Save Environment Speech For Students

Speech on Save Environment is an important topic for students. Students can avail a well-written speech on the topic ‘save environment speech’ and learn how to write the speech that will impress the audience.

Long Speech

Good morning to one and all present here. I am glad to be given the opportunity to present a speech on Save Environment. Our environment is where we live. There must be harmony between the environment and living beings. In the present scenario, due to overpopulation, the environment is under distress. The situation is alarming as our natural environment is overexploited to meet human needs. It is because of many human activities that we are not able to maintain a healthy balance with nature.

The threat we are facing includes manmade disasters and global warming. These threats are real and have raised an alarming situation. We need to come together to save our environment. This speech on saving nature throws light on why it is needed by mankind to protect and preserve the environment. Our environment offers everything from clothing, water, food to shelter. All living beings are a part of the ecosystem. Hence, it becomes our responsibility to take care of the natural habitat.

Environmental pollution is one of the biggest issues that the modern world faces today. To meet the wants of society, we are putting too much pressure on the natural environment. This leads to damage to nature. The soil is losing its fertility, and in most places, soil pollution makes it difficult to grow crops. Even air and water pollution is the effect of mass urbanization and industrialisation. Controlling the pollution is a need of the hour, however, this still gets neglected by us. I am delivering the speech to save the earth to make you aware of what can be done by each one of us sitting here. We can make our earth a better place to live by taking simple steps like planting a tree, throwing waste in proper bins, saying no to plastic bags, etc. Rather than complaining about pollution, such small steps must be taken to make our environment sustainable.

Environmental problems are also the result of vast technological advancements in the last few years. The overuse of resources to build IT infrastructure is responsible for the loss of the natural environment. Government and international organizations must take proper steps to control pollution and save our mother earth. Environmental protection policies must be strictly enforced. Everyone has to come together to save our mother nature.

Saving our environment is much more important today than ever before. The degrading quality of earth life is what we all are familiar with. However, the early signs of the upcoming destruction are visible. The harsh weather conditions, increased carbon dioxide emissions, melting of glaciers, etc. are the major concerns that needed immediate attention. Let us all do what we can to save our environment and preserve our resources for future generations.

Short Speech

Good morning to all. Today, I am going to give a short speech on saving the environment. We are all aware of how the environment is important to us. We cannot afford to harm the environment any longer. In today’s modern world, our planet earth is affected significantly. However, if we want to live in harmony with nature, we cannot put the entire pressure on the environment. Living beings, for their survival, depend completely on the natural and manmade environment. It is impossible to live without the resources that the atmosphere provides. In such a situation, it becomes critical to save mother nature from getting over-exploited due to the increasing population.

We all know that factors like overpopulation, deforestation, etc. are responsible for environmental destruction. Small steps taken by us can go a long way. We must try to use as much public transport as possible to protect the air we breathe. We must throw garbage in the right bins so that proper disposal of waste and waste management can be done. We need to make efforts in the right direction to conserve our natural resources and habitat. Some of the ways by which we can achieve this are to use renewable energy, avoid plastic bags, plant more trees etc.

Mother nature offers so much to us. We must protect the environment and nature and be a part of sustainable development programmes.

10 Lines Speech

A heartfelt welcome to each one present here. I am here to deliver a speech on saving the environment and saving a life. It is no hidden fact that our environment is affected largely due to human activities. It is facing a threat at an alarming rate. We have over-exploited nature due to our greed. This has caused a natural imbalance. However, we can still do something and protect our environment from all the damages. We must plant more and more trees, throw garbage in the dustbins, avoid using plastic bags, etc. It cannot be denied that our natural environment is such an important part of our ecosystem. It is important to educate people about how the environment is getting damaged. Then only we can have green earth to live in.

Main Causes of Environmental Degradation

Pollution, in any form, is destructive to the environment, whether it be in the form of air, water, land, or noise.

Rapid population increase limits natural resources, resulting in environmental degradation.

Increasing population equals more need for food, clothing, and housing. More land is needed to grow food and provide housing for people. Deforestation occurs, as a result, contributing to environmental degradation.

Deforestation is also caused by using forest areas for agriculture, livestock grazing, fuelwood harvesting, and logging. When forest size decreases, deforestation contributes to global warming by releasing carbon into the atmosphere.

The exhaust gas released by industries is one of the primary sources of pollution. Lead is found in large concentrations in the environment due to a range of substances such as gasoline, paints, ceramics, and batteries.

In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the number of private vehicles. The higher the number of cars, the higher the rate of pollution that causes smog. Lower-level ozone, which is detrimental, is caused by hydrocarbons emitted by engines.

Speech on plant trees, saving mother earth is important for students as it will make them aware of how to use natural resources and how a healthy balance can be maintained between the environment and human life.

Ways to Save Environment

We need to start with the proper handling of waste materials. To do so, one must begin with recycling and proper disposal of waste items. The use of coal must be reduced and we must switch to reusable power like hydro or solar power.

This way, we can adopt a healthy and greener lifestyle. On a bigger level, we see that cities must be planned as per the available water resources. This will help in the conservation of water resources. Avoid using hot water, and make do with cold water when possible. Further, the farmers must use organic fertilizers in place of pesticides.

Further, air pollution must be reduced at all costs. Everyone must avoid taking their personal cars or bikes if possible. Try carpooling or taking public transport for the same. Do not waste electricity so as to prevent global warming.

Switch off fans and light when not in use, unplug electrical appliances as well. Try to use recycled products so no unnecessary waste is produced. Moreover, avoid the use of plastic and switch to greener alternatives. For instance, use reusable bags and containers. Do not litter the roads and prevent your loved ones from doing so too.

Most importantly, plant trees as many as you can. As the amount of carbon dioxide present in the air and the rate of deforestation happening is very disruptive. So, as the trees will enhance the air quality, we must encourage the planting of trees. Moreover, it is equally important to discourage deforestation.

Every year, we are losing our forests which carry the potential to make the air cleaner. It must begin with us and our children. Teach them from a young age to be responsible for the environment and work to save it for a better and greener future.

Earth Day Speech Tips

Captivating opening.

To capture your audience’s attention from the start, begin with a captivating opening that highlights the urgency and relevance of the environmental issues we face. Consider starting with a startling fact, a powerful quote, or a personal anecdote that connects the audience emotionally to the topic. The goal is to engage their attention and create a sense of shared responsibility.

Establishing Credibility and Connection

To establish credibility as a speaker, share your personal experiences, involvement in environmental causes, or relevant expertise. This establishes a connection with your audience and demonstrates that you are passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. By showing your authenticity, you inspire trust and make your message more compelling.

Developing a Clear Message

Craft a clear and concise message that conveys the essence of Earth Day. Your speech should emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship, sustainable practices, and the role of individuals in creating positive change. For example, “On this Earth Day, let us recognize that the fate of our planet lies in our hands. It is our responsibility to protect and preserve the Earth for future generations through conscious actions and collective efforts.”

Structuring Your Speech

To ensure coherence and impact, structure your speech into three sections: introduction, body, and conclusion.

Introduction: Revisit your attention-grabbing opening and provide a brief overview of what you will discuss. Set the tone for the speech and generate enthusiasm among your audience.

Body: Divide the body into three key themes or ideas that support your central message. Focus on areas such as environmental challenges, individual actions, and the power of collective efforts. Present compelling evidence, facts, and real-life examples that illustrate the urgency of the situation and inspire action. Highlight the interconnectedness of environmental issues with other aspects of life, such as health, economy, and social justice. Use persuasive language and rhetorical devices to engage your audience emotionally and intellectually.

Conclusion: Recapitulate your main points and reinforce the significance of Earth Day. Inspire your audience by emphasizing the positive impact individuals can make through simple changes in their daily lives. Urge them to take action, such as reducing their carbon footprint, supporting sustainable initiatives, and advocating for environmental policies. End with a call to action that motivates your listeners to be environmental stewards beyond Earth Day.

Engaging Delivery

A well-written speech needs to be delivered effectively. Pay attention to your tone, pace, and body language. Maintain eye contact with your audience and use appropriate gestures to enhance your message. Incorporate pauses to allow your words to sink in and convey the gravity of the situation. Practice your speech repeatedly to build confidence and ensure a smooth delivery that captivates your listeners.

Earth Day Speech Example #1

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we gather here to celebrate Earth Day, a day dedicated to honoring and preserving our planet. As we stand on the precipice of environmental challenges, it is crucial that we come together to reflect on our role as stewards of the Earth. This day serves as a reminder of the profound connection we share with the natural world and the responsibility we bear to protect it.

Look around you—breathe in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun, and listen to the gentle rustle of leaves. Our planet provides us with an abundance of resources, beauty, and sustenance. It is a priceless gift, one that we must cherish and safeguard for future generations.

However, the reality is that our Earth is facing unprecedented threats. Climate change is altering ecosystems, leading to extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and the loss of precious biodiversity. Pollution is poisoning our air, water, and soil, endangering not only our environment but also our health. Deforestation, overconsumption, and the depletion of natural resources further exacerbate the challenges we face.

But let me assure you, it is not too late. We have the power to make a difference, to reverse the damage, and to create a sustainable future. Each and every one of us has a role to play in this crucial mission.

We must start by recognizing the impact of our daily actions. It is not enough to simply talk about saving the planet; we must translate our words into meaningful deeds. Let us pledge to reduce our carbon footprint by conserving energy, embracing renewable sources, and adopting eco-friendly practices. Small changes in our lifestyles, such as recycling, reducing waste, and using public transportation, can have a profound impact when multiplied by millions.

Education is key. We must educate ourselves and others about the importance of environmental conservation. Knowledge empowers us to make informed choices and inspires us to take action. By teaching our children about the wonders of nature, we instill in them a deep respect and love for the Earth. Together, we can build a generation of environmental advocates who will carry the torch of conservation into the future.

We must also hold governments and corporations accountable for their actions. Advocate for sustainable policies, support initiatives that promote renewable energy, and demand responsible practices from industries. Let your voice be heard—write letters, sign petitions, and engage in peaceful activism. Together, we can drive systemic change and create a world where economic progress and environmental protection go hand in hand.

However, our efforts should not be limited to a single day. Earth Day should serve as a catalyst for long-term commitment and action. Let us embrace a sustainable mindset and integrate it into our daily lives. Let us pass on a legacy of environmental stewardship to future generations.

In closing, I urge you to see Earth Day as more than just a celebration. It is a call to action, a reminder of the urgent need to protect our planet. Let us stand united in our resolve, for the Earth knows no boundaries or borders. Together, we can create a future where the air is pure, the waters run clear, and the Earth thrives in all its natural glory.

Thank you, and Happy Earth Day!

Speech on Save The Environment

Speech on save environment – 1.

Respected Principal, Respected Vice Principal, Respected Teachers and My Fellow Students!

I am happy that today in our morning assembly we have taken this extremely vital topic, i.e. Saving the Environment for speech and discussion. And, it feels privileged that I, as the head girl of the school, have been given this opportunity of delivering a speech. Nothing excites me as much as the discussion on environment and geography; especially when it has become such a trending topic in recent times. I am sure each one of us wants to Save Environment at any cost. However, saving the environment doesn’t mean protecting only our immediate environment, but also our parks, forest reserves and wildlife sanctuaries too. There is no reason to doubt that we all owe this responsibility to make our Mother Earth; a cleaner and safer place to live in.

The all-embracing Mother Earth has bequeathed on human beings some incredibly beautiful gifts of nature, like we have rivers, mountains, forests and different natural resources that help us to survive on this planet every single day. Therefore, it’s our turn now to work towards in saving the environment from the challenges that are posing a constant threat for the existence of our Mother Earth.

Sadly, there is no part of the earth left that has not been affected by our actions so much so that our planet’s health – be it in the form of land where we survive and work on, the ozone layer, the water supply, the wildlife or our species – is being put under constant threat. The environment we live in is of course not as conducive as it used to be earlier. There are hordes of chemical industries excreting poisonous chemicals into the rivers and innumerable vehicles releasing dangerous fumes, people disposing waste in a manner which isn’t safe for our environment and ruining it.

Though the problem has aggravated to quite a great extent, but it does have a solution. It’s just that we will have to keep faith in ourselves that we can do something for our planet.

So let’s pledge to “Save our Mother Earth” in whatever ways possible for us.

There are various ways adopting which we can effectively contribute towards the cause. For instance, we can grow more and more trees in our living surroundings as well as where we find an empty piece of land. Or if you have a backyard or a piece of land at your home, then start planting trees. Plants, as we all know, absorb carbon dioxide for the process of photosynthesis and release oxygen into the environment. The estimation says that a single tree can soak up to one ton of carbon dioxide till the time it lives. No issues, if you don’t have much space, you can even keep small tubs of plants in your balcony, doorway or windows.

Secondly, use less of your personal vehicles and habituate yourself to use public transport and bicycles for short distances. Besides, do not waste energy at home or office. Switch off the device, when not in use. Then you can use fluorescent light bulbs in place of normal bulbs. You may find these bulbs expensive, but trust me they really help in bringing down our electricity bills and emit 70 percent less heat in comparison to normal bulbs.

You should also use water wisely; turn off the tap immediately after use. Don’t dump the garbage anywhere and dispose the waste in dustbin. Encourage others too in your family and at your work place to adopt these measures and save your environment from the impending doom.

This is all I have to say. Thank You!

Speech on Save Environment – 2

Respected CEO, Respected Managers, Dear Colleagues (Supervisors) and Dear Factory Staff!

As we have gathered here to celebrate the ‘World Environment day’, I’ve been given this opportunity to share the statistics in regards to environment conservation. But before that, I would share my views and facts about environment.

Our environment is a very crucial part of our lives. It is the main source of living as we get food, water, air from the environment. In fact, environment is what sustains us and where we breathe and live every moment. Thus, the quality of our life depends majorly on our environment.

In earlier days, people lived in harmony, adapting themselves to the environment; but in the modern era we are attempting to mould the environment according to our need and convenience thereby ultimately harming ourselves indirectly in the long run. Latest technological advancements in the field of science have made us more empowered, of which I think we are taking undue advantage, by utilizing the environment resources indiscriminately and giving it nothing in return, but harmful chemicals and pollution.

These results into environmental problems across the globe, creating issues such as deforestation, loss of biodiversity, air pollution, river pollution due to the inflow of poisonous chemicals, waste materials, garbage, plastics, etc., global warming and weakening of ozone layer, diminution of underground water, oil and gas reserves and natural resources such as minerals, growth of poisonous gases, pollution, smog, etc. in the air.

It is quite evident that because of our unchecked actions we have disturbed the ecological balance of our environment and hence are facing these issues. This is high time when we should take some strict actions in order to preserve our environment and make our place a better place to live in for our next generations.

Well, the first step would be to adapt our process of manufacturing and domestic product usage in harmony with the environment. More of regenerative, reusable and recyclable techniques must be used in manufacturing units, etc. Advanced countries are more liable contributors to the Global environmental problems; thus government of such countries and the UNO (United Nations Organization) must take precautionary measures at a global level. Also, long term plan and close monitoring of actions of the manufacturing units is required; youth must be educated to respect and live in harmony with environment rather than experimenting and exploiting it.

Each one of us must be mindful to protect the environment as global warming is a serious issue leading to advanced level of environmental pollution which is detrimental to health. Natural resources and forests must be preserved in order to control drought and flood. Pesticides must be used in a limited manner and the soil must be saved from contamination.

The waste of vegetables and fruits can be converted into fertilizers and shouldn’t be dumped into ponds, etc. By taking care of our small actions like saving drinking water, usage of jute, cloth, paper bags, recycling the waste products, etc. We can still save our environment from deteriorating completely.

I hope from now on, we all will implement these measures in our day-to-day lives and do every bit to protect our environment.

Speech on Save Environment – 3

Good morning respected principal, teachers and my dear friends.

Our topic for today’s assembly is ‘Save Environment’.

What is environment? I know we all will have different definition for this single word. In very simple words, I will address environment as the surroundings in which we humans or plants and animals live. Now, let’s just think that will we ever like to live in the surroundings that are bad or unhealthy? No, right..! We always want to live in the surroundings or the environment that is safe for us and others. An ideal environment is the one that does not lead to human diseases and extinction of natural resources, plants and animals.

Human beings play a vital role in the conservation of the environment. Good or bad environment depends on our activities. By our unscrupulous actions, we are contributing to the degeneration of the natural environment which in turn negatively affects human life on the planet Earth. All the human actions and activities in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem and environment. We should monitor our actions and ensure that we restrict our hazardous activities so that environment can be safeguarded.

It is our duty to protect the environment. But today our environment is under threat because of our deeds and decisions. We are responsible for pollution in the environment. Deforestation, mining, unjustified usage of machines and electricity, using several vehicles for traveling short distances etc., are responsible for pollution. Global warming, depletion of natural resources, untimely rains, cyclones, diseases and life amidst pollution and many more are the traits that show we are living in an imbalanced environment. Knowing this that we are ruining the surroundings for us as well as future generation, we should stop right away. We should control our activities that threaten our environment.

Saving environment is not a big task; it is not something that cannot be tackled. We just need to take a few steps like; save natural resources such as water, energy etc; dispose of our waste in the correct way and not litter around on roads and public places, etc; grow more trees, use public vehicles and avoid using personalized vehicles for each member, controlling industrial waste, etc. Isn’t it simple? Yes, it is. We only need to be cautious and have control on our actions and we will surely end up at least reducing the bad effects and doing our part in saving the environment.

To conclude my discussion, I will like to request you all to please do your bit and monitor the activities you perform and also educate others to safeguard their actions and protect environment. We should promote and contribute to the projects run by the government and various NGOs that focus on saving the environment. A lot of major environmental problems would disappear if we all curb the excessive use of petroleum, coal and natural gas. Let us grow more trees and create all possible ways to dispose off waste correctly. The focus should entirely shift on renewable and reusable sources of energy. These would help Save Environment from global warming.

Thank you! Keep spreading the message.

Speech on Save Environment – 4

Good morning everyone. I welcome you all to this discussion board.

Our topic for today’s discussion is ‘Save Environment’.

How important do you all think saving environment is? Saving our environment is exactly saving our lives. The environment is basically the atmosphere, and surrounding geographical area. Environment is the main source for human beings, plants and animals to live in and get food from, to eat, to play, to work, to enjoy, to walk, to breath, to hear, to drink or to overall exist. To run the life in a healthy happy way, we all need a healthy and natural environment.

We all have the responsibility to monitor the environment and day to day actions that are being done here. The ecology or environmental balance and natural cycles have become imbalanced which is very hard to bring back and give it a natural shape. Environmental can be protected at various levels: individual, organization controlled or governmental levels, to ensure sustainable development.

We all should understand that our environment consists of all the things like the living and the non-living things in it. It can be classified as Natural environment and Built environment. Natural environment is the one that has been naturally into existence since long and built environment is the one that has been made by man; the buildings, industries, etc.

Many of the human activities like cutting of trees, industrialization, technological improvements and so many are leading our environment towards danger and deterioration and is also keeping lives at risk by influencing the growth, development and survival of all organisms. Many types of environmental pollution such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, etc are diminishing the ecosystem and causing a variety of health hazards, diseases to the human beings and animals. Continuous imbalanced temperature of the Earth because of the many man-made and natural means leads to the various natural calamities and hazards causing disturbance to a great extent to the harmonious existence of human and all other living beings.

We all should be focused on our activities and watch out that none of us adds on to the reduction of the environment’s quality. We should use the energy, electricity and natural resources wisely; restrict the usage of vehicles on short distances and emphasize on using public transport instead of personalized for each member. These are just a few actions that we human beings should take to safeguard our environment.

To conclude my discussion on saving environment, I know that you all are well aware about the key aspects to be kept in mind as the cautious human who safeguards the environment. Every action of ours has a result and consequence, result might be the one that we desire for but mostly the consequences are the ones that can be classified as good and bad for our environment. We owe a responsibility to protect the environment by following those minor activities.

Thank you all for being a part and creating the spark in yourselves for protecting our mother earth, our environment.

Speech on Save Trees Save Environment

Trees are the lungs of our planet, breathing in carbon dioxide and exhaling fresh oxygen. Their importance to the environment cannot be overstated. Sadly, they are being cut down at an alarming rate, leading to serious environmental issues.

You can play a vital role in saving trees and in turn, the environment. By understanding the value of trees and acting to protect them, you can make a significant difference. It’s not just about the trees, it’s about the future of our Earth.

1-minute Speech on Save Trees Save Environment

Hello Friends,

Trees are the lungs of our planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. We, humans, do just the opposite. This perfect balance keeps our air clean and our planet healthy. But our actions are putting trees in danger, and we need to change that.

Think about a world without trees. It would be a world without birds singing, without shades to hide from the sun, and without fresh air to breathe. We need trees for so many things. Did you know that trees also help to cool down our planet? They fight against the heat that we create with our cars and factories.

A small action can make a big difference. Planting a single tree may seem like a small thing, but if we all do it, imagine how many new trees we could have! Also, we should not cut down trees unnecessarily. We must find other ways to get what we need without harming our beautiful forests.

Our actions today will decide the future of our planet. If we save trees, we save our environment, and we save ourselves. Every tree counts, and every action matters. Start today, plant a tree, and let’s create a greener world for all of us.

Remember, trees can’t speak for themselves, so it’s up to us to speak for them. So, let’s speak up, stand up, and take action. Save trees, save our environment, save our planet, and save our future. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Save Trees Save Environment

Hi there, everyone! Today, I want to talk about a very important topic – saving trees to save our environment. Let’s break this down into simple parts.

Firstly, why do we need trees? Trees are like the lungs of our planet. They breathe in harmful carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. We need oxygen to live, so you could say that trees keep us alive! Not just humans, but all animals too. Without trees, we would have a lot less fresh air to breathe.

Secondly, trees give us shade and cool our cities. Without trees, cities become “heat islands” with temperatures many degrees higher than the surrounding areas. This can make life uncomfortable and increase the use of air conditioners, which in turn use a lot of power and make the planet even hotter.

Thirdly, trees are homes for many different types of animals. Birds build nests in them, squirrels live in them, and insects eat their leaves. Without trees, these animals would lose their homes. Imagine if your house was suddenly taken away – it wouldn’t be very nice, would it?

Fourthly, trees hold soil in place with their roots. Without trees, the soil can wash away when it rains, leading to landslides and floods. This is dangerous for people living nearby and also harms the environment.

Now, you might ask, what can we do to save trees and our environment? It’s simple. Start by planting more trees. Even one tree can make a difference. Next, try to use less paper. Paper comes from trees, so the less paper we use, the more trees we can save.

Also, we can recycle. By recycling paper, cardboard, and wood, we reduce the need to cut down more trees. And finally, we can protect our forests. Forests are large areas filled with trees, and they are very important for our planet’s health. By preserving and protecting our forests, we can help to save our environment.

In conclusion, trees are very important for us and our planet. They give us oxygen, cool the cities, provide homes for animals, and stop soil from washing away. We can help the trees and our environment by planting more trees, using less paper, recycling, and protecting our forests.

Remember, every little bit helps. Even if you can only do a little to help, that little bit can make a big difference. So let’s all do our part to save trees and save our environment!

Thank you for listening. Let’s make our planet a better place together!

2-Minute Speech on World Environment Day

Good morning teachers and my dear friends. Today, I stand before you to present my World Environment Day speech. World Environment Day is observed every year on 5th June. Our environment is our home, and it is our responsibility to safeguard its health from every challenge standing against it.

Today, we hear news like the loss of biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest, the rise in global temperature, water pollution, the accumulation of plastic waste on beaches, climate change, etc. All of these challenges are the result of our careless and selfish attitude towards the environment. This planet is sustaining on a limited amount of resources and degrading and

In 2022, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The 1972 Stockholm Convention was the first major environmental summit, which was named the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. All the participating countries were encouraged to work to meet environmental challenges in all spheres of life. A total of 26 principle issues were put on the table.

After this, several environmental summits were conducted to raise awareness about global environmental conservation and how to meet sustainable development goals. Some of them were the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, the Kyoto Protocol of 1992, the Paris Peace Agreement in 2015, etc.

The objectives of World Environment Day address every issue related to our environmental concerns.

  • Environment Day aims to increase public awareness and understanding of environmental issues.
  • Encourages everyone to take sustainable steps towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
  • It encourages collaboration among countries, organizations, and individuals to work together for the common goal of environmental sustainability.
  • The day aims to empower individuals and communities to become active agents of sustainable change.

To fulfill all the objectives of World Environment Day, collective and sustainable efforts are necessary for all spheres of society. World Environment Day not only raises awareness about global environmental concerns but also reminds us of our duty to protect nature from every potential threat.

Thank you.’

Season’s greetings to all of our followers, colleagues and friends. Thank you for being on this shared journey to take action on the triple planetary crisis all year long.  #HappyHolidays pic.twitter.com/jbDoizXj6I — UN Environment Programme (@UNEP) December 24, 2023

Speech On Environment - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

Speech on environment.

The environment is made up of biotic and abiotic components. For the survival of humanity in peace and health, the environment must be kept clean. Environmental damage like the extinction of animals, global warming, and pollution etc is caused by human activity.

10 Line Speech On Environment

The existence and growth of all living organisms on earth, and especially in the daily lives of humans, depend critically on the environment.

Speech On Environment - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech

We rely on the environment for our fundamental requirements.

The relationship between the environment and all living things are maintained in a healthy natural cycle.

The well-being of the environment, which supports the survival of humans, marine life, and mammals, is significantly impacted by human societies.

The world we live in is affected by deforestation, pollution, the extinction of many species, and rising temperatures.

Uncontrolled environmental exploitation is a result of an ecological disaster.

Everyone must prioritise keeping the environment clean.

One must propagate information about the value of a clean, green environment and plant more trees.

Utilising products from recycled sources is one of the finest methods to keep our environment clean.

Oil, natural gas, coal, and other resources must not be used. Instead of using finite resources, we can employ renewable resources like wind, biomass, and sunlight.

Short Speech On Environment

Our natural surroundings are referred to as our environment; life originates there. Environment has an impact on every aspect of our lives. It determines how to live and grow and develop in the right ways. Our social lives can be good or awful depending on how well our natural environment is maintained. The atmosphere in which we live has an impact on the needs that humans have for food, water, shelter, and other necessities. Between the environment and the life of people, plants, and animals, there is a balanced natural cycle. The degradation of the natural environment, which harms life on our planet, is due primarily to human society. Every human action directly impacts modern society's entire ecosystem.

Issues like urbanization, deforestation, etc., cause environmental damage. We can make a big difference with our small actions. To conserve the air we breathe, we must make an effort to use public transportation as much as feasible. We must take the proper steps to preserve our natural resources and habitat. Using renewable energy, avoiding plastic bags, planting more trees, and other measures are a few ways we may do this. Nature has so much to offer us. We must participate in programmes for sustainable development while preserving the environment and nature.

Long Speech On Environment

All living things and the habitat in which they live make up our environment. Long-lasting sustainability is a sign of a healthy environment. Everybody's life comes from it. It sets everyone's course in life and dictates how they should develop and flourish. Our environment comprises the five elements of air, water, land, fire, and sky. We have harmed the ecosystem by cutting down the massive number of trees essential to maintaining the environmental cycle, putting up huge polluting industries, hunting and poaching animals that put them in danger, and other things.

Environmental Issues

These include rapid population expansion, decreasing natural resources, disappearing species, salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, shrinking wetlands and forests, soil erosion, and coral reef destruction. Other problems include a decline in biodiversity, the quick extinction of some significant animal species, the collapse of fisheries, an increase in air and water pollution, an increase in global temperature, a thinning of the ozone layer, and the degradation of rivers, seas, and underground resources.

The dangerous chemical emissions and hazardous waste discharge into primary water resources like the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers are two of the many adverse effects that increasing industry has on the environment. The issue of an environment that is constantly changing (in a negative way) affects all nations and all levels of government because we are all to blame for this environment's negative decline. Moreover, we are all responsible for preserving our natural environment to ensure life's continued health. Protecting the environment is of utmost importance for today's and tomorrow's generations of humans.

We still need to adapt to our surroundings, despite the profound changes brought about by science and technology regarding how we interact with the natural world. Environment is a part of human society. In an ecosystem where they are interdependent, it is essential to remember that humans are, first and foremost, animals who share a habitat with other animal species. It is up to us to protect the planet and our ecosystem so that people can live here in peace and health.

Our Contribution

The best way to preserve the environment is to educate people about the benefits of the ecosystem and the effects that environmental deterioration will have on us. A significant cause for concern is the earth's warming due to human activity. As the world grows hotter, ice melts, and water levels rise, diseases, famine, and flooding will become serious issues this century if nothing is done. Significant portions of agricultural land will be flooded.

On an individual level, we can stop using plastic straws and bags. We can carry fabric bags and other reusable bags with us while we go shopping. Using palm oil, we can use less merchandise that contributes to extensive deforestation. As large-scale farming produces massive CO2 from livestock emissions and maintenance, consuming less meat will help us leave a smaller carbon footprint. If we all decide to protect the environment, we can leave behind a healthy environment for the next generation.

Down the years, the WED has become a pathway to the restoration of the ecosystem which includes the recovery of destroyed ecosystems and preserving the ecosystems that are still in shape. Every year, the WED is hosted by a different country and has a different theme. In the year 2020, the WED was hosted by Columbia and Germany under the theme, ‘Time for Nature’.

Pakistan will be the global host country this year (2021), and the theme is ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore’ and aims at Ecosystem Restoration.

Environment Day Speech in English

Here are a few speeches you can refer to in order to help prepare yours.

Speech about Environment Day in 300 Words

As human beings, the environment we exist in plays a very important role in the well-being of every life possible on this Earth, and it is our duty to preserve and keep everything in check. Throughout the years, there have been many movements and awareness campaigns around the world that have been put forth to make people environmentally conscious. Chipko Movement, dated way back to 1970, carried out by rural villagers, particularly women, was directed towards stopping the government from cutting down trees and demolishing forests for various reasons. Van Mahotsav is yet another initiative, an annual tree-planting festival that goes on for a week in the month of July, which was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food. There were also many others like the Save Silent Valley Movement, the Jungle Bachao Andholan, Tehri Dam Movement and so on.

We, at our school, have been following the same path for the past few years. It is necessary that all of us, as inhabitants of this planet, understand the need to be aware of our surroundings and find ways to protect it in every possible way. It is not just enough for us to be aware but also let the others know that we owe a great deal of respect and concern for all that the Earth we live in is providing us with. So here we are today to hold hands in making every little difference we can, together. Let us stand together and make this world a wonderful place, not just for us but for the future generations as well. To ‘Only One Earth’ and giving more ‘Time for Nature’.

Short Speech on World Environment Day

“One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken,” said Leo Tolstoy. The relationship between human beings and the environment is important and it is necessary that they understand and work to keep it strong.

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5 th of June every year. It is celebrated to raise awareness and to take actions to conserve the environment. It was initiated in 1972 by the UN Assembly and has come a long way since. The concern for preserving the environment did not just start then. People have been taking initiatives to do whatever is possible on their own, to make life better for everyone by creating awareness about preserving nature. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” and that is exactly what all of us are here to do today. Let us join together and do our part in making our environment and our life on this planet as wondrous as it should be.

One Minute Speech on Environment Day

Nature has been painting for us infinite pictures of beauty every day, according to John Ruskin. It is just that people fail to see what nature has to offer. It is for this reason that we have occasions like the World Environment Day to remind us of what we are missing out. Planting a sapling, holding placards, shouting slogans, going on a rally – all of this is definitely something but not everything. We should be a lot more conscious of the kind of environment we are a part of and try to make it sustainable. In order to do that, it is not enough to do all of this just for a day, but make it our lifestyle. Join in, let us work together to make some real change.

Why is Environment Day celebrated?

Environment Day is celebrated every year to create awareness on problems faced by the environment due to air pollution, global warming, deforestation, wild forest fires and so on. It also helps us make a check on the kind of life we are all living that harms and destroys nature.

Why is 5th June celebrated as World Environment Day?

The UN General Assembly designated June 5 as World Environment Day for the first time in 1972, and since then, every year, June 5 is commemorated as World Environment Day all around the world.

What is the theme for Environment Day?

The theme for Environment Day changes every year. ‘Only One Earth’ was the theme in 1974 when it was first celebrated. It was ‘Time for Nature’ in 2020 and ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ is the theme for 2021.

1 Minute Speech on the Importance of the Environment In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of the importance of the environment.

Google defines the environment to be “the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.” It, in fact, comprises of both living and non-living elements within it.

Every single one of us here would surely have come across the various concerns that have been raised for the protection of the environment. However, have we ever paused to think why our environment is important and ought to be saved?

Firstly, without the environment, there would be no renewable and non-renewable resources our lives are impossible without. Secondly, the environment includes air, water, sunlight, and soil- which are crucial for our very existence. Again, our very food, be it plants or animals or cereals or pulses, will be non-existent in the absence of the environment!

The environment is thus what sustains life.

Environment Speech in English for Students

August 2, 2021 by Sandeep

Speech on Environment: World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June every year since 1947. We have to protect our environment and natural resources and keep our earth, safe, clean and green. Balance in our ecosystem improves the quality of life and makes the earth a better place to live. Pollution, natural calamities and global warming have disturbed the delicate balance in the environment. By conserving resources, reducing pollution, planting more trees and recycling wastes, we can protect our environment.

Speech on Environment 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Save Environment Speech in English, written in easy and simple words for classes 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 & 12. Students who are participating in a speech writing competition can use this environmental speech topic for their reference.

“The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.” Said by Lady Bird Johnson. I am glad that we are discussing such a vital topic in our lives. Very good morning to everyone over here, respected teachers & my fellow friends. It feels a privilege that I am given a chance to deliver my speech on the topic ‘environment.’

The environment is the source of every life. The natural environment around us in which we breathe, sleep, eat, do work is the need of every living being on this planet. We all are dependent on this environment for food, shelter, water, oxygen etc. But over the years, the balance between nature & living beings has been misbalanced & human society has played a vital role in degrading the environment. It has impacted all the life forms on the earth.

Mother earth has given us unique gifts like rivers, biodiversity, mountains, flora & fauna. It has never stopped amazing us. Sadly there is no part of this beautiful earth which has not been contaminated by human beings. Some of the prevalent environmental problems trending these days are pollution, global warming , depleting underground water, increase in sea level, overexploitation of natural resources, diminishing forests, loss of biodiversity, extinction of species, climatic misbalance, melting of polar ice, ozone layer depletion & many more like this.

We all are aware of these, which is leading us to a deteriorating situation every day. One of the major cause is the population explosion which is leading to the exploitation of natural resources. Due to the growing demand, the invention & usage of technology is increasing rapidly so as the manufacturing, mining etc. The modern technologies have affected the environment in a degree which cannot be imagined.

Now knowing that all of we have done the damage, it is our responsibility to take steps to protect the mother earth. I am sure each one of us wants to save the environment, but saving the environment is not only respecting the government policies. It will be visible when we start taking care of our immediate environment. Though the problem is aggravated to many folds, every problem does have a solution.

Let’s do a pledge today to restore the natural balance. Each one of us must plant a tree every year. We must ensure that we are recycling the plastic wastes instead of throwing them like a shopping bag, water bottles, etc. Coming to school by cycle & walking must be ensured whenever possible instead of using a car, bikes & buses.

We all must ensure to keep our surrounding neat & clean. Everything starts with us, let’s make a better tomorrow. We must remember that nothing is impossible. It’s just that we need to keep faith in ourselves & do something for our planet. Save the planet; Save a life.

Short Speech on Environment 200 Words

Below we have provided 2 minute speech on environment, suitable for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 students.

Good morning to everyone present over here. Respected teachers & my dear friends. I am happy to speak on one of my favourite topic, i.e. the Environment. The environment has always amazed me in various ways, let it the mountains, rivers, birds, animals, ocean, forests many more. This speech will go on if I discuss the bountiful things nature has gifted us. It has been quoted by Aristotle that “In all things of nature, there is something of the marvellous.”

But we the humans have adversely affected the balance between the environment & life on earth. Growing population, the growing demand & modern technologies has demarcated a wall between us & nature. The natural cycle has been disturbed. We have caused great pain to our mother earth with our activities. We have polluted the air breathe in, the water without which life is not possible, the soil which supports the life on the planet.

Humans have destroyed almost all parts of the earth. The consequences of the misbalance are not acceptable, which has resulted in havoc on earth. Global warming, climatic misbalance, rising temperature, rising sea level, extinction of species & many more. So let’s ask ourselves one question today, what have I done to save my mother earth? If you are already contributed for the cause, then pat yourself that you are already on it. It is the responsibility of all of us to do our part for our planet.

Let’s pledge to protect the environment we see around us. Minimal steps like planting a tree in a year also make a tremendous difference to the environment. Using paper bags instead of plastic will be another impacting step. Let’s incorporate those practices in our lives, which will make the earth a better place to live in. It is our responsibility to save the environment. Save the Environment, and you will Save Life and Future.

Environmental Discussions In Everyday Life

It is not enough to go over all the vocabulary above.

Yes, it’s great that you have tried to learn as many of the words and phrases in all the lists we have already covered.

But you need to be able to use these words and phrases in your everyday life.

  • Can you have a conversation right now about the environment?
  • Can you talk about environmental issues in detail?

Well, now you are going to try!

Below, I have outlined two exercises.

The first is a role play activity. In this, you will use the words and phrases we have already looked at above in a role play situation.

And in the second exercise, I have given you three simple dialogues of people talking about the environment.

Can you try both of these exercises?

It is a good idea to practice these with other friends or classmates.

FACT SHEET: Biden- Harris Administration Takes Critical Action to Protect Communities from PFAS Pollution in Drinking   Water

EPA Announces First-Ever National Standard to Address PFAS in Drinking Water, Delivers an Additional $1 Billion through President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda to Combat PFAS Pollution

President Biden believes every community has the right to clean, safe drinking water, free of pollutants that harm people’s health and wellbeing. That is why the President launched a comprehensive action plan and provided billions in funding to protect communities from toxic “forever chemicals” that are linked to a range of severe health problems, including cancers, liver and heart damage, and developmental impacts in children. Found in drinking water, soil, air, and our food supply, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) persist in the environment for long periods of time, posing a serious health threat across rural, suburban, and urban areas.

Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing the first-ever national legally enforceable drinking water standard for PFAS , which will protect 100 million people from PFAS exposure , prevent tens of thousands of serious illnesses, and save lives. This action complements the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to combatting PFAS pollution and delivering clean water.

President Biden has secured historic levels of funding to meet this new standard. Today, the Biden-Harris Administration is also announcing an additional $1 billion through President Biden’s Investing in America agenda to help every state and territory fund PFAS detection and treatment systems to meet the new standard . This funding is part of the $9 billion in dedicated funding through the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to address PFAS and other emerging contaminants in drinking water – the largest-ever investment in tackling PFAS pollution. An additional $12 billion in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law supports general drinking water investments, including PFAS treatment. The investments are part of the  Justice40 Initiative , which aims to ensure that 40 percent of the overall benefits of certain federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities.

These actions will help tackle PFAS pollution that has devastated communities like Oakdale, outside of St. Paul, Minnesota, where decades of PFAS-containing waste dumped by a chemical plant has contaminated the community’s drinking water. In this area, cancer was found to be a far more likely cause of death in children than in neighboring areas. The funding announced today will build on funding from the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is already helping communities address PFAS contamination, including a $33 million award for Tucson, Arizona to treat its PFAS-contaminated drinking water wells.

This funding also builds on President Biden’s action plan  to address PFAS pollution , safeguard public health, and advance environmental justice – all while advancing the Biden Cancer Moonshot goal of cutting the cancer death rate by at least half by 2047 and preventing cancer before it starts by protecting communities from known risks associated with PFAS exposure.

As the first-ever Safe Drinking Water Act standard for PFAS – and the first for any new contaminants since 1996 – this rule sets health safeguards and will require public water systems to monitor and reduce the levels of PFAS in our nation’s drinking water, and notify the public of any exceedances of those levels. The rule sets drinking water limits for five individual PFAS, including the most frequently found PFOA and PFOS. Because PFAS can often be found together in mixtures, EPA is also setting a limit for any combination of four PFAS, including GenX Chemicals. This standard will reduce PFAS exposure in our drinking water to the lowest levels that are feasible for effective nationwide implementation.

Today’s announcements advance President Biden’s broader commitment to deliver clean water for every American. The President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests over $50 billion to upgrade water infrastructure – the largest investment in clean water in American history. This includes a historic $15 billion to replace toxic lead pipes and protect children from brain damage, as part of President Biden’s goal of replacing every lead pipe in the country within a decade.

Recent Federal Actions to Protect Communities from PFAS

Under President Biden’s leadership, nearly two dozen federal agencies and offices have made systematic and substantive progress to safeguard public health and protect the environment from PFAS in drinking water and beyond. This work is coordinated by the White House Council on Environmental Quality, which leads the Interagency Policy Committee on PFAS. Other new actions the Biden-Harris Administration has advanced to combat PFAS pollution over the past year include:

Protecting Firefighters from PFAS : The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to protecting firefighters from the harmful effects of PFAS contained in fire suppressing agents and firefighter gear. The Department of Defense is offering PFAS blood tests to military firefighters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s U.S. Fire Administration is working to reduce PFAS exposure and promoting access to early cancer screenings and participation in the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer led by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as part of President Biden’s mission to end cancer as we know it.

Reducing PFAS in Fire Suppressants: The Department of Defense (DoD) qualified three fluorine-free foams to replace fluorinated Aqueous Film Forming Foam for shore-based firefighting activities at military installations, which the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has authorized for civilian airports. The FAA is assisting airports to transition to these new foams , and funding foam testing systems for airports that prevent environmental discharge. These changes will reduce the release of PFAS in the environment and protect the health of firefighters and local communities.

Supporting Healthcare Providers: The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released the PFAS: Information for Clinicians resource guide. This information gives clinicians up-to-date resources and information they need to help patients with questions and concerns about PFAS exposure and health effects.

Phasing Out PFAS in Food Packaging: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the completion of the voluntary market phase-out of PFAS used on paper and paperboard food packaging, eliminating the primary source of dietary exposure to PFAS . FDA can now also test for 30 PFAS in a variety of foods to further protect people from dietary PFAS exposure.

Testing for and Cleaning Up PFAS Pollution: EPA continues to take key actions to address PFAS . For example, EPA is gathering data on 29 PFAS in the nation’s drinking water systems has collaborated with DoD to develop a method to test for 40 PFAS in various media including biosolids, groundwater, and fish tissue. EPA also updated its interim PFAS disposal and destruction guidance and has released a new method to test for 30 volatile fluorine-containing compounds in air including potential products of incomplete combustion of PFAS. DoD recently identified 40 installations where interim cleanup actions to prevent further PFAS migration are underway or will start in FY2024. These actions will address PFAS in groundwater to protect public health and the environment.

Reducing PFAS in Federal Procurement: EPA and the U.S. General Services Administration announced this week that custodial contracts for federal buildings will now only use cleaning products certified to ecolabels such as EPA’s Safer Choice and certain Green Seal standards, thereby avoiding products that contain intentionally added PFAS. This shift will protect the environment, federal custodial workers, other federal employees, and those visiting government buildings.

The Biden administration on Wednesday finalized strict limits on certain so-called “forever chemicals” in drinking water that will require utilities to reduce them to the lowest level they can be reliably measured. Officials say this will reduce exposure for 100 million people and help prevent thousands of illnesses, including cancers.

The rule is the first national drinking water limit on toxic PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are widespread and long lasting in the environment.

Health advocates praised the Environmental Protection Agency for not backing away from tough limits the agency proposed last year . But water utilities took issue with the rule, saying treatment systems are expensive to install and that customers will end up paying more for water.

Water providers are entering a new era with significant additional health standards that the EPA says will make tap water safer for millions of consumers — a Biden administration priority. The agency has also proposed forcing utilities to remove dangerous lead pipes .

Utility groups warn the rules will cost tens of billions of dollars each and fall hardest on small communities with fewer resources . Legal challenges are sure to follow.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan says the rule is the most important action the EPA has ever taken on PFAS.

“The result is a comprehensive and life-changing rule, one that will improve the health and vitality of so many communities across our country,” said Regan.

PFAS chemicals are hazardous because they don’t degrade in the environment and are linked to health issues such as low birth weight and liver disease, along with certain cancers. The EPA estimates the rule will cost about $1.5 billion to implement each year, but doing so will prevent nearly 10,000 deaths over decades and significantly reduce serious illnesses.

They’ve been used in everyday products including nonstick pans, firefighting foam and waterproof clothing. Although some of the most common types are phased out in the U.S., others remain. Water providers will now be forced to remove contamination put in the environment by other industries.

“It’s that accumulation that’s the problem,” said Scott Belcher, a North Carolina State University professor who researches PFAS toxicity. “Even tiny, tiny, tiny amounts each time you take a drink of water over your lifetime is going to keep adding up, leading to the health effects.”

PFAS is a broad family of chemical substances, and the new rule sets strict limits on two common types — called PFOA and PFOS — at 4 parts per trillion. Three other types that include GenEx Chemicals that are a major problem in North Carolina are limited to 10 parts per trillion. Water providers will have to test for these PFAS chemicals and tell the public when levels are too high. Combinations of some PFAS types will be limited, too.

Regan will announce the rule in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Wednesday.

Environmental and health advocates praised the rule, but said PFAS manufacturers knew decades ago the substances were dangerous yet hid or downplayed the evidence. Limits should have come sooner, they argue.

“Reducing PFAS in our drinking water is the most cost effective way to reduce our exposure,” said Scott Faber, a food and water expert at Environmental Working Group. “It’s much more challenging to reduce other exposures such as PFAS in food or clothing or carpets.”

Over the last year, EPA has periodically released batches of utility test results for PFAS in drinking water. Roughly 16% of utilities found at least one of the two strictly limited PFAS chemicals at or above the new limits. These utilities serve tens of millions of people. The Biden administration, however, expects about 6-10% of water systems to exceed the new limits.

Water providers will generally have three years to do testing. If those test exceed the limits, they’ll have two more years to install treatment systems, according to EPA officials.

Some funds are available to help utilities. Manufacturer 3M recently agreed to pay more than $10 billion to drinking water providers to settle PFAS litigation. And the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes billions to combat the substance. But utilities say more will be needed.

For some communities, tests results were a surprise. Last June, a utility outside Philadelphia that serves nearly 9,000 people learned that one of its wells had a PFOA level of 235 parts per trillion, among the highest results in the country at the time.

“I mean, obviously, it was a shock,” said Joseph Hastings, director of the joint public works department for the Collegeville and Trappe boroughs, whose job includes solving problems presented by new regulations.

The well was quickly yanked offline, but Hastings still doesn’t know the contamination source. Several other wells were above the EPA’s new limits, but lower than those the state of Pennsylvania set earlier. Now, Hastings says installing treatment systems could be a multi-million dollar endeavor, a major expense for a small customer base.

The new regulation is “going to throw public confidence in drinking water into chaos,” said Mike McGill, president of WaterPIO, a water industry communications firm.

The American Water Works Association, an industry group, says it supports the development of PFAS limits in drinking water, but argues the EPA’s rule has big problems.

The agency underestimated its high cost, which can’t be justified for communities with low levels of PFAS, and it’ll raise customer water bills, the association said. Plus, there aren’t enough experts and workers — and supplies of filtration material are limited.

Work in some places has started. The company Veolia operates utilities serving about 2.3 million people across six eastern states and manages water systems for millions more. Veolia built PFAS treatment for small water systems that serve about 150,000 people. The company expects, however, that roughly 50 more sites will need treatment — and it’s working to scale up efforts to reduce PFAS in larger communities it serves.

Such efforts followed dramatic shifts in EPA’s health guidance for PFAS in recent years as more research into its health harms emerged. Less than a decade ago, EPA issued a health advisory that PFOA and PFOS levels combined shouldn’t exceed 70 parts per trillion. Now, the agency says no amount is safe.

Public alarm has increased, too. In Minnesota, for example, Amara’s Law aims to stop avoidable PFAS use. It’s been nearly a year since the law’s namesake, Amara Strande, died from a rare cancer her family blames on PFAS contamination by 3M near her high school in Oakdale, although a connection between PFAS and her cancer can’t be proven. Biden administration officials say communities shouldn’t suffer like Oakdale. 3M says it extends its deepest condolences to Amara’s friends and family.

Losing Amara pushed the family towards activism. They’ve testified multiple times in favor of PFAS restrictions.

“Four parts per trillion, we couldn’t ask for a better standard,” Amara’s sister Nora said. “It’s a very ambitious goal, but anything higher than that is endangering lives.”
