The Master of Arts programs in Curriculum & Teaching in Physical Education will not be accepting applications for the 2023 cycle. Please check back for more information.
Our M.A. in Curriculum & Teaching in Physical Education focuses on the area of movement sciences called physical education and culture.
Our work examines how sociocultural, political, and economic forces have an impact on the body, school PE, physical activity, fitness, and health. In today’s context of public health, we are particularly interested in understanding how health disparities, structural inequalities, and the materiality of the socio-educational and economic resources young people have access to in the local community contexts of their daily lives inform their physicality development and health.
More about Physical Culture
Physical culture is about body movement and performance in spaces such as PPE class, sport, health/fitness, dance and more.
Physical Cultural Studies (PCS) encompasses the diversely focused field of scholarly work which is united by a commitment toward engaging varied dimensions or expressions of (in)active bodies or physical culture (Andrews & Silk, 2011). In this physical culture is understood as “cultural practices in which the physical body – the way it moves, is represented, has meanings assigned to it, and is imbued with power – is central” (Vertinsky, quoted in Silk & Andrews, 2011) Physical Cultural Studies is closely related to the fields of sport sociology, cultural studies, sociology of the body, body culture studies, queer studies and disability studies.

Student Testimonials
Courtney hudnall.
"Being that I am a PE teacher, I felt that this would increase my knowledge and help me to become a better PE teacher. They helped me in so many ways."
"I chose teaching because I wanted to do something that would have an impact on others while also doing the things I love. I love athletics. I also had an amazing PE teacher in elementary school who, to this day, is one of my role models,” Hudnall said. “So, when choosing a career, teaching PE seemed like a no-brainer. It has been so rewarding and worthwhile."
Hudnall was interested in earning a master's degree and discovered that WVU had an online Physical Education Teacher Education program.
While in the program, Hudnall says that each CPASS faculty member supported her success.
"They helped me in so many ways. They all were extremely easy to talk to and immensely helpful. Sean Bulger was one faculty member who I reached out to for a letter of recommendation," she said. "He was one professor who I would email about any uncertainty or advice with assignments or the program."
"As a faculty we are extremely proud of Courtney and this significant professional accomplishment. It was clear from her first day in the program that Courtney excelled at the fundamentals of effective instruction, while also demonstrating an innovative orientation as a teacher-leader in her school," Bulger, professor and associate dean for graduate and online education, said. "Our priority is that our graduate students can take and apply the knowledge and skills developed across the curriculum back to their local K-12 schools for the benefit of the learners in their classrooms. Courtney exemplifies that approach."
Hudnall, from White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., explains a typical day at school.
"I arrive at 7:15 a.m. to prep the gymnasium for an exciting lesson and greet students in the hall. My first class starts at 8 a.m. I take attendance, we do warm up laps to music and play a high energy game to get the heart pumping,” she said. “Then we get into the lesson/skill that I am teaching. I instruct K-5 all day for 45 minutes each, with my last class ending at 2:45."
Hudnall suggests that if incoming students are uncertain about whether to enroll in the PETE online program, they should take the leap.
"I learned so much. I was able to incorporate things I learned right away. The professors are extremely helpful and want to see that you have an understanding and succeed," she said.
As a true supporter of sports, Hudnall says that she is a huge soccer fan.
"WVU Women’s Soccer team is my favorite."
Hudnall was nominated for the award by school staff. After reviewing applications, the Board of Education selected winners for Elementary Teacher of the Year, Secondary Teacher of the Year and an overall Greenbrier County Teacher of the Year. Hudnall plans to submit additional information to be considered for the West Virginia Teacher of the Year award.

Program Description
This Master of Science degree program will prepare, develop, and advance the skills of both aspiring and practicing physical education teachers (P–12). The physical education teacher major offers three tracks leading to Initial, Professional, or Transitional B New York State teacher certification. Students seeking Transitional B certification must be employed as a full-time New York City public school teacher.
The profession of teacher education is licensed by the New York State Education Department. Therefore, program requirements are subject to change. All students should consult with the Department of Secondary Education for the current requirements.
Program Requirements (30–49 Credits)
Each student is evaluated individually based upon prior experiences. Based upon this evaluation and current certification requirements of the New York State Education Department, courses in education or another department may be substituted for required courses with permission of the department program coordinator.
The Professional Track (Option 1 A) enhances teaching skills for students who have their New York State Initial Certification in teaching physical education (P–12). Graduates of this track will be prepared to supplement their instructional, evaluative, and supervisory skills in their positions as teachers, coaches, athletic directors, administrators, and other education-related roles. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree in physical education and New York State Initial Teacher Certification in physical education prior to enrollment in this program. The professional track leads to New York State Professional certification.

The pre-professional track leads to New York State Initial and, after three years of fulltime teaching, professional certification.
The TransB Track (Option C) is designed for candidates enrolled in a DOE Collaborative program.
The New York State Education Department licenses graduates of registered teacher education programs who meet the State requirements for certification therefore, program requirements are subject to change.

What is a physical therapist?
When individuals are recovering from injury or disease, the physical therapist evaluates and directs the recovery process to relieve pain, make them stronger, and help them to regain use of an affected limb. Physical therapists also teach patients and their families what to do so that healing continues through self-care at home.
Physical therapy attempts to meet an individual's health goals, whether a patient's goal is walking without assistance or running a marathon. A physical therapist is an integral part of the health care team that makes these goals a reality.
