College Park Scholars makes its home in the Cambridge Community , which consists of five residence halls and a community center on the north side of the University of Maryland (UMD) campus, near the Eppley Recreation Center and Xfinity Center.

Why Live Together

Scholars live and learn together. Living together in the Cambridge Community gives Scholars students enhanced opportunities to interact with and learn from one another, and we know from decades of experience that our students benefit from living with their peers from Scholars.

And, because program offices are located in the Cambridge Community residence halls, Scholars enjoy easy access to their faculty.

Commuter Students Welcome

While we encourage students to live in the Scholars residence halls to take full advantage of the Scholars experience, you do not have to live on campus to be a part of our program. Students who plan to commute to UMD are welcome to participate in Scholars. Commuters have access to common spaces in the residence halls where their Scholars programs are located and are invited to attend program events in the Cambridge Community, giving them more opportunities to engage with their peers outside the classroom.

Housing/Dining Services Agreement

Every first-year student who plans to live in campus residence halls must complete a Housing/Dining Services Agreement by May 1. Those who submit the Housing/Dining Services Agreement after the May 1 deadline will not be guaranteed on-campus housing.

Rooms & Roommate Assignments

All housing assignments are managed by the Department of Resident Life . Scholars students will be assigned to a Cambridge Community residence hall.

You will be matched with another student in Scholars who reports having your same sleep, neatness and study habits. If you would prefer, you may request a roommate who is in your Scholars program or in another Scholars program.

Move-In Day

Move-in for incoming Scholars this year is TBA.  More information about fall move-in  will be available later this summer from the Department of Resident Life's website.

Director of Resident Life:   Dennis Passarella-George

University of Maryland students engage, learn, and discover together, and the Maryland Residential Experience provides students with a tremendous opportunity to magnify those experiences while living at the center of everything needed to have an enriching, meaningful, and engaging college experience.

The Division of Student Affairs’ Department of Resident Life manages the residence halls and creates opportunities for all residents to thrive and grow. We promote growth and learning, cultivate connections through community, and create safe, inclusive residential environments to foster a sense of belonging for all. Living on-campus offers Terps convenience, flexibility, affordability, and 24/7 support while immersed in the Terrapin Community!

A vital and fundamental component of a student’s UMD education is beginning their Maryland experience by living on campus. As part of their four-year housing plan, all undergraduate students should begin their University of Maryland experience by living in the residence halls.

While living on campus is not required, nine of every ten students in Maryland's undergraduate first-year class make the choice to live in the residence halls. More than 90 professional and graduate staff and over 500 undergraduate student employees are available to support on-campus students and to help ensure a safe, engaging, and enjoyable living environment.

The on-campus housing program is home to more than 12,500 undergraduate students living in university-owned residence halls and public-private partnership apartment communities. Thirty-nine residence halls are home to approximately 9,500 undergraduate students. Four different living styles are available to students who live in the residence halls: traditional halls, semi-suites, suites, and apartments. Within traditional housing, where most first-year residents live, single, double, triple, and quadruple room occupancy exists. All rooms have a data jack for each student and wi-fi capability. One telephone jack is provided in each room.

Our nationally acclaimed Living-Learning Programs include Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students (ACES), BioFIRE Living & Learning Center, Carillon Communities, CIVICUS, College Park Scholars, Design Cultures and Creativity, Flexus: The Dr. Marilyn Berman Pollans Women in Engineering Living & Learning Community, Gemstone, Honors Global Communities, Honors Humanities, Integrated Life Sciences, Jiménez-Porter Writers' House, Language House, University Honors, Virtus Men in Engineering Program, and Interdisciplinary Business Honors. All of these programs add to the diversity and quality of residence hall housing options.

First-year students are guaranteed on-campus housing provided they complete their Residence Hall Housing and Dining Services Agreement, Enrollment Confirmation, and enrollment deposit by May 1 (December 15 for spring semester). Transfer students who want to live on campus should also complete these actions and will be allotted housing in the residence halls on a space-available basis. Students may apply for housing without confirming university enrollment. The Residence Hall Housing and Dining Agreement will be canceled if a student does not enroll at UMD full-time. A $50 housing application fee is assessed upon submission of the Housing Agreement.

In addition to the university-owned residence halls, Capstone On-Campus Management (COCM) operates The Courtyards (CTY) and South Campus Commons (SCC) apartment communities, which are located on university land and house upper-class undergraduate students. The university's Off-Campus Housing Services Office also offers support and services for students seeking alternative housing options in and around the greater College Park area.

Join a diverse group of talented peers from across the country and around the world who have chosen the on-campus Maryland Residential Experience. Live here and be within steps of resources and support on your path to graduation!

Res Life Releases Housing Assignments, Move-in Appointments; Extends Cancelation Deadline

By Maryland Today Staff Aug 10, 2020

The Department of Resident Life will release appointments for moving into residence halls tomorrow, and has extended the deadline for canceling an On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement for the 2020-21 academic year through noon on Wednesday.

In an email sent this afternoon to all on-campus Fall 2020 residents, Valronica Scales, director of resident life, said that residence halls will open as scheduled. Campus housing assignments are available now by logging into the Campus Housing Portal.

Residents will be able to schedule one of two options for a move-in appointment: “set up and go” or traditional. Scales strongly encouraged students to select the former, if possible. Details are available on the move-in options website .

All students must provide confirmation of a negative COVID-19 viral test taken within 14 days prior to moving in Aug. 26-30. Those who test positive will be required to stay at home, follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, and be cleared by a health care provider before coming to campus. More information is forthcoming from the University Health Center. Students will be allowed to make a “set up and go” move-in appointment before that confirmation is provided.

Resident Life will also accommodate a late check-in for those who want to delay arriving at their residence hall until after Aug. 31. Send an email to [email protected] with your name, UID and preferred or expected arrival date. It will hold your space and notify you of new move-in instructions after Sept. 1.

Students who wish to cancel their On-Campus Housing and Dining Agreement can send an email to [email protected] with their name, UID and reason for cancellation by noon on Wednesday, and will have their cancellation fee waived. They have the option to complete a new housing agreement for Spring 2021 housing and will be placed on a waiting list.

Maryland Today is produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications for the University of Maryland community on weekdays during the academic year, except for university holidays.

Faculty, staff and students receive the daily Maryland Today e-newsletter. To be added to the subscription list, sign up here:

Our accommodated housing process, in partnership with the Department of Resident Life , is designed to provide an inclusive residential community for students with disabilities. Whether it's a physical adaptation to your assigned residence hall room or other requirement, we’re here to ensure your housing experience is comfortable and accessible.

Important Deadlines

For first time residence hall applicants.

  • June 30: Deadline for fall admission requests
  • December 1: Deadline for spring admission requests

For Returning Residence Hall Students With Approved Accommodations

  • February 26: Deadline to apply for housing for the 2024-2025 academic year

For Current Residence Hall Students Requesting Accommodations for the First Time

ADS will review accommodated housing requests for students currently living within the residence halls as they are received.

Please note: All accommodated housing requests are reviewed in the order they are received.

Advanced notice of accommodated housing requests by the above stated deadlines ensures that any approved accommodation can be facilitated prior to move-in.

Any requests received after the above deadlines cannot be guaranteed they will be implemented prior to the assigned move-in date. The Department of Resident Life will continue to work with students on the reassignment process as housing space and inventory allow.

Requesting Housing Accommodations for the First Time

If you're requesting accommodations for the first time, register with ADS and follow the process explained on our website.

Returning to Residence Halls With Approved Accommodations

ADS and the Department of Resident Life keep a record of all previously granted housing accommodations. As a result, the approved housing accommodation will be applicable as long as the student resides within an on-campus residence hall. Students who wish to update their disability housing accommodations will need to re-engage with their disability specialist directly.

Department of Resident Life staff will contact all students via email who have an approved housing accommodation to determine the following:

  • Do you wish to live within a residence hall for the next academic year?
  • Will you continue using the approved accommodation next academic year?
  • Do you want to remain in the exact same residence hall and room next academic year or relocate to a new assignment that incorporates the approved accommodations?

Please note: Failure to respond and engage with Department of Residence Life staff regarding the continued need for housing accommodations may impact the housing assignment process.

Updating Housing Accommodations

We acknowledge that students may need to update their approved accommodation during their time at UMD, including those related to the housing environment. If you have previously been approved for disability related housing accommodations, and need to make modifications or adjustments to your accommodated housing plan, please contact your disability specialist. They will assist you in updating your approved accommodated housing plan.

Housing Accommodations within Off-Campus/ Non-Department of Resident Life Facilities

ADS and the Department of Resident Life are unable to facilitate housing accommodations for off-campus/non-Department of Resident Life residence halls. Any University student (both graduate and undergraduate) who are not residing within a Department of Resident Life residence hall facility and wish to establish accommodations in their apartment/living environment are encouraged to speak with the management of the leasing office within the apartment complex and/or individual landlord.
