Passage: Leisure Time: A Global Perspective

In the mosaic of global cultures, leisure time represents a fascinating array of activities and meanings. Across different societies, leisure is not just a mere pastime but a reflection of deep-seated cultural values, historical evolution, and societal norms. This exploration into the realm of leisure reveals not just how people relax and unwind but also provides insights into their priorities, beliefs, and the impact of technological advancements on their lives.

Historically, leisure activities have been influenced by the geographical, economic, and social contexts of a society. In ancient civilizations, such as Greece and Rome, leisure was predominantly the privilege of the elite, often filled with intellectual pursuits, arts, and sports. These activities were not merely for enjoyment but also for cultivating a well-rounded persona, embodying the values of their culture. In contrast, for the working classes, leisure time was scarce, often limited to religious festivals and communal gatherings.

The industrial revolution marked a significant shift in the concept of leisure. As working hours became more regulated and the concept of the weekend emerged, leisure time became a more widespread phenomenon. This era saw the rise of public leisure facilities like parks, museums, and libraries, democratizing access to leisure and cultural activities.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the landscape of leisure has transformed dramatically, largely due to the advent of digital technology. The internet, social media, and streaming services have introduced a new paradigm of leisure activities. In contemporary societies, leisure time is often synonymous with screen time, whether it's binge-watching a series, scrolling through social media, or engaging in video games.

Despite these technological advances, traditional forms of leisure, such as reading, sports, and arts, continue to thrive. These activities are not only forms of entertainment but also avenues for personal growth and health. Studies have shown that engaging in physical activities and hobbies during leisure time has a profound impact on mental and physical well-being, reducing stress and improving cognitive function.

The global perspective on leisure is incredibly diverse. In countries like Japan, leisure often involves communal activities such as attending festivals or dining out with friends. In contrast, in Scandinavian countries, there is a greater emphasis on outdoor activities and nature, reflecting their cultural affinity for the outdoors. This diversity highlights how leisure activities are shaped by cultural values and environmental contexts.

Leisure time also offers a window into generational shifts. While older generations may prefer more traditional forms of leisure, younger generations are more inclined towards digital and interactive forms of entertainment. This generational divide in leisure preferences is indicative of the broader societal changes and technological evolution.

Moreover, the way individuals choose to spend their leisure time can be a reflection of their personal identity and lifestyle. For some, leisure is an opportunity for self-improvement and learning, indulging in educational courses or fitness regimes. For others, it is about relaxation and escapism, perhaps through travel or consuming media.

The impact of leisure on societal health and productivity cannot be understated. Societies that value and facilitate leisure time for their citizens tend to have higher levels of happiness and productivity. This correlation underscores the importance of a balanced approach to work and leisure, challenging the notion that non-stop work leads to greater success.

In the future, the concept of leisure is likely to continue evolving. Emerging technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence promise to introduce new forms of leisure, further blurring the lines between reality and entertainment. The challenge will be to balance these advances with the human need for physical activity, social interaction, and connection with nature.

In conclusion, leisure time is a multifaceted concept that varies across cultures, generations, and individuals. It is a reflection of cultural values, societal norms, and

technological progress. Understanding these dynamics is crucial not only for personal well-being but also for grasping the broader societal context in which leisure activities occur. The way people around the world allocate and enjoy their leisure time is a rich subject, offering a mirror to the diversity of human experience and the evolving landscape of our global society.

From the tranquil tea ceremonies of Japan to the lively soccer matches in Brazil, the variety of leisure activities is as vast as the human imagination. These activities are not just forms of relaxation but are also imbued with cultural significance and communal values. In Japan, the tea ceremony is not merely about drinking tea but is a ritual that embodies respect, cleanliness, and harmony. Similarly, in Brazil, soccer is more than a game; it's a celebration of community, skill, and national pride.

The role of leisure in personal and societal development is also noteworthy. Engaging in leisure activities can foster creativity, resilience, and adaptability. For instance, engaging in artistic hobbies like painting or music can enhance creative thinking and emotional expression. Similarly, team sports can develop teamwork skills and resilience.

Leisure time also plays a critical role in family and community bonding. Shared leisure activities, whether they are family picnics, community concerts, or sports events, strengthen social bonds and foster a sense of belonging and community spirit. These activities provide a platform for intergenerational communication and cultural exchange, enriching community life.

Despite the universal presence of leisure, access to leisure activities can be influenced by socio-economic factors. In some parts of the world, access to leisure facilities or the luxury of free time is limited, reflecting broader socio-economic inequalities. Understanding and addressing these disparities is essential for ensuring that the benefits of leisure are accessible to all.

Environmental factors also play a role in shaping leisure activities. For instance, in countries with extensive natural landscapes, such as Canada or New Zealand, outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, or kayaking are popular. In urban settings, leisure tends to be more indoor-focused, with a higher emphasis on cultural activities such as theatre, cinema, and dining.

The future of leisure may see a more integrated approach, combining physical, social, and digital experiences. With the rise of smart cities and the Internet of Things, leisure activities could become more personalized and immersive, catering to individual preferences and needs.

In essence, leisure time is a complex and dynamic aspect of human life, intricately linked with cultural, social, economic, and technological factors. It is a vital component of a balanced life, offering opportunities for relaxation, personal growth, and social interaction. As the world continues to evolve, so too will the ways in which we understand and engage in leisure, reflecting the ever-changing tapestry of human life.

Essay on Importance Of Leisure Time Reading Questions and Answers

Ielts reading passage – essay on importance of leisure time.

leisure time essay reading

Essay on Importance Of Leisure Time

In simple words, leisure is the free time of an individual life besides their busy schedule. Generally, the holidays with no piled-up tasks or the not occupied days are the leisure time. Leisure is the form of freedom from domestic chores, professional life or business activities, education, or health complications with a relieved mind and no pending tasks. The time of unpaid duties is also not reflected by leisure as you get occupied by some of the other household chores and even babysitting. Thus, leisure is the untouched time by any physical activity.

Pursuing this further, leisure is not a weekly time in one’s life. The schedule of the current generation has been so occupied that leisure is almost eliminated from their monthly routine. A lot of times, strugglers or established personalities go through severe emotional traumas as they lack self-time in their life. They become so occupied with their tasks and homely chores that they forget about their interest and neglect what they love, focusing on what others want them to get attached to. Thus, the prior importance of leisure time in one’s life is for self-realization. This allows one to think about what they are doing and decide whether they are going on the desired track or not. The frustrated or panicked mind often allows us to do a lot of things that are not planned or desired by ourselves. During this phase, leisure allows us to think about it and work on them well.

In addition to this, the exploration of one’s interest gets a priority during leisure. We often end the passion due to professionals’ economy playing a vital role. The suppressed interest can get into the limelight or the un-successful plans of traveling or exploring get evolved with leisure. The fresh entry back to the work or regular lifestyle is possible only with leisure time in life. After all, leaving the regular bag of office, institution, family, domestic works, and gadgets is important to realize how happy life can be in absence of them and in the presence of a real lovable individual or the environment where one always wanted to be. The allocation should not be made into a routine with hours set but there has to be freedom to be yourself apart from what the situation wants you to be or fit in the role.

In the final analysis, a healthy relationship, a balanced life, a proper reliable profession, and a happy family is possible only with an emotionally and physically stable individual. In this regard, leisure allows you to realize what has been missing in my life and what you need to achieve so far. Leisure is a time taken by an individual to explore themselves and make a to-do list or go through the already made one. Hence, leisure is a key for a happy life and a necessity for a busy schedule because humans cannot live a life of machines and emotional stability requires relieving actions.

The Power of Leisure Reading

Flipster the power of leisure reading blog image

While many people find themselves reading daily for work or school, it can often be difficult to find time strictly for recreational reading. From improving cognitive function to promoting empathy within students, leisure reading has many benefits that might prompt someone to add a little extra reading time into their daily schedule.

Despite some of these benefits, leisure reading has been on the decline for years. The World Economic Forum found that the time an average American spends reading declined from 23 minutes per day in 2004 to just 16 minutes in 2019. Gallup News noted that factors causing this decline could include things like a lack of time for and interest in books or other lifestyle disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In other research , a professor of informatics found that attention spans have continued to shrink over the years which some believe directly correlates to the national decline in reading. Studies over the years have found that the average amount of focus time decreased from two-and-half minutes in 2004 to 75 seconds in 2012. They also noted that more recent studies indicate even further decreases in attention spans.

Although it may be more difficult to remain focused for extended periods of reading time, leisure reading  can be a great way to improve focus, attention span, concentration and memory . In scientific terms, under the right conditions, reading can enlarge neural networks and increase neural connections which can benefit one’s general health and well-being in various ways. Improving focus and attention span can not only be a great way to improve in your professional career, but in your personal life as well.

While some might already be aware of the benefits of leisure reading, incorporating reading into your daily schedule and holding yourself accountable can be challenging in practice. Dr. Kaminskas suggests setting aside time daily and starting small. Beginning with just a few pages everyday can be a helpful way to ease yourself into a new reading habit and slowly begin improving things like concentration. Additionally, he encourages readers to explore a variety of topics and authors to help broaden horizons and learn new perspectives.

For people constantly traveling or trying to find a few minutes between meetings to engage in some leisure reading, digital resources are a great fit. Unlike paperbacks or newspapers which can be difficult to lug around, your tablet is something easy to transport and pull out quickly for a few minutes of downtime.

Digital resources such as EBSCO eBooks and Flipster digital magazines offer top-notch content that libraries can promote alongside the benefits of leisure reading.

Specific Purpose:

To persuade my fellow classmates on the importance of reading during leisure time.

Introduction:

Raise your hand if you have read a book outside of a class requirement within the past year. Did you know that according to the American Time Spent survey of 2017 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans who read for pleasure has declined by over 30% since 2004? In 2004, about 28% of American ages 15 and older read for pleasure; in 2017 that number was down to about 19%. Less men are reading for pleasure than women with a whopping 15% of men reading for fun and about 22% of women. Hello, my name is Samantha Gentry, and today I’m going to persuaded you why reading for pleasure is good for you.

Thesis/Preview:

Reading for pleasure and as a leisure active has many benefits for your mind, body, and soul. Three of the benefits include: improved brain health, relieved stress, and improved empathy skills.

I. Reading is a fantastic activity to help maintain and even improve your brain health.

1. As many of us may be aware, as we begin to get older and age, our physical bodies begin to decline, but so do our brain and mental activity.

2. A study published by Neurology, a peer-reviewed neurology journal, showed that people who read throughout their lifetime had a slower decline in memory compared to their peers who did not.

3. When you are reading, specifically fiction books, your brain is having to make connections; over time these connections for new pathways between the four lobes and two hemispheres in the brain. Over time these new pathways help promote quicker thinking and help defend against cognitive decay.

Transition : Reading is like exercise for your mind. It also serves as a stress reliever.

II. There are many ways to reduce stress. Why is reading one of them you ask?

1. Well according to a study by the University of Sussex in 2009 found that reading for just 6 minutes can reduce stress level by up to 68%.

2. Reading is such a large part of going through school and at many jobs; it is hard to find the benefits of it.

3. When you are immersed in a new world of a fiction novel or learning about one of the greatest leaders in history in a biography book, you are focusing your mind and body to think beyond the stress of your everyday life. Reading also helps reduce your heart rate and eases muscle tension.

Transition: Everyone needs a little stress relief in their life. They also need to learn how to become more empathetic.

III. Being able to show empathy and understand the mental and emotional states of those around is an important skill to forming social relationships.

1. A study by Bal and Veltkemp in 2013, showed that over a week’s time readers who were emotionally transported into a fiction story felt a change in their empathy skills.

2. When you are immersed in an emotional book, you are able to feel what the characters are feeling and think what they are thinking. This helps you to begin to understand how those around you are feeling about situations you may actually never face in your own life.

3. If you are wanting to be a more empathic person, make sure you read fiction books over nonfiction because literary fiction had a more significant impact than nonfiction.

Conclusion: According to Caleb Crain, a writer for The New Yorker, there are many reasons why Americans don’t read; from actives on computers, to cell phone scroll, to the king of them all television watching. However, there are many benefits to reading. These benefits include improved brain health, relieved stress, and improved empathy skills. So please understand that no matter how boring or how much of a waste of time it may seem to you, reading books for fun is good for you. Thank you.

How I Spend My Leisure Time Essay

I admit that I am a very busy person, but I still believe in finding time to unwind and do enjoyable things. I intentionally block off time for leisure in my calendar. I also make it a point to aside resources and plan meticulously to ensure I get maximum relaxation from it.

Leisure is important to mental and physical wellness and should be taken seriously. It is a conscious decision I make to ensure that I am able to experience it regularly. Taking time out renews my vigor to tackle the challenging tasks I come across daily, as I am able to take breaks to reflect on a few issues about life. I mostly plan my leisure time on the weekends so that I can make space for my family and friends.

This is a short description of how I spend my leisure breaks.

How I Make My Free Time Count

My favorite way to spend my leisure time would be to hang out with my friends at the beach. I enjoy the cool breeze from the ocean and watching people have fun on the shore. Walking along the shores of the beach calms my inner chaos. Occasionally, I collect seashells on the beach and bring them to my siblings. Most of these outdoor activities highly depend on how favorable the weather is.

Full body of anonymous barefoot female with flying hair standing on sandy coast near waving sea against colorful rainbow in nature

I also make the effort to make calls to friends I am unable to physically visit and check in on. Sometimes, the walks alone can take up my whole afternoon.

Other times, I like listening to the music albums of my favorite artists as I stroll along the beach. When the weather is hot, I like swimming on the beach or joining my friends to go fishing in deeper waters. Recently, I tried scuba diving and I liked the experience. I hope that I get to try it again soon. The breathtaking view of the reef is amazing.

Sometimes, the weather confines me indoors, but that does not mean I cannot have a good leisure break.

If I am having my leisure getaway indoors, I like trying out new recipes and different cuisines from all over the world. Being busy in the kitchen trying out new dishes is enjoyable, to say the least. The meals don’t always turn out the way I expect them to, but the experience is always fun for me.

Alternatively, I like reading non-fiction books, particularly those that talk about historical events, while relaxing on the couch. I like doing this with soft jazz playing in the background as I peruse through the pages.

At times, I also go to the cinemas and theaters and catch up on the latest movies and plays with friends. There are times when I just want to stay at home and catch up on my go-to shows. I like playing dance games competitively with my brother especially when he is in town. Although he is a better dancer than I am, we both enjoy the dance and have fun together.

I also travel to Africa annually and go on safaris or hike in the mountains. The experience is always great – from socializing with people of different cultures to watching animal wildlife in their natural habitat. The days I spend in Africa leave indelible memories in my mind and encourage me to save up to return and experience more.

The activities I mentioned are just the tip of the iceberg. I really like making the most out of my leisure breaks. All these experiences and memories push me to invest in rest.

I don’t know how you make use of your spare time, but I hope that you are using it well. It could simply be a matter of engaging in your hobbies, spending time with loved ones, soaking in nature, or even reading books. As long as it makes you feel happy and recharged by the time the next week rolls in, it is worth doing.

Different people have different kinds of preferences when it comes to maximizing their free time. There are so many activities to choose from – so there’s no excuse not to indulge in getaways for yourself.

Essay About A Leisure Time Activity

What do you do when you have so much free time that you can actually take extended time off?

I have had the blessing of enjoying a lot of free moments lately and it has given me the opportunity to get involved in the many things that give me joy. One of them is reading novels. I am a staunch fan of murder mysteries. I can never get enough breathers to go through them during a busy week at school, so my collection has been gathering dust at home. I have recently been able to finish two books each weekend, and I’m really enjoying it.

Another activity that I love doing is to write down my plans for the future. I don’t just mean plans for the next year. I like envisioning myself five or ten years from where I am and dreaming of what I’ll be able to accomplish by then.

Finally, I like playing games and indulging in recreational activities. Board games are a guilty pleasure for me. I recently rediscovered my love for classic Monopoly and word puzzles and have been challenging my family and friends for intense rematches on weekends.

What Are Popular Ways To Spend Leisure Time?

There are plenty of ways to wind down in your spare moments. There are those who get involved in competitive sports. Others want something more relaxing and simply hang out with family. More adventurous people travel to other parts of the world to experience and soak in another culture. Others write down their ideas. There are a rare few who spend days in the library looking to expand their knowledge on a certain topic or subject of interest. Then there are the more fun, casual, and popular group activities, such as karaoke, cocktails, hotel stays, and pampering trips.

Why Is Leisure Time Important?

Making space to relax and the wind is essential in making sure you can still excel in the other areas of your life. People say that rest is actually a life strategy. You don’t necessarily rest because you are lazy and don’t want to deal with your obligations. You get to rest for the ultimate good of those activities. It almost seems counterproductive, for example, to do a catnap the night before a heavy deadline. But ten minutes of sleep can actually re-energize your brain and refuel your creative juices so that you can power through the night and finish that requirement. Getting those breathers for yourself also protects you from burnout, which is a common ailment in today’s busy world where everything demands your time and attention. It gives you fresh starts, especially when you feel uninspired and stuck.

Leisure Time: The Types of Activities Essay

Introduction, leisure time freedom, discipline during leisure time, extreme leisure activities.

Leisure time refers to the time in one’s life when one is free from the demands of his/her duties or studies. During this time, one is free to spend his/her time as he wills or as he deems right. Many people opt to spend this time having fun in different ways as a way of relieving the physical and mental stress accumulated during working hours. To some, this is an opportunity to visit friends and family. Whatever activity one chooses depends on one’s interest and the idea of having fun (Bull, et al., 2003).

Leisure time may however be confused for freedom to do anything during one’s free time. There are limits to which one can exercise during his free time. For instance, when one’s way of spending leisure interferes with someone else’s freedom, then there is definitely a limit.

The freedom that people have during their leisure time may be controlled in some cases depending on the level of engagement. Although leisure time refers to free time that one can spend in whatever way he/she wills, some form of control usually exists. For instance, teenagers’ leisure time has some form of control that comes in different ways. There are reasons why some people tend to have an inclination towards extreme sports. This paper covers these issues in detail and gives examples in relevant sections.

Freedom during leisure time refers to the ability to undertake any event for whatever length of time without any form of restrictions. This form of leisure time does not usually exist since there is always some form of control during leisure time. Though leisure time looks like a time when one can do what he/she wills for whatever length of time, this does not in practice exist. Some form of control usually exists for different individuals depending on age, cultural inclination, and length of time available (Harris, 2005).

Teenagers’ leisure times are always controlled lest they engage in destructive activities. Rules are set by parents in the type of activities they may engage and those that they may not engage in lest they get grounded. Teenagers are controlled from engaging in activities such as some very extreme sports, joining peer groups that are destructive and engaging in drugs and alcoholism. Parents on the other hand are limited by other activities which curtail the length of time they engage in leisure activities. For example, it is not possible for a couple to go fishing the whole day leaving their young children unattended.

There is always a compulsion to get back home and take care of the kids among other chores. Leisure time may be one’s free time but it is always controlled by other activities in terms of extent and time that it may continue (Bull, et al., 2003).

It is very important to have some form of control during leisure time. This applies to both the young and the old since discipline makes leisure time more enjoyable in the long run. Discipline ensures consistency during leisure activities while helping an individual maintain a healthy physique. Lack of discipline or some form of control can only lead to destructive engagement which may not be productive in the long run. Parents use some form of restrictive discipline on their children by setting limits that the children may extend as they enjoy their leisure time. On the other hand, parents exercise discipline and control during their free time to ensure that they set a good example for their children.

Discipline helps in controlling freedom as earlier discussed. Without discipline, people would tend to misuse the freedom they have during their free time. For example, lack of discipline when engaging in some extreme sports such as skateboarding may be very lethal and it is important for one to learn the rules of engaging in such sports (Harris, 2005).

Extreme sports are considered to be more lethal compared to other forms of spending leisure. There are many extreme sports today and it is advisable for one to be very careful when engaging in any of them. Enough practice is very necessary before engaging in any extreme sport. Usually, extreme sports that some people engage in, involve the public exhibitions of dangerous stunts as a way of spending leisure. For instance, skateboarding and mountain biking are two extreme sports that people engage in to get thrilled and for excitement.

People engage in extreme sports for different reasons during leisure time. The biggest contributor towards engaging in this type of extreme sports especially among teenagers is the influence of television and video games. Teenagers would always wish to practice what they watch. Others engage in this type of sport simply because they believe that it is the best way of relieving stress. When a person engages in extreme sports, more adrenaline is released which presents one of the best ways of getting rid of stress (Tamara, 2010). People, therefore, tend to engage in some extreme sports which they believe are more relaxing than ordinary leisure activities such as reading or watching.

Leisure time is very important to any individual. This is a time when a person is able to relieve him/herself of day stress accumulated during work or studies. People are always allowed to spend their leisure time in whatever way they want so long as they do not break the set ground rules which in a way curtail the freedom that some people may want to enjoy. It is important to have some form of control or discipline during leisure time. This applies especially when engaging in extreme sports which some people engage in for excitement and thrill.

Essay#22 | Leisure Time for Activities

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task..

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model answer.

It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday life. Personally, I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.

Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don’t want to do a five-kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuits is where we work. People who work indoors often prefer outdoor hobbies, whereas, for people who work outdoors, the reverse may be true. I am a student myself and this involves a lot of sitting in lectures, so I need to get out into the fresh air afterward.

In any situation, the important thing is that people need to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. The only wrong way to spend free time, in my view, is to have a sedentary job and then go home and watch television.

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educational, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience.

To derive a double benefit from anything is considered a bonus, and this is especially the case when discussing leisure activities for children. The idea to fuse both education and entertainment into one activity is a goal of many educators; some would even believe that failure to do this makes the activity pointless. Drawing from examples in Sweden and reviewing games, such as Pokemon, I firmly believe that all activities should have an educational value.

Leisure activities are a perfect time to take advantage of the receptiveness in a child’s mind, and some countries are adamant about this. Take Sweden, for example. For many years they have legally stipulated that all children’s toys sold in the country should have some educational value. In addition, for such a rule to be passed it must be upheld by scientific research. Therefore, the advantage of incorporating an education element into toys is scientifically proven.

On the other hand, across the UK, children were wasting their time collecting and learning the statistics of each creature on each Pokemon card. If, however, these cards had been intertwined with more educational data the child could have simultaneously gained a more practical education. Due to the child learning large swathes of irrelevant and useless information it can be argued that the time would have been better spent with real facts and figures on the cards.

To conclude, scientific evidence from Sweden and fantasy games such as Pokemon with little educational value are two clear reasons why children’s leisure activities should have an element of learning involved.

Parents of Oxford school shooter sentenced to 10-15 years each

leisure time essay reading

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the Oxford school shooter, were sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison by a Michigan judge Tuesday after their convictions in separate trials on involuntary-manslaughter charges that stemmed from their son’s 2021 rampage, which killed four students.

Their sentencing ends one chapter of an emotional legal saga that has gripped the exurban Detroit community for more than two years and, more broadly, reshaped attitudes around parental liability in cases where children access a gun and harm others.

Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl A. Matthews said the two parents had repeated chances to help their son and curb his access to weapons, but failed to do so.

“Mr. Crumbley, it’s clear to this court that because of you, there was unfettered access to a gun or guns, as well as ammunition in your home,” Matthews told James Crumbley, 47.

“Mrs. Crumbley, you glorified the use and possession of these weapons,” Matthews said to Jennifer Crumbley, 45. “Your attitude toward your son and his behavior was dispassionate and apathetic. Your response to school staff after a 12-minute meeting was, ‘Are we done here?’”

The Crumbleys could ultimately serve less than eight years in prison; they must serve at least 10 years before they are eligible for parole and will be credited with 858 days of time served, having been in custody since their December 2021 arrest. If they are denied parole, they could serve a full 15 years behind bars.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald had sought a total of 10 to 15 years for each parent, detailing in a sentencing memo the trauma, terror and devastation caused by what she said was the Crumbleys’ gross negligence that resulted in their son killing Hana St. Juliana, 14; Tate Myre, 16; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; and Justin Shilling, 17, while wounding others at Oxford High School on Nov. 30, 2021.

After spending the early hours of the Tuesday hearing disputing various facts of the case raised in sentencing memos, attorneys ceded the stand to victims’ family members, who delivered powerful impact statements that described how the shooting had irreparably altered their lives. Most of the family members pleaded for Matthews to hand down the maximum sentence.

Nicole Beausoleil, Baldwin’s mother, cried as she drew a contrast between herself and the Crumbleys in the days and hours before and after the shooting.

“When you knew the gun was missing, you called the police knowing it was your son who took it; I was having family call every hospital describing what she looked like,” Beausoleil said. “When you texted, ‘Ethan don’t do it,’ I was texting Madisyn: ‘I love you, please call mom.’”

Reina St. Juliana, Hana’s older sister and an Oxford student the day of the shooting, described how their younger brother had to learn to write a eulogy before he learned to write school essays. Reina said that she never got to say goodbye to her sister and that the next time she saw Hana was to “recognize her lifeless body in the medical examiner’s office.”

James and Jennifer Crumbley, who are expected to appeal their convictions, addressed the court to express regrets — but they stopped short of owning their role in the tragedy, saying they had no knowledge of their son’s plan.

Jennifer Crumbley said she was “horrified” after learning that victims’ families had “misunderstood” her when she testified that she would not have done anything different leading up to the shooting.

“That answer is true because I thought my son did seem so normal,” Crumbley said. “I didn’t have a reason to do anything different. This was not something I foresaw.”

James Crumbley told the victims’ families that he grieved for their losses before ending his statement by echoing remarks made by Myre’s father, Buck. Moments earlier, Buck Myre had demanded transparency from Oxford school officials and law enforcement; the families have brought wrongful-death lawsuits against the school district and some faculty members.

James Crumbley insisted the whole truth of the case had not been told.

“I’m with you, Mr. Myre,” he concluded. “I, too, want the truth.”

Defense attorneys argued for leniency, noting that some of their evidence had not been included in the trials.

Both defendants highlighted that their own lives had been upended by the shooting and said they, too, were victims of their son’s manipulation. The Crumbleys have not spoken to their son since 2021, nor to each other since their arrests. Jennifer Crumbley requested a “fair and just sentence,” while James Crumbley explicitly asked to be released on electronic monitoring with credit for time served.

Shannon Smith, Jennifer Crumbley’s attorney, had requested that her client be sentenced to home confinement on electronic monitoring; she would live in Smith’s guesthouse. McDonald wrote that such a sentence would be a “slap in the face to the severity of the tragedy.”

But it was James Crumbley whom the prosecution described as particularly egregious as officials revealed the details of the electronic threats he made from jail that resulted in him losing most of his jail communication privileges midway through his March trial.

“Defendant’s jail calls showed he blamed everyone but himself for what happened and that he repeatedly referred to himself as being a ‘martyr,’” prosecutors wrote. They revealed that in calls made throughout 2022 and 2023, James Crumbley referred to McDonald as “that f---ing stupid whore b----” while addressing McDonald by name and saying he hoped she was listening.

“There will be retribution, believe me,” James Crumbley said in a December 2023 jail message. In a phone call placed a month later, he said he was on a “rampage” and McDonald “better be scared.”

“His jail calls show a total lack of remorse, he blames everyone but himself and he threatened the elected Prosecutor,” the prosecution wrote.

Days after the killings, McDonald made the unprecedented decision to criminally charge the parents for a mass school shooting committed by their child. Ethan Crumbley, 15 years old at the time, was charged as an adult and later sentenced to life without parole after pleading guilty to two dozen charges.

The Crumbley parents’ trials underscore a growing willingness among some prosecutors to charge adults who may have ignored warnings of violence. Hours after the verdict Tuesday, a grand jury in Newport News, Va., charged a school administrator in the case of a 6-year-old student who shot a teacher.

But some observers are wary of the precedent set by the Crumbley convictions. Randy Zelin, a defense lawyer who teaches at Cornell Law School, said he was worried by the prospect that courts could impose criminal liability on individuals who don’t pull a trigger or have knowledge or intent of a crime.

“It’s very easy in hindsight — not in the moment, not in real time, not in context — to look back in a vacuum and say, Look what the parents did and didn’t do. And I think that’s unfair,” Zelin said.

Kris Brown, president of the Brady: United Against Gun Violence gun-control organization, said the verdict left her with mixed feelings. Discourse around the case focused heavily on the decisions of individual parents and less on broader issues with how accessible firearms are for children.

“I’m frustrated that we’re not putting more emphasis on prevention. I think this verdict will scare parents,” Brown said, acknowledging that was its own form of deterrent.

Throughout the two trials, the prosecution’s overarching argument against the parents was that they bought a gun for a teenager who was clearly troubled, they failed to secure it, and they failed to take steps before the shooting, including on the morning of, that could have prevented the tragedy.

James Crumbley bought a 9mm SigSauer days before the shooting as an early Christmas gift, and Jennifer Crumbley bought ammunition and took her son to a shooting range to practice with it.

On the morning of the shooting, the parents were called in to discuss violent drawings their son had made on a math assignment, including a drawing of a black gun and a bullet-ridden body. The Crumbleys left their son at school and returned to work after he asked to stay. They were alerted hours later of a shooting at Oxford High School.

About 1 in 4 u.s. teachers say their school went into a gun-related lockdown in the last school year.

Twenty-five years after the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado , a majority of public K-12 teachers (59%) say they are at least somewhat worried about the possibility of a shooting ever happening at their school. This includes 18% who say they’re extremely or very worried, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand public K-12 teachers’ views on school shootings, how prepared they feel for a potential active shooter, and how they feel about policies that could help prevent future shootings.

To do this, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public school K-12 teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

We also used data from our 2022 survey of U.S. parents. For that project, we surveyed 3,757 U.S. parents with at least one child younger than 18 from Sept. 20 to Oct. 2, 2022. Find more details about the survey of parents here .

Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Another 31% of teachers say they are not too worried about a shooting occurring at their school. Only 7% of teachers say they are not at all worried.

This survey comes at a time when school shootings are at a record high (82 in 2023) and gun safety continues to be a topic in 2024 election campaigns .

A pie chart showing that a majority of teachers are at least somewhat worried about a shooting occurring at their school.

Teachers’ experiences with lockdowns

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing that about 1 in 4 teachers say their school had a gun-related lockdown last year.

About a quarter of teachers (23%) say they experienced a lockdown in the 2022-23 school year because of a gun or suspicion of a gun at their school. Some 15% say this happened once during the year, and 8% say this happened more than once.

High school teachers are most likely to report experiencing these lockdowns: 34% say their school went on at least one gun-related lockdown in the last school year. This compares with 22% of middle school teachers and 16% of elementary school teachers.

Teachers in urban schools are also more likely to say that their school had a gun-related lockdown. About a third of these teachers (31%) say this, compared with 19% of teachers in suburban schools and 20% in rural schools.

Do teachers feel their school has prepared them for an active shooter?

About four-in-ten teachers (39%) say their school has done a fair or poor job providing them with the training and resources they need to deal with a potential active shooter.

A bar chart showing that 3 in 10 teachers say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for an active shooter.

A smaller share (30%) give their school an excellent or very good rating, and another 30% say their school has done a good job preparing them.

Teachers in urban schools are the least likely to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter. About one-in-five (21%) say this, compared with 32% of teachers in suburban schools and 35% in rural schools.

Teachers who have police officers or armed security stationed in their school are more likely than those who don’t to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter (36% vs. 22%).

Overall, 56% of teachers say they have police officers or armed security stationed at their school. Majorities in rural schools (64%) and suburban schools (56%) say this, compared with 48% in urban schools.

Only 3% of teachers say teachers and administrators at their school are allowed to carry guns in school. This is slightly more common in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Donald Trump in 2020 than in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Joe Biden (5% vs. 1%).

What strategies do teachers think could help prevent school shootings?

A bar chart showing that 69% of teachers say better mental health treatment would be highly effective in preventing school shootings.

The survey also asked teachers how effective some measures would be at preventing school shootings.

Most teachers (69%) say improving mental health screening and treatment for children and adults would be extremely or very effective.

About half (49%) say having police officers or armed security in schools would be highly effective, while 33% say the same about metal detectors in schools.

Just 13% say allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. Seven-in-ten teachers say this would be not too or not at all effective.

How teachers’ views differ by party

A dot plot showing that teachers’ views of strategies to prevent school shootings differ by political party.

Republican and Republican-leaning teachers are more likely than Democratic and Democratic-leaning teachers to say each of the following would be highly effective:

  • Having police officers or armed security in schools (69% vs. 37%)
  • Having metal detectors in schools (43% vs. 27%)
  • Allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools (28% vs. 3%)

And while majorities in both parties say improving mental health screening and treatment would be highly effective at preventing school shootings, Democratic teachers are more likely than Republican teachers to say this (73% vs. 66%).

Parents’ views on school shootings and prevention strategies

In fall 2022, we asked parents a similar set of questions about school shootings.

Roughly a third of parents with K-12 students (32%) said they were extremely or very worried about a shooting ever happening at their child’s school. An additional 37% said they were somewhat worried.

As is the case among teachers, improving mental health screening and treatment was the only strategy most parents (63%) said would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. And allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools was seen as the least effective – in fact, half of parents said this would be not too or not at all effective. This question was asked of all parents with a child younger than 18, regardless of whether they have a child in K-12 schools.

Like teachers, parents’ views on strategies for preventing school shootings differed by party.

Note: Here are the questions used for this analysis , along with responses, and the survey methodology .
