wondering what relation the bandaged warrior liberating a village in a prologue has to the gruff baldie laying siege to Mumbai’s metro, and the prison warden clinging to a second chance at love. A one-man Cloud Atlas , Jawan is a puzzle movie where the star proves the puzzle; it’s a great showcase for Khan to play everything under the sun: godly badass, dandyish army vet, total sweetheart with a prospective stepdaughter. There’s ego involved, undeniably, but few stars in any cinema could model such radically diverse hats with this much flair.

Less smooth are the moving parts around him, a whirlwind of ideas good, bad and flagrantly pilfered that suggests this project would have benefited from one script editor for every five Shah Rukhs. Atlee maintains a frenzied momentum, but he has to, lest we pause to consider the preposterous tosh this plot keeps pushing our way. Once our hero’s genesis is resolved, we’re left with another headscratcher: how a movie that features cinema’s lamest Matrix and Christopher Nolan allusions could also generate a tremendous stretch of highway-bound carnage, as thrilling as anything could Hollywood manage. Jawan will prove no more enduring than Pathaan in the Khan pantheon, but it’s a semi-fascinating display of star power, and a rollicking (if bumpy) Friday-night ride.

JAWAN is the story of a vigilante. A brutally injured and mysterious man ( Shah Rukh Khan ) is rescued by kind villagers living near the border. A few months later, the militants attack the village. The mysterious man, who has now recovered, saves them all. However, he seems to have lost his memory. 30 years later, the mysterious man hijacks a metro train in Mumbai with the help of his gang of women comprising Laxmi (Priya Mani), Eeram (Sanya Malhotra), Ishkra (Girija Oak), Kalki (Lehar Khan), Helena (Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) and Janvi (Aaliyah Qureishi). The mysterious man asks the government for Rs. 40,000 crores. But he doesn't want the money for himself. Instead, he donates the amount to a certain economically disadvantaged class. Narmada ( Nayanthara ), who has successfully handled such hostage operations in the past, is given charge. Despite her best efforts, the mysterious man escapes and so does his team of women. Kalee Gaikwad (Vijay Sethupathi), one of the biggest arms dealers in the world, gets involved in this mess as the government takes money from him to give it to the mysterious man as per the latter’s request. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Atlee's story is not just entertaining but also makes an important comment on our political system. Atlee and S Ramanagirivasan's screenplay is riveting. There's so much exciting happening in the film every moment that one doesn't get time to think. However, logic takes a backseat in certain portions. Sumit Arora's dialogues are powerful. Several one-liners will induce claps and whistles in theatres.

Atlee's direction is terrific. He keeps the narrative very simple and hence, it'll be easy to understand. The narrative is a bit South style as the film touches upon social issues and at the same time, doesn’t compromise on entertainment quotient. Yet, JAWAN is very much a Bollywood film. The balance has been achieved wonderfully by Atlee. There’s a lot of flashbacks and back and forth in the narrative. It adds to the intrigue value as one is constantly curious to know the back story.

On the flipside, the second half is comparatively weaker. Several moments give you a been-there-done-that feeling. The cinematic liberties are too many. Also, Atlee introduced several characters and plot points but they were forgotten after a point.

JAWAN begins with a bang. Shah Rukh Khan’s entry will create a frenzy in cinemas. Before you can process the sequence, the story jumps to the metro hijack episode. It is not just badass but also very moving, especially the flashback scene. The scenes of Suji (Seeza Saroj Mehta) are cute. The film then again goes on a high with the hospital sequence. The intermission point is another scene where the masses will go crazy. The second half also has its share of exciting scenes but pales in comparison to the out-of-the-world first half. Two scenes that stand out are the ones of the prisoner giving birth in jail and Kalee’s enquiry. The climax, however, is when the film yet again scores a sixer.

Shah Rukh Khan rocks and also shocks as in the last 31 years, viewers have never seen him in such avatars. All his looks are entertaining and add a lot to the mass quotient of the film. Vijay Sethupathi is okay initially but shines in the second half. Nayanthara looks stunning and delivers a first-rate performance. The chemistry between her and Shah Rukh Khan, however, is not as electrifying as intended as the director didn’t devote time to developing their love story. From the girl squad, Priya Mani, Sanya Malhotra and Lehar Khan leave a huge mark. Girija Oak and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya also do well. Seeza Saroj Mehta is adorable. Sunil Grover (Irani), Eijaz Jhan (Manish), Ridhi Dogra (Kaveri) and Ashlesha (Alia; Kalee's daughter) don't get much scope. Omkar Das Manikpuri (Kalki's father) is quite good. Naresh Gosain (Agriculture minister), Ashwin Kaushal (Health Minister) and Mukesh Chhabra (Pappu; Health Minister's PA) are aptly cast. Deepika Padukone (Aishwarya Rathore) is there for nearly 20 minutes and is too good. Sanjay Dutt (Madhavan Naik) is crowd-pleasing.

Anirudh's music comes across as one of the weak points of the film however the songs are lavishly picturised. The title song is like the theme of the film and is the best of the lot.  'Not Ramaiya Vastavaiya'  and  'Zinda Banda'  work due to the placement. The same goes for  'Aararaari Raaro'. 'Chaleya'  and  'Faraatta'  are decent. Anirudh's background score enhances the mass appeal.

G K Vishnu's cinematography is very rich. T Muthuraj's production design is superior. Anirudh and Dipika Lal's costumes stand out. Preetisheel Singh D'souza's make-up and prosthetics deserve a special mention. Spiro Razatos, Anl Arasu, Craig Macrae, Yannick Ben, Kecha Khamphakdee and Sunil Rodrigues' action is visually appealing and not too gory. Redchillies.vfx's VFX matches global standards. Ruben's editing is razor-sharp.

On the whole, JAWAN is a mass entertainer at its best with superlative performances, thrilling and clap worthy moments, larger-than-life action sequences, and a never-before-seen avatar of Shah Rukh Khan. At the box office, it will emerge as a blockbuster of epic proportions, setting new records and rewriting existing ones.

Jawan Review: Strikingly Meta Vehicle Taps The Magnetism Of Shah Rukh Khan

A young South Indian director with a 100 per cent success rate - every one of his four previous films has been a humongous hit - and a Bollywood superstar with an enduring fan following like nobody else's combine to unleash a Hindi mass movie that is as good as any we have seen in recent times.

Jawan , which also has Tamil and Telugu versions released nationwide, brings together the best of two worlds in a manner that borders on the delightfully frenzied and consistently captivating. Shah Rukh Khan, coming off the box-office record-smashing Pathaan, makes the most of a screenplay that has things to say and the wherewithal to making its pertinent points without losing its focus on the primary purpose of providing unalloyed entertainment.

Packed with all the ingredients that you would expect in a high-octane action film, Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed. To that extent, it is somewhat like the 2017 Vijay starrer, Mersal, Atlee's third directorial venture.

In his first Hindi film, Atlee, who has written Jawan with his Theri and Mersal collaborator S. Ramana Girivasan, taps the magnetism of Shahrukh Khan and the spirit of the hot-button themes of the times in a superbly crafted potboiler that mixes big explosive action sequences with intimate emotional scenes.

Jawan tells the affecting story of a soldier without resorting to jingoistic bluster. If anything, the film does the exact opposite. It speaks up on behalf of the masses and touches upon issues that matter to people at the mercy of the politically and economically powerful.

Without naming names or specifying real-life parallels, Jawan weighs in on crony capitalism, bad loans, farmer suicides, neglected government hospitals, malfunctioning military weapons, election fraud and the plight of a citizenry stripped of access to resources that are rightfully theirs.

Jawan turns the spotlight on apathetic ministers, falsehood-peddling politicians and incompetent and compromised bureaucrats, none of whom are willing to be held accountable for a rotting system. The film delivers its message with great flair but without succumbing to gratuitous grandstanding.

Who is better equipped to do all this than SRK, who, even when he plays a larger-than-life action hero on a mission to take down a powerful industrialist who has wronged him and his nation in more ways than one, can stay rooted in the real world and animate the canvas with humanity even as he projects an invincible, superhero-like persona?

Jawan , produced by Gauri Khan under the Red Chillies Entertainment banner, erases the line that separates the actor playing a fictional figure and the star engaged in a conversation with his audience. The latter is inevitably one-way but as one watches the film in a packed hall its resonance with significant swathes of the audience is palpable.

SRK carries off the onerous task with such phenomenal panache that one barely notices when one entity gives way to the other. The narrative is never in danger of losing its balance even as the performer and the character shorten the distance between them.

On one level, Jawan  is a fan service masala film. On another, it is a tale of revenge that is also a political statement, and a loud and clear one at that. Jawan ends with the hero looking straight into the camera - it is positioned in a way that represents the eye of the audience - and tangentially echoing what SRK's character had said more than once in the action-comedy from a decade ago, Chennai Express ("Don't underestimate the power of a common man").

Ask questions, seek answers and use the power of your vote wisely, he exhorts the audience with all the solemnity that he can muster following an act of daring that compels the head of state to accept his demand to intervene.

Jawan opens in a hilly village on India's border - the exact location isn't specified - where a badly wounded soldier is nursed back to physical health. A few months later, he springs to the defence of the hamlet when it is attacked by a band of murderous infiltrators. He repels the aggressors but the brave warrior does not remember who is. A little boy who he saves from certain death promises to find out when he is old enough.

The film cuts to three decades later. A Mumbai Metro train with more than 300 passengers is hijacked by a group of six women (played, among others by Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra and Sanjeeta Bhattacharya) and an ageing man (Shahrukh Khan) in the guise of an Army Captain. He demands that he will negotiate only with one particular police officer, Narmada Rai (Nayanthara, who hits all the right notes).

The parleys over the next few minutes brings an unlettered agriculture minister and a wealthy businessman, Kali Gaekwad (Vijay Sethupathi), into the picture. At one end of the spectrum, we hear the story of a farmer (Omkar Das Manikpuri) forced to kill himself because he has defaulted on a Rs 40,000 loan for a tractor. At the other end is the case of a bank waiving off an industrialist's Rs 40,000 crore loan.

The captain's first encounter with the law gives way to scenes in a woman's prison where he reappears as a jail warden, Azad, a man who has revolutionised life for the inmates with boldly progressive initiatives. The jailer, with the help of six women who have suffered at the hands of those who wield power, is determined to change how the prison - and the nation - functions.

The first half of the 170-minute film is fast-paced and replete with stylishly executed fight sequences and a track that witnesses Azad and Narmada, a single mother, entering into wedlock. Post-intermission, Jawan recounts the story of Azad's birth, the fate of his mother (Deepika Padukone in a memorable special appearance) and his relationship with the former women's prison jailer Kaveri (Riddhi Dogra).

The flashbacks out of the way, the film returns to the thick of the action around the villainous tycoon whose misdeeds extend to trying to influence the electoral process with money power. The hero and his supporters fan out to stop the baddie and his accomplices in their tracks.

In the chase sequences in the run-up to a rousing climax, director Atlee and his team pull out the stops and come up eye-popping action passages. In the final act, SRK and Vijay Sethupathi (who is as brilliant as ever) square off in a scene that caps a magnificent crowd-pleaser that blends some sharp writing (the Hindi dialogues by Sumit Arora are almost always on the ball) and a high level of technical finesse.

Jawan hits the bull's eye both as a movie that is out to entertain and a vehicle that demonstrates the power of a superstar endowed with a voice that is anything but ordinary. It manifests itself as much on the screen as it does outside its fictive confines.

Massy, massy massy! The chants in Atlee’s background score on Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release Jawan are a reminder of what this first time actor - director duo have set out to do. Massy because Jawan has Atlee’s signature stamp all over it - larger-than-life action pieces, loud and over-the-top background score, gut-wrenching emotional drama and songs with 100 background dancers. But this time around he’s charting unfamiliar territory working with a superstar who embodies the emotion of ‘massy’ like no one else. But apart from being massy, the film is also messy. So does Atlee and SRK’s combination deliver or crumble under the huge pressure? Let’s find out.

Jawan is a message driven film . The story of an army officer who has been wronged and his son who later picks up the pieces of what his father set out to do is super-high on emotional drama and theatrics. Shah Rukh’s double role as the father and son was a smooth move and that is perhaps Atlee’s only ace of spade in a screenplay that is deeply interspersed with potholes and flaws. A special shout-out to Nayanthara, who acts as the perfect support to SRK in the film. But Shah Rukh’s army of girls and their mission to become Robin Hood for the downtrodden and needy is not new as a concept - Money Heist did it recently and Kamal Haasan’s Indian has done it in the past.

But where Jawan stands out from the others is in its treatment and execution. Shah Rukh moulds himself to become the medium for Atlee’s blockbuster screen vision and the camera plays with the actor like a muse with his mentor every time he walks into a frame. The supporting cast in Jawan don’t have much to do, they are there to give the film its size and grandeur because the centre piece of the film is the poster boy - SRK. Vijay Sethupathi as the bad guy is terrific , his scene where he plays Santa with the ho-ho-ho chuckle is menacing and funny at the same time.

Jawan also has Deepika Padukone in an extended cameo and watching her with SRK is pure joy, but her character needed to have more meat. Even the girl brigade doesn’t get much screen presence and Sunil Grover is an odd misfit in the sketchy narrative that flip flops as and when it wants. The film gets preachy and drags a lot in the first half. There are long dialogues on making the world a better place to live, the stand out scene being SRK’s monologue in exercising your right to vote (the timing is unmissable).

Jawan is a big screen spectacle . It is flawed but at a time where everything is over-analysed, it makes for a good time at the cinemas. Ready or not, this is a ride that’s definitely worth taking. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan Movie Review and Release Live Updates: The wait is finally over. Shah Rukh Khan’s actioner Jawan is doing a blockbuster business in theatres amid largely positive reviews. Directed by Atlee, the film also features Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Yogi Babu, Sunil Grover, Simarjeet Singh Nagra, Azzy Bagria, and Manahar Kumar, among others. Deepika Padukone has an extended cameo in the movie.

With Jawan’s trailer, SRK promised to offer an action-packed drama to cinephiles and he has delivered with the film. Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express wrote in her Jawan review, “Combining the in-your-face maximalism of director Atlee, and the come-get-me grizzled slit-eyed sexiness of star Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan is a pop-masala banger.”

The excitement around Jawan’s release is much evident at the box office. Early estimates say Jawan box office collection on day 1 will easily surpass Pathaan’s, making it the biggest opening day earner of Hindi cinema.

As per trade analyst Girish Johar, the 30-odd single-screen cinemas in the Hindi belt, which were shut down in the pandemic, have opened just after looking at the craze around Jawan.

While Jawan stars Shah Rukh, it is not a typical Bollywood film. The movie is infused with the quintessential South Indian masala with Atlee’s direction, Nayanthara as the leading lady and Vijay Sethupathi playing the menacing villain. The action-packed spectacle has a truly national appeal with popular stars from the South, including Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, along with an eclectic ensemble of stars, which is making the movie cater to a larger market with its Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. With the movie also being screened in special formats like IMAX, 4DX and ICE, audiences are enjoying the larger-than-life story telling in a more experiential manner.

He added, "The film has released at a time when the industry is seeing its glorious days with consumers going out to cinemas in huge numbers. The makers of Atlee’s Jawan held a special screening of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, on Thursday evening. The screening turned into a star-studded affair as the film’s star-cast Nayanthara and Deepika Padukone and Sanya Malhotra attended the event along with casting director Mukesh Chhabra. Deepika Padukone has an extended cameo in Jawan and the actor has been responding to the praise she is getting for starring with her first hero, Shah Rukh Khan. Deepika Padukone was spotted at Yash Raj Films last night as she joined the Jawan team.

Nayanthara and her director husband Vignesh Shivan were also seen at Mumbai's screening night.

Last night, Jawan director Atlee was seen at Gaiety Galaxy Cinema in Mumbai. He came to see the film with fans.

A report by Box Office India claims that Jawan has already earned Rs 60 crore nett on day 1 in Hindi, and the film's collection finished off the day with Rs 65 crore mark.

The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review, "Combining the in-your-face maximalism of director Atlee, and the come-get-me grizzled slit-eyed sexiness of star Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan is a pop-masala banger: iss kahani mein action hai, emotion hai, hero hai, villain hai, aur naach-gaana hai, aur kya chahiye? Actually, there is more: fashioned as an unabashed massy entertainer, Jawan slips in strong political messaging at every opportunity, making it a film which is very much of the moment." Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan has been welcomed with open arms in Kerala, with evening and night shows going houseful. Trade analyst AB George tweeted, "EXCELLENT OPENING for #Jawan in #Kerala.Night and evening shows showing RECORD OCCUPANCY and show count for a BOLLYWOOD FILM...King Size screens like @kavitha_theatre, Savitha, EVM, Ragam, @ariesplex, Abhilash etc reporting excellent occupancy KING KHAN FLEXING HIS MUSCLES in SOUTH too."

Film trade analyst Atul Mohan wrote on Twitter, "#Atlee's masterful direction unveils #ShahRukhKhan like never before in #Jawan. A cinematic masterclass on showcasing a star! The jaw-dropping #SRK intro and interval block is pure surprise magic that'll linger in memory. This film is the epitome of style, sleekness and technical brilliance!"

Telugu actor Nikhil Siddhartha took to Twitter to share how he has always been a Shah Rukh fan. He wrote, "Wishing My Favourite Star from when I was a Kid @iamsrk a MASSIVE BLOCKBUSTER with #Jawaan. Filmmaker Kunal Kohli took to Twitter to praise Shah Rukh Khan's performance in Jawan. He tweeted, "#Jawan is a super fun film with a great message. @iamsrk has outdone himself. Which is a huge task in itself."

Vijay Dhar, owner of the the valley's lone multiplex, told PTI, "The Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) had mentioned it (the response) in the Parliament when Pathaan released here. The initial response (for Jawan) has been very good. It is houseful for four days (till Sunday). Then it depends upon the movie and how much the people like it.”

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan's production house Red Chillies Entertainment posted a video of fans across the country celebrating the release of Jawan.

Dir @Atlee_dir has fully  used  @iamsrk’s image to the hilt in a dual role oozing charisma, style with some elevating action blocks. Atlee’s script has mixed the commercial cocktail perfectly. The BGM & music of  @anirudhofficial raises the bar. #Nayanthara has a terrific role and has done a neat job. @VijaySethuOffl as antagonist with a sense of humour fits the bill. Jawan actor Sangay Tsheltrim shared a click with King Khan from last night's screening of the film.

A few reports claim that Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan has fallen prey to piracy within hours of its release and it is available on various online platforms.

Ahead of Jawan's release, Shah Rukh conducted an 'AskSRK' session where he expressed gratitude towards his fans for showering love on him and buying tickets of Jawan. He also hoped the Hindi audience to accept and love Nayanthara, a big name in the south Indian film industry, and shower love on her as well.

Jawan FIRST Review Out: The early review of Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, is finally out, and it’s extremely positive. Casting director Mukesh Chhabra, who attended the screening of Jawan last night, is raving about the “massy” movie, directed by Atlee. Jawan also features a special cameo appearance by Deepika Padukone, who co-starred with SRK with Pathaan.

Sharing the review on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mukesh wrote: “Jawan was an emotional roller coaster. Thank you for making me a part of this film @iamsrk and @Atlee_dir and @_GauravVerma. Even if I wasn’t a part of this film, it moved me and gave me goosebumps. One of the best Bollywood and Pan india films I have seen. Massy with a message.”

Jawan has already created a history at the box office as the film has sold more than one million tickets in India. If advance sales are anything to go by, Jawan has earned over Rs 37 crores gross globally. Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu sent his best wishes to SRK for the release of Jawan and said that he’d be watching the movie in a theatre with his family. Jawan is likely to feature special cameos by South superstars Thalapathy Vijay and Allu Arjun of Pushpa fame.

Jawan is a Red Chillies Entertainment presentation directed by Atlee, produced by Gauri Khan, and co-produced by Gaurav Verma. The film releases worldwide today in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages.

Jawan First Review: Shah Rukh Khan Stands Out In This Physically Challenge Film, Packed With ‘Maniac Energy'

Jawan First Review: After taking the global box office by storm with Pathaan, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is all set to make his fans go crazy once again with his next movie, Jawan.

The action-packed thriller movie is directed by Tamil filmmaker Atlee and marks superstar Nayanthara's debut in the Hindi film industry. Soon after the trailer was released and showcased on Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the hype around the film has amped up.

As fans are already going nuts since its advance booking was opened on September 1, the first review of the action thriller is out, and it has only good things to say about it.

As the film's team is gearing up for Jawan's release, which is due in three days, Pakistani-origin Umair Sandhu, who calls himself a critic and a member of the Overseas Censor Board, shared his review of Jawan and stated that the actioner is loaded with manic energy and high spirit.

Praising the movie, Umair gave Jawan 5 stars and wrote, "First Review #Jawan is a perfect vehicle that does justice to the talent of #ShahRukhKhan. He seems to have found a story & character that work in perfect sync and tandem with manic energy.#SRK steers this physically challenging lead role with high-spirited self-belief."

JAWAN ADVANCE BOOKING

Filmibeat cannot verify how he has managed to watch the film days ahead of its release or guarantee how authentic the review is. Meanwhile, there is no press being organised for Jawan and journalists and reviewers in India at present.

Jawan advance bookings are now in full swing and is said to beat Pathaan's all-time record for advance bookings. According to its first-day advance booking numbers by trade website Sacnilk.com, the actioner is expected to create new all-time records for Hindi movies and has sold over 7 tickets in India for its opening day alone.

Trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan took to X and gave the latest figure, saying, "BREAKING: Jawan Day 1 advance sales. SOLD 7 lakh tickets. CROSSES ₹20 crore gross mark across all theatres in India. National Multiplexes alone sells 3 lakh plus tickets for the opening day... 2 days to Jawan..."

WHAT KRK SAID ABOUT JAWAN?

KRK shared a post on social media, revealing that his Bollywood friend called Jawan a 'masterpiece'. JAWAN TO SET BOX OFFICE RECORDS

Trade experts believe that the film will set the box office on fire and create new records. Amid competition from Sunny Deol starrer Gadar 2, the movie is expected to start on a solid note, garnering over Rs 50 crore in India.

Let us tell you that Jawan has been given a U/A by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with seven cuts. The actioner has been approved for a run time of 169 minutes (2 hours, 49 minutes). On the other hand, it will be released in over 5,000 screens, which is massive.

Shah Rukh Khan and his Jawan team are making sure to promote the film in the right way. Days after seeking blessings at Viashno Devi Shrine, he, along with his daughter Suhana, co-star Nayanthara, and her filmmaker husband Vignesh Shivan, visited the famous Tirupati temple to offer prayers. Several viral videos show SRK wearing a white kurta pyjama with a traditional white and golden cloth around her shoulder, while Suhana and Nayanthara are seen in white salwar suits.

Meanwhile, it is facing backlash in neighbouring nation Bangladesh. The country's government has reached a compromise and allowed a cap of 10 Hindi movies to be released in the country, and Jawan is the third film to be released after Pathaan and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Local artists are concerned about the impact of foreign films on the local film business.

Jawan has sold 11 lakh tickets in all languages for day 1, surpassing advance bookings of Pathaan and Adipurush, which were 10 lakh. Jawan's advance booking collection has grossed 30 crore for opening day.

The executive director of Gaiety, Galaxy and Maratha Mandir Cinema, Manoj Desai told told PTI: "By Thursday, it will be houseful. We are happy with the golden run of movies in theatres, especially in single-screen theatres. I think because of Pathaan and Gadar 2, the business in single screen has revived. The industry has bounced back in a big way. With 'Jawan things are looking positive.'

Fans celebrate Jawan's relase

Fans have flocked cinema halls for the early screenings, and videos from the theatres say that Jawan has all the elements of a mind-blowing massy film. Shah Rukh Kahn fans can be seen dancing and hooting to the song Zinda Banda.

SRK fans also celebrated 'Jawan' release by cutting a cake outside the star's house, Mannat. The cake had 'Jawan FDFS' written on it.

Helmed by Atlee, the movie also stars Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Yogi Babu, Sunil Grover, and others.

It is set to release in theatres on September 7.

Jawan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan’s film with Atlee rides high on ACTION, EMOTION and plenty of MASS moments

There’s a different kind of excitement in the air while watching the first day first show of a tentpole quintessential Hindi Film. After delivering a historic success with Pathaan , Shah Rukh Khan is back again with another commercial entertainer, the Atlee directed Jawan. With this action-packed saga, the team has promised a big screen experience like never before. Does Jawan live onto all the hype? Let’s find out!

What works for Jawan?

It’s difficult to explain the plot of Jawan in one paragraph as writer and director, Atlee, has packaged the film with so many sub-plots that eventually lead to the finale. Jawan is among those rare well written commercial films of Hindi Cinema, where the mass and elevation moments are stitched to perfection in a well written, tight screenplay. The narrative of Jawan keeps you hooked from the word go and makes you wonder what will happen next.

Director Atlee knows how to build on the emotions and make the audience root for the journey of the leading hero. There is so much happening all through the narrative, that despite the runtime of 2 hours and 38 minutes, the audience is hooked from start to finish. The action blocks happen for a purpose and are backed by strong emotions. The writing is such that the filmmaker has beautifully married the plot with a high point, every few minutes.

Atlee presents Shah Rukh Khan like a demi-god and SRK aces the mass avatar to perfection. The character evolution and elevation of Shah Rukh Khan is something that every hero of Indian Cinema would dream for and that’s the biggest WIN for Atlee. Right from the introduction scene, to the hijack episode, the pre-interval block, the post interval flash back, the robbery episode; in the second half and prolonged climax – Jawan is loaded with whistle-worthy moments. While the story and emotions engage you into the world in the first half, the second half has two of the best mass moments of the film, one of which is the robbery sequence, which makes up for some flaws in the latter half.

Jawan is a lot more than what one can expect – and it’s a rather brave film too as SRK makes strong anti-establishment statements too through the film. The back-stories of all the female cast in SRK’s team – Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Leher Khan and Girja Oak among others – is well integrated to amp up the emotional quotient. The scale of Jawan is unlike what one has seen in a film set in India. Every frame has grandeur written over it. The background score by Anirudh enhances the cinema watching experience – he elevates the mass moments and takes them to a different level. The score used for Vikram Rathore just adds on to the aura of the character. It’s a vigilante film done right.

What doesn’t work for Jawan?

Jawan warranted better music as a tentpole entertainer doesn’t really have that one quintessential chartbuster. While Challeya is the best of the lot, a bigger dance number than Zinda Banda with SRK, would have made the film tick mark the box of that one dance number that stands the test of time. Though the film has some strong dialogues in the second half, Sumit Arora could have packed a bigger punch with regards to one-liners.

The makers could have easily chopped the Farrata song in the second half, thereby bringing the run-time down by about 5 minutes. The romantic track of SRK with Nayanthara isn’t convincing as their relationship escalates quickly. The comic undertones towards the end of the climax could have been avoided as the intensity was at its peak in the sequences preceding those in the finale.

While Vijay Sethupathi rises above what’s written on the paper, his character could have been written better, with a stronger conclusion.

Performances of actors in Jawan

Jawan is an out and out Shah Rukh Khan show.  Right from the first frame till the last, SRK delivers a performance that would be remembered for a long time. From the display of his heroism and machoism to the emotional sequences, action blocks and the hard-hitting dramatic monologues – He does everything that one expects of a Hindi Film Hero. While a major part of the narrative rides on SRK as Azad, it’s the father, Vikram Rathore, who is a complete show-stealer. Every sequence featuring SRK as Vikram Rathore would be greeted with seetis and taalis from the audience. Nayanthara makes a smashing debut in Hindi. As Narmada, she gets her moments to shine, especially in the first half. She makes all those action sequences look believable and looks convincing in a role that requires her to share a unique dynamic with the leading hero. Vijay Sethupathi as Kaali is a perfect casting of a quintessential antagonist in a feature film. While his character is decently written on the paper, he takes it to another level on screen with the wicked smile and dialogue delivery. Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Riddhi Dogra, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Girija Oak, Lehar Khan, Aaliyan Qureshi, Eijaz Khan and Sunil Grover do well in their respective parts. Deepika Padukone is impactful in her cameo avatar, and makes her presence felt despite limited screen time. Sanjay Dutt’s appearance at an unexpected juncture is sure to evoke whistles from the masses.

Final Verdict of Jawan

Jawan packs a solid punch with action, drama, emotion and scale packaged to perfection in the screenplay by Atlee. It’s driven by Shah Rukh Khan like never before in a once-in-a-lifetime kind of heroic characters of Azad and Vikram Rathore. The action blocks are backed by emotions combined with a strong story. With plenty of mass moments, Jawan is PEAK COMMERCIAL ENTERTAINER and is headed to be a HISTORIC BLOCKBUSTER. Its vigilante done right, with Shah Rukh Khan’s touch in commercial palate of filmmaking.

Jawan Film: Overview

Jawan is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film written and directed by Atlee, in his first Hindi film. It stars Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone (billed as a special appearance), Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Principal photography commenced in September 2021 with filming taking place in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad. Jawan was initially planned to release on 2 June 2023, but was postponed due to post-production needing more work. It is now scheduled for theatrical release on 7 September 2023, coinciding with Janmashtami.

In late 2019, it was rumored that Shah Rukh Khan would team up with Tamil film director Atlee and the project was confirmed in 2020. In May 2021, it was reported that the filming would commence soon.

Nayanthara was finalized as the female lead opposite Khan, thus marking her Hindi cinema debut. Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra and Yogi Babu later joined the cast. Babu joined with Khan after a decade, last he acted with Khan in Chennai Express. Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined citing health issues and thus the role went to Vijay Sethupathi. Deepika Padukone joined the cast in August 2022 in Chennai to shoot her cameo. In September 2022, Thalapathy Vijay was confirmed to make a cameo in the film. In March 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast to shoot an action-packed cameo.

Jawan is scheduled for a theatrical release on 7 September 2023 in Hindi along with dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu languages. Earlier the film was scheduled to release on 2 June 2023. Later in May 2023, it was reported that film is delayed to August 2023. The film was later reported to release on the original release date, However, later it was confirmed that the film will release on 7 September 2023. Red Giant Movies acquired Tamil Nadu distribution rights while Dil Raju in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state.

Movie Review:

Social vigilantism is not a new subject in Bollywood. Nor is mixing it with a personal vendetta angle. Corruption in political circles, farmers’ suicides, crumbling health infrastructure; come to think of it, on the surface little that the script explores is groundbreaking. Dig deep, and the good old formula has been rejigged in what is intrinsically an entertainer. What makes Atlee’s ‘Jawan’ different is how it breaks the formula within the formulaic.

Shah Rukh Khan’s king-size charm is eternal, only here he is not just essaying yet another romantic part. Seen in a double role, his swag is very much intact. But what makes his presence refreshing is that you see many new shades of him and he delights in most.

In the opening sequence, he appears in a mummified form somewhere on the border of India. A scintillating action sequence follows; SRK is revealed to us in an equally dazzling fashion. Who exactly is he?

The scene moves to 30 years after and here he is bald with a greying moustache, holding the train and passengers to ransom. Is he the same man? Writer-director Atlee, the phenomenal director of South with an impeccable track record at the box office, keeps us guessing at more than one point. A few more ‘noble’ acts of vigilantism and Vikram Rathore (SRK) becomes a hero. But can the Badshah of romance ever let his female fans down! The romantic angle once again plays up the sensitive and progressive man that he is. Besides, his core team of self-styled crusaders comprises women and women alone. Here, we are introduced to ‘The Family Man’ actress Priyamani (Lakshmi) and then there is Sanya Malhotra (Dr Eeram) and a host of others. Kudos to women power… only, all of them have a limited impact. Nayanthara (Narmada) as the investigating officer looks lovely and makes an impressive entry as the tough negotiator. Besides, her character arc of a single, unwed mother has that contemporary angle. But in the overall scheme of things, she loses to SRK’s towering presence and deserved a more solid Hindi film debut.

Expectedly, in an SRK vehicle, that too with a double role, the other actors won’t get much to do. Talented actor Sunil Grover (Irani) is wasted and the twist around his character is unwarranted. The only exception perhaps is antagonist Vijay Sethupathi (Kaalie Gaikwad). After impressing North Indian cinegoers in web-series ‘Farzi’, he has a meaty role and does reasonable justice to it as he brings controlled menace to villainy. Is there a veiled analogy to his character sketch with climate change as a subtext? We leave it to your imagination.

Amidst drama, tears and action, coupled with political posturing, the film cruises to the interval, fast-paced and brisk. Hereafter, a few more surprises, some delightful, some regular, are in store. A back story involving Deepika Padukone as Aishwarya has all your attention. She dazzles and brings emotional heft in a stirring cameo. Spread over two hours and 50 minutes, the length does rob the film of its delight quotient and when Sethupathi says, ‘Khatam karo yaar, nahi toh yeh phir music chala denge’, it sure is a dig we don’t miss. Music except for ‘Chaleya’ certainly isn’t the highlight of the film. At many levels, ‘Jawan’ is a tribute to Indian cinema, SRK’s charisma and his films of yore and of entertainment around the world.

If the bonhomie and bonding with the all-women team reminds you of ‘Chak De’, their getup inspired by ‘Money Heist’ and the jail, the epicenter of much action, seems to be fashioned after ‘Squid Game’. His direct speech on why we need to question the electoral system before casting our vote is reminiscent of the power of people in ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’. Of course, close to the elections, given the political climate, many can draw inferences. And when we hear the line ‘Bande mein hai dum’, we know the original context and can sense this tipping the hat to Sanjay Dutt. Dutt appears in the final scene and post-credit rushes too and adds to the cheer.

Though the film leaves you with a feeling that it could have been crisper and better edited, SRK’s magic and Atlee’s ingenious direction make this North-South alchemy worth the while.
