Basic Eligibility is a Masters degree. If you think you are an exceptionally good candidate, you can apply for a direct PhD after BTech/B.E. with a valid GATE score. IITH typically admits students to the PhD program twice in a year, in the month of Nov and in the month of April. IITH does not make newspaper advertisements regarding admission and the aspirants are requested to follow our website for admission notification. The applications received are screened by the individual departments and the successful applicants will be called for a written test and interview. The financial assistance for the Ph.D. program under MoE (Ministry of Education) and all other funding categories except PMRF and External category across all departments is 5 years.

IBS Hyderabad offers full-time Ph.D in Management Program with specializations in Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR; and Ph.D in Economics Program, separately. The full-time Ph.D Programs are designed for students interested in management teaching, research, and consultancy.

The program has five phases and can be completed in four years.

The objective of the coursework is to impart scholarship and to equip the student with the latest developments in the discipline, including the tools of research. In the first year the student takes 8 courses. They consist of Seminar Courses, Inter-disciplinary Courses, and Research Methods. The course work paves the way to develop Doctoral Thesis Work. The performance of the students in each stage is assessed by means of continuous evaluation throughout the semesters.

Candidates who don’t possess an MBA degree, but possessing PG in any allied disciplines, have to attend first year MBA courses as a prerequisite to proceed to the Ph.D Program.

Features of the Program Associateship

During the program, the students will be associated with senior faculty members who are engaged in teaching, research, consultancy, and institutional development.

Summer Research Projec

Students will do a 3 months summer research project in their area of specialization under the guidance of a mentor and will present a research seminar before he/she takes the Ph.D qualifying exam. The objective of this is to ensure that the student is exposed to research writing leading to a future publication.

Visiting Scholar Program (VSP)

After successful completion of Ph.D qualifying examination, in the third year of the program the students are eligible to spend 5 months abroad under the Visiting Scholar Program (VSP) on self-supported basis. The main objective of the VSP is to make sure that these candidates get exposure to the teaching and research environment in an international context. Fellowship / Stipend for Full- time Ph.D. Program

Pre-PhD students admitted into the first year of the MBA program will be given a fellowship of Rs. 20,000 (Rupees Twenty thousand only) per month and free accommodation. All students admitted into the Full-time Ph.D program will be given a fellowship of Rs. 25,000 (Rupees Twenty Five Thousand only) per month and free accommodation in the first year only. After passing the Ph.D qualifying examination, the students will be paid a fellowship of Rs. 35,000 (Rupees Thirty Five Thousand only) till the student defends the thesis proposal. Stipend of Rs. 40,000 (Rupees Forty Thousand only) per month will be paid to the student, after successful defense of thesis proposal and up to the completion of four years of Ph.D Program or completion of Ph.D Thesis, whichever is earlier. In lieu of this fellowship, the students may be required to provide support for teaching / research / administrative activities of the University for up to 10 hours a week. A professional development grant of Rs. 20,000 per annum is also provided to the students for the four years, for attending conferences, workshops and seminars. On successful defense of the Ph.D thesis by the students, they can pursue their career in any organization of their choice. However, such candidates may also opt to apply to IFHE or any of its sponsor/ constituent/affiliate/associate organizations and their request may be considered for a position of faculty at a suitable pay package, under a separate offer of appointment based on their educational background, performance in the Ph.D Program and availability of vacancies. In the event, the student withdraws from the program, the student is liable to refund the stipend and the program fee provided as financial assistance by IBS.

Part-time Ph.D. Program in Management

IBS Hyderabad offers Ph.D Program for working executives in Management with specializations in Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR. The Part-time Ph.D Program in Management is designed for practicing corporate executives, faculty members & research scholars who are aspiring to become thought leaders in the domain of academic research. Ph.D program for working executives works in a similar manner as the full-time program. The course work is completed over a period of two years and the candidate is expected to make eight visits to campus for 9 days each in a quarter during the first two years. The process of Qualifying Examination, Thesis Proposal and Thesis Defense are the same as the Full-time Ph.D Program.

Selection Process for the PhD programs is conducted online for the candidates shortlisted based on (IBSAT2020/GMAT/CAT 2020/ NMAT by GMACTM 2020 scores). The admission decision is based on the overall performance of the candidate. A composite score is computed for each candidate based on his/her past academic record and performance in the Aptitude Test in Research Methods, Micro Presentation Technical cum Personal Interview.

Eligibility

Graduation (any discipline) with 50% and above marks with English as a medium of instruction AND
Post Graduation in Management (Full time) with specialization in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management and Operations from an UGC approved University with 55% and above marks; OR
Post Graduation (Full-time) in Economics/Commerce / Psychology / Sociology / PublicAdministration/Statistics/Mathematics/ or in an allied discpline from a UGC recognized University in India or abroad with 55% and above marks. Candidates who are offered admission are required to undertake the first year MBA courses as a prerequsite to continue in the Ph.D program. OR
Professional qualification like CFA/CA/CWA/CS with 55% and above marks.

The candidates who qualify on the basis of IBSAT/ GMATTM/ CAT/NMAT by GMACTM are called for Selection Process at IBS Hyderabad in February /March 2024. The final selection is based on performance in Micro Presentation and a technical cum Personal Interview along with past academic performance.

Admission Procedure

Candidates seeking admission to Ph.D Program in Management (Full time/ Part time) offered by IBS Hyderabad have to appear for IBSAT 2023.

IBSAT is conducted by The ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education (deemed-to-be University under Section 3 of UGC Act 1956), for students seeking admission to the MBA / PhD programs of IBS, Hyderabad. IBSAT 2023 is an aptitude test based on Computer Based Test (CBT) format. The test is of 2 hours duration. Scores from 2021 onwards of GMAT TM/CAT/ NMAT by GMACTM/XAT are accepted in place of IBSAT 2023. IFHE Alumni, MPhil Degree holders and UGC NET qualified candidates are exempted from IBSAT 2023.

Accommodation

Free single on-campus accommodation is provided in the first year. The candidates are allotted individual non- AC rooms with a common wash room facility.

Fee for Full-time Ph.D Program

All the Ph.D students who have been offered admission have to a pay Rs. 40,000 towards admission fee. The fee for the 4 year Ph.D Program (Full time/ Part time) is Rs. 1.20 lakhs per annum. The semester fee of Rs. 60,000 per semester is waived off for the full time students, subject to satisfactory academic performance. Part time Ph.D students will have to pay a semester fee of Rs. 60,000 per semester for 8 semesters/4 years. The full time Ph.D students will be paid stipend of Rs. 25,000 per month in the first year. It would be increased to Rs. 35,000 per month subject to passing the Ph.D qualifying examination and further increased to Rs. 40,000 per month subject to successful defense of the Ph.D proposal up to the completion of four years of Ph.D Program or completion of Ph.D Thesis, whichever is earlier.

Economics Association

The Economics Association, as the name suggests, is the association for the MSc Economics students at Hyderabad campus. The primary aim of the association is to inculcate and nurture an interest in the economics and finance world among all students on campus, not just those studying economics. Towards this end, various events are held, both as part of ATMOS, as well as in general. Events conducted during ATMOS include Courtroom, Arthashastra – The Business Quiz and workshops on finance. In addition to this, there are several guest talks and workshops conducted throughout the year by some of the best names in the field of finance and economics in the country and abroad. Panel discussions are also held on regular basis to keep abreast with various developments and be familiar with the different point of views and perceptions. The association also maintains a blog, where articles written by our students and guest contributions are posted regularly. In addition to this, the association also conceived and organized the flagship edition of its financial conclave, Finnovate, in February 2017. Finnovate will continue as an annual event with eminent speakers talking on contemporary issues and exciting quizzes/competitions for students.

The average completion time is between four to five years.

Is it possible to complete the Ph.D. programme on a part-time basis?

No. However, a student may seek employment at the end of four and a half years with the concurrence of his / her thesis advisory committee and Ph.D. Programme Chair.

Who should apply? What are the typical backgrounds of Ph.D. students?

Ph.D. programme looks for highly motivated students interested in pursuing research careers in high levels of specialization requiring high scholastic aptitude. Typical students have varied backgrounds. Please follow the link to know about backgrounds of current students.

What are the qualities which IIMA is looking for in applicants to the program?

The Programme looks for highly motivated and disciplined candidates with strong academic preparation who exhibit curiosity, desire to learn, and have an inclination towards high levels of specialized research.

How will I sustain myself for 4-5 years, if I have a family?

IIMA provides sufficient fellowship (including fees, boarding, lodging and stipend) for five years to doctoral students. Please refer later section for details.

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

How do I apply? What is the process of admission to the programme? Where can I get the forms? Can I apply online?

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests ( CAT / GATE / UGC JRF / GMAT / GRE / ICAR-SRF)

What are the important deadlines?

Last Date for Ph.D. Programme Application: January 17, 2023 Interview dates (Tentative) - March/April, 2023, Joining dates – May/June 2023

What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

The key stages are

1. First year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses and some recommended PGP course/s),

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. Details are available in the Ph.D. Programme manual.

How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

What support is available for presenting research papers in indian and international conferences.

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

How do I find a job, after completing my Ph.D. studies?

Jobs depend on a student's competence and high level of specialization achieved during the programme. There are recruiters coming to the campus, faculty advisors provide references, and also through other informal/formal channels.
