Thank You For Coming movie review: Bhumi Pednekar's film wants to smash patriarchy but takes too long to climax

Kanika (Bhumi Pednekar)'s biggest disappointment in life is having a pleasureless sex life. However, she finally experiences the bliss but does not remember with whom?

Bhumi Pednekar's character Kanika mouths a 'F**k You' to the audience in a school auditorium. She becomes the flag-bearer of women to own up to their happiness, freedom and liberalisation. We suddenly hear cheers of 'Smash Patriarchy' but nowhere does Karan Boolani's Thank You For Coming even touch an iota of feminism and women empowerment. Rather it becomes a bizarre obsession of a woman to get an orgasm as if that's the ultimate manna to paradise. 

The plot revolves around Kanika Kapoor (Bhumi Pednekar) aka Kaandu Kanika. She comes from a single parent which had subjected her to taboo and mockery since childhood. However, her life's motto and biggest disappointment is not being able to have an orgasm with all the men she's been with. Her best friends Pallavi (Dolly Singh) and Tina (Shibani Bedi) are her biggest support systems in her 'misery'. When she agrees to marry the simple but endearing Jeevan (Pradhuman Singh) who adores her, she ends up having the 'climax' she was waiting for at her own Roka ceremony. The only thing is Kanika fails to remember with whom she chose to have the first orgasm of her life. 

Thank You For Coming is everything that feminism and sexual liberation is not. The female protagonist attaches her life's goal in achieving an orgasm and what follows is a laborious string of male bashing, patronizing the idea of a fairytale romance and getting a completely wrong notion of an 'independent and empowered woman.' The writing is lousy, superficial and borrows few words from wannabe Instagram captions. In one of the scenes, Bhumi Pednekar's mother tells her that she is a strong, independent, successful woman and you scratch your head and wonder where have you even seen the female protagonist hustling for a living? The message in the climax and the big reveal of Kanika's orgasmic pleasure is utterly laughable and predictable. The biggest highlight of the plot happens to be the inclusion of the drag community through Rani Kohenur's character which is endearing and relevant. The message against a teen getting slutshamed after her intimate video with a guy gets leaked also commands attention. 

Talking about the performances, Bhumi Pednekar's performance comes across as over-the-top and preachy. The organic tint is missing in her performance and it almost looks as if the actress was trying too hard to be cool, bold, gutsy and vulnerable. Instead it is Shibani Bedi and Dolly Singh who shine as her gal pals. At least they come across as real in their performance. Shehnaaz Gill is again royally wasted despite her honest effort to do a decent job.   Pradhuman Singh is definitely one of the major standouts and you find his character endearing. The other impressive performance was from Dolly Ahluwalia who was a treat to watch as Bhumi's grandmother. Anil Kapoor and Karan Kundrra's cameo were a mammoth waste with the latter's rather embarrassing reference to his girlfriend Tejasswi Prakash's show 'I find Naagins sexy.' However, it's Sushant Divgikar aka Rani Kohenur who steals all the show with his brief appearance. You cannot help but cheer and root for him as he puts up a phenomenal drag performance in a catchy rendition of 'Pari Hoon Main.' Another brilliant and hard-hitting performance comes from Saloni Daini. Her transformation from a child artist and comedian 'Gangubai' to delivering such a mature act is simply top-notch. 

The costumes by Tarun Tahiliani is top notch and you've to owe the female leads for their seamless sartorial outings. Apart from the reprised version of 'Pari Hoon Main' and Ritviz's 'Baarat', none of the songs manage to strike a chord with you. Thank You For Coming could've send a strong message regarding the women's empowerment and liberation but the pseudo wokeism takes over unceremoniously. But definitely some brownie points for being probably the first ever film for highlighting drag in an uber cool manner. But this one misses the mark otherwise.

‘Thank You for Coming’ Review: Hindi Sex Comedy Finds the Elusive Female Orgasm in a Coming-of-Age Tale

“Seventy precent of women don’t orgasm because 90 precent of men don’t know how to get her there,” a character boldly states in director Karan Boolani ’s humorous if sometimes overlong comedy, “Thank You for Coming.” Co-written by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh and anchored by a vibrant comedic performance from star Bhumi Pednekar, this coming-of-age tale is narrated like a fable — or a very long episode of “ Sex and the City ,” albeit more akin to the cleaned-up versions aired on TBS. For a film so centered on sex and the elusive female orgasm, there’s a lot more talk about sex than there is actual sex on screen. 

The daughter of an unmarried gynecologist, Kanika was born to stand out. At every stage of life, she bucks conventions of how a proper young woman should behave, although as an adult she suffers from the same dissatisfied longing for something more — in this case actual sexual satisfaction — that plagues most rom-com heroines.

As a child, she interrupts a school pageant presentation of a fairy tale to explain to her classmates how sex works and then is made to apologize for it by school officials. Thanks to the staunch support of her mother and grandmother, Kanika continues to forge a rebellious path as an independent woman. She’s decided her princess is going to kiss — and sleep with — a lot of frogs to find the perfect prince charming. As a teenager, she sleeps with her first boyfriend. As a college student, she sleeps with one of her professors. In her twenties, she wastes nearly a decade in a long-term relationship with a man with commitment issues. 

Things go awry, however, when Kanika gets rip-roaring drunk at their engagement party, flirts with all her exes, and blacks out, only to wake up the next morning realizing she’s finally experienced the big O. Unable to find out who her carnal partner was, she sets out to solve the mystery with the help of her besties. It takes the entire first hour to establish what becomes the main thrust of the film, and while it does help reveal a lot about Kanika, it also drags “Thank You for Coming” out much longer than it needs to be.

As Kanika reconnects with her exes, their love stories are no longer presented through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia. Rather than rebellious romances, there’s a history of trauma. In high school, she was slut-shamed by her teenage lover and his friends. In college, she was just one of many young girls seduced in the same way by her dashing professor. In her twenties, her boyfriend’s commitment-phobia was rooted in something more personal than she could have ever imagined. These revelations push Kanika to reevaluate herself as well, barrelling the film toward its fairly obvious ending. 

Along with Kanika’s journey toward feminist and sexual self-actualization, the film is peppered with scenes of Pallavi’s daughter Rabeya (Saloni Daini) as she comes of age herself. The film is at its best when it explores intergenerational female strength, and how this female friendship and solidarity are the keys to smashing the patriarchy. By refusing to marry the father of her child, Kanika’s mother laid the foundation on which Kanika and her friends flourished with newfound sexual liberation, and yet even they begin to buckle under the weight of societal expectations when Rabeya is subjected to slut-shaming herself. Although this parallel is the emotional center of the movie and guides Kanika toward one of her most cathartic moments, it remains underdeveloped, lingering only in the margins of the film. 

Always in the center of the frame, Pednekar is almost too luminous as she dances and seduces many a night away. However, she balances her overwhelming beauty with the same kind of scrappy screwball energy that made comedy stars out of similarly impossibly gorgeous actresses like Carole Lombard or Goldie Hawn. 

The biggest fault of “Thank You for Coming” is that Anand and Singh’s script tries to tackle too many thematic issues, ultimately short-changing most of them. However, it’s hard to deny Pednekar’s irrepressible charm and importance of the empowering if somewhat basic message of female solidarity and self-actualization at the film’s heart. 

“Thank You for Coming” premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival . It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Thank you for coming Review:  ये फिल्म खत्म हुई तो लगा Thank you for ending. एक मीम काफी मशहूर है. कहना क्या चाहते हो भाई.इस फिल्म को देखते हुए यही लगा.इस फिल्म की प्रोड्यूसर एकता कपूर को एक कमेटी बनानी चाहिए जो ये पता लगाए कि ये फिल्म क्यों बनाई गई. किसलिए बनाई गई और क्या बनने के बाद किसी ने देखी.इन दिनों वुमन एम्पावरमेंट और वुमन इंडिपेंडेंस के नाम पर काफी कुछ होता है.काफी कंटेंट बनता है लेकिन इसका मतलब ये नहीं कि आप कुछ भी बना दोगे

कहानी ये कहानी एक ऐसी लड़की की है जिसे शुरू से लड़के ये कहते हैं कि उसे ठीक से सेक्स करना नहीं आता और उसे जिंदगी में कभी orgasm नहीं हुआ तो बस वो orgasm की तलाश में लग जाती है.सोचिए orgasm की तलाश में और किसी के भी साथ सोने को तैयार है और पूरे इमोशन्स के साथ, इस कहानी में कभी भी कुछ भी होता है.वो लड़की किसी के भी साथ कुछ भी करने को तैयार रहती है. बस चरम सुख की प्राप्ति के लिए. आगे कहानी में क्या है.ये देखने के लिए थिएटर मत जाइएगा. ओटीटी पर आ जाएगी और कुछ करने को ना हुआ तो देख लीजिएगा.  

कैसी है फिल्म ये कहानी देखकर लगता है कि या तो हम बहुत पीछे रह गए हैं या ये फिल्म ही बड़े आगे वाले जमाने की बनाई गई है.फिल्म शुरू से ही बस एक ही मुद्दे पर चलती है चरम सुख की तलाश पर और आप सोचने पर मजबूर हो जाते हैं कि क्या ऐसा भी होता है. क्या कोई लड़की ऐसा भी करती है. हमने तो नहीं देखा. आपको समझ नहीं आता कि क्या हो रहा है. क्यों हो रहा है, किसलिए हो रहा है. इंटीमेट सीन भी इरिटेट करते हैं.कहानी कहीं से कहीं कनेक्ट हो जाती है लेकिन दर्शकों से कनेक्ट नहीं हो पाती. सोशल मीडिया इंफ्लुएंसर्स की भीड़ जुटाकर फिल्म को पब्लिसिटी तो दिलवाई जा सकती है लेकिन अच्छी फिल्म के लिए अच्छी कहानी चाहिए, अच्छा ट्रीटमेंट चाहिए.जो इस फिल्म में मिसिंग है और एंड में आप समझ नहीं पाते कि ये फिल्म क्या ये बात कर रही थी जो क्लाइमैक्स में की गई है और आपको लगता है कि आपके साथ धोखा हो गया है. 

एक्टिंग भूमि पेडनेकर लीड रोल में हैं. उनका काम ठीक है लेकिन फिल्म की कहानी और ट्रीटमेंट ही बकवास है तो वो क्या करतीं. शहनाज गिल को फिल्म के प्रमोशन में काफी आगे रखा गया.उनकी फॉलोइंग जबरदस्त है .उसे भुनाने की कोशिश की गई. शहनाज फिल्म में लगी भी अच्छी हैं लेकिन यहां आपको वो मासूम वाली शहनाज नहीं दिखेंगी, हॉट एंड सिजलिंग वाली दिखेंगी. लेकिन उन्हें भी काफी कम स्पेस मिला है और वो अचानक गायब भी हो जाती हैं.कुशा कपिला का काम ठीक है लेकिन उन्हें काफी कम स्पेस मिला है. शिबानी बेदी ने भी ठीक एक्टिंग की है.कुल मिलाकर एक्टर्स का कम ठीक है लेकिन जब डायरेक्टर क्लियर नहीं होगा तो एक्टर क्या करेंगे? 

डायरेक्शन करन बुलानी ने फिल्म को डायरेक्ट किया है. वो कहानी को या तो ठीक से समझ नहीं पाए या समझा नहीं पाए. मॉर्डन होने का मतलब, आजादी का मतलब अगर ये सब होता है तो हम पिछड़े ही सही हैं. कोई लड़की किसी भी टाइम किसी के भी साथ सेक्स करने को ऐसे ही तो तैयार नहीं हो जाती तो डायरेक्टर साहब को समझना पड़ेगा कि वो कहना क्या चाहते हैं. हम तो नहीं समझ पाए.

कुल मिलाकर मुझे तो ये फिल्म लड़कियों की अपमान ज्यादा लगी.फिल्म में चमक धमक है अच्छे चेहरे हैं, अच्छे कपड़े हैं लेकिन इन सबसे अच्छी फिल्म नहीं बनती.उसके लिए अच्छी कहानी और ट्रीटमेंट चाहिए

The teaser of Allu Arjun's much-awaited film, 'Pushpa: The Rule', is here. The makers of 'Pushpa 2' unveiled the teaser on the occasion of the lead actor's 42nd birthday. The teaser is nothing short of a spectacle and has all the necessary elements to become a blockbuster. Directed by Sukumar, 'Pushpa: The Rule' is a sequel to the superhit film, 'Pushpa: The Rise', which hit theatres in 2021.

Mythri Movie Makers, the production house of 'Pushpa', shared the teaser link of the film while wishing Allu Arjun on his birthday. Their post read, "Celebrate his arrival. Adore his fire within. Experience the goosebumps. Happy Birthday icon Star @alluarjun (sic)."

The one-minute-long teaser of 'Pushpa: The Rule' shows a temple festival set-up where Allu Arjun's Pushparaj, clad in a saree, is walking with a trishul in his hands. He then thrashes goons as hundreds of peple watch him.

The teaser showcases the power-packed 'Jaathara' sequence. Also known as 'Sammakka Saralamma Jaathara' is a festival to honour the tribal godesses. The festival is celebrated in Telangana and every year, more than 10 million devotees take part in the four-day event.

Allu Arjun celebrated his 42nd birthday with his friends and family members at his Hyderabad home. His fans gathered outside his house and chanted 'Pushpa' at midnight.

Director Sukumar's 'Pushpa' was a critically acclaimed film, which set the cash registers ringing as well. The film, which was originally shot in Telugu, released in multiple languages. 'Pushpa' turned out to be a huge hit not just in the southern states, but also in the North belt.

After three years, the much-awaited sequel, 'Pushpa: The Rule' is all set to release in theatres on August 15, 2024 . The film features Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil in lead roles. The shooting of 'Pushpa 2' is still underway and is likely to be wrapped up in the coming months.
