The UPSC CSE exam 2025 (also known as the IAS exam) is a competitive exam conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The purpose of this exam is to recruit capable candidates to various posts in the government. The UPSC Civil services posts are considered prestigious and so they are extremely sought after. This makes the IAS exam one of the toughest, most competitive exams in India.

To be eligible for the above posts, candidates must go through the famously competitive IAS 2025 selection process. As a part of the UPSC CSE 2025 selection process , candidates must go through 3 stages. These are the IAS prelims exam, mains exam and interview round.

The UPSC Civil Services Prelims exam is an objective type exam holding 400 marks in total. This round is a screening test, so the marks scored here will not be considered in the final UPSC 2025 selection process. The number of candidates considered successful in the prelims and deemed eligible to attempt the mains exam will be around 12 times the number of UPSC CSE 2025 vacancies.

The IAS Mains exam 2025 consists of a series of 9 papers holding a total of 1750 marks. The IAS mains is a subjective, written exam, with each paper having a duration of three hours. The marks obtained in this round will be considered in the final UPSC IAS selection.

Finally, the IAS 2025 interview round will be held. In this round, candidates will be judged based on their intellectual qualities, social traits and awareness of current happenings. The IAS interview will be conducted by a panel of unbiased jury members. Candidates who clear this round of the UPSC IAS 2025 exam will be considered successful and will be appointed to a Civil Services post.

Candidates who pass all three rounds of the UPSC CSE Exam 2025 will be appointed to one of many different kinds of government posts. UPSC CSE posts can largely be categorized into two types, All India Posts (of which is IAS, a highly sought after post where the colloquial name of the Civil services exam comes from) and posts in Central services. UPSC Civil Service Mains - Preparation Strategy for Essay Paper

While preparing for UPSC Civil Services  Mains Exam, aspirants spend a lot of time in handling the general studies and optional subjects as well. But they should also focus equally on Essay paper. You need to write two essays, for each one you get four topics to choose from. Each essay accounts for 125 marks. However, it is prudent to prepare for this paper since it is for 250 marks and can make or break your final tally. This article gives you a few tips to follow while preparing for the essay paper.

Aspirants would find this article very helpful while preparing for the IAS Exam .

How to Prepare for Essay in UPSC Civil Service Exam?

  • Read many good essays and articles. This will give you a feel of what constitutes a well-written essay.
  • Build a habit of reading newspaper editorials every day. Essay questions are many times asked from current affairs.
  • Note down relevant lines or quotes which you can use in your essay, whenever you read books or newspapers.
  • Have a good collection of opening and closing lines.
  • Prepare some material on general topics like development, women, education, healthcare, internet, technology, science, etc. Your material should include quotations, case studies, examples, government initiatives, etc. This will be useful while writing the essay. But beware of writing all that you have prepared. You must fine-tune your essay according to the topic, not as per what you have prepared.
  • Focus more on real-life examples rather than theoretical jargon. Even though many topics may seem like theoretical, you must write relevant, contemporary, current affairs-related stuff in your essay. For instance, in a topic like “Can capitalism bring inclusive growth?” (UPSC Mains 2015) you need not write about the entire history of capitalism, but tune your answer towards current events and focus on ‘inclusive growth’.
  • Similarly, even if your essay question is philosophical, your essay need not be so. It should be relevant to current times.
  • You should try to approach a topic from different angles like political, social, historical, environmental, ethical, etc.
  • You must prepare by writing essays during your preparation time. Also get feedback on the essays you write from mentors, teachers or seniors.
  • You essay should have an introduction, body and conclusion.
  • Resist the urge to give too aggressive or one-sided arguments in the essay no matter how passionate you are about the topic.

The above details would help candidates prepare for UPSC 2023 .

We estimate shocks that explain most of the variation in the current account at business cycle frequencies and over the long run. We then explore, using a standard open-economy macro model, which macroeconomic shocks are behind the empirical dominant drivers of the current account at business-cycle frequency. Rather than financial shocks or aggregate shocks to supply or demand, shocks to the relative demand between home and foreign goods are found to play a pivotal role in current account dynamics.
