Top Insurance Speaking Topics for Your Upcoming Insurance Event

Posted on April 7, 2024 by Kelly Donahue Piro

Insurance Event Speaking Topics 2024

As an insurance speaker attending 30-40 events per year, I’m often asked about the top speaking topics in demand. What do audiences in the insurance sector want to hear about?

Although preferences can vary, I’d like to share the top 5 topics in 2024 that are consistently sought after across the industry, according to our experiences at Agency Performance Partners. This list is particularly useful for insurance associations, networks, carriers, and larger agencies planning training events.

Before we dive in, let’s discuss the hard market. In 2023, this was the topic – however, many people are experiencing ‘”hard market fatigue”. We are all a bit sick of hearing about it. In fact, it reminds me a bit of Covid times.

Yet, it’s important to make this clear: despite the fatigue agency leaders may feel (which I believe stems from a lack of tools and solutions), our front-line teams still need the resources to handle the second year of the market.

The first year was about learning and adapting; the second year is proving to be tougher. It’s vital for both front-line teams and leaders to find ways to manage this ongoing challenge.

We suggest not dwelling on the term “hard market” or focusing solely on topics that are specific to the second year of the hard market, to convey to attendees that they can expect fresh insights.

The reality is, that while the hard market acts as a catalyst, it’s evident from the top insurance-speaking topics that this situation is highlighting several core agency challenges that must be addressed.

Currently, we’re observing agencies in search of the tools they should have been implementing even before the onset of a hard market. Indeed, those agencies that had already adopted some of these strategies are not just surviving, but thriving.

Let’s work together to give your attendees the tools they need to thrive.

Topic #1: Road To 96% Retention

Yes! 96% retention is possible with the right strategy. We walk through the 7 key recommendations essential for driving retention, whether in a hard market or more stable times.  We encourage agencies to adopt both short-term retention strategies and long-term plans.

insurance event retention

  • Having a Cancellation Save & Recycle Process
  • WOW Customer Service Approach
  • Agency Standards (don’t write bad business)
  • Sharing & Perfecting Metrics
  • Renewal Review Calls
  • Selling On Value Not Price
  • Client Nurturing

By having your agencies focus on retention, they can overcome several challenges presented by a hard market, which is sure to be a hit at your insurance event!

Topic 2: Navigating Rate Hikes: How To Have the Rate Increase Conversation

insurance event rate increase

This is a great insurance event topic that marries the hard market but is also something that we have struggled with as insurance agents – how to defend the rate the carrier has selected. In this topic, we address the need for confidence and how to approach the question that agents are faced with daily – why did my rate go up?

It’s important to remember, it’s just a question! We walk through our perfect rate increase script, why it works, and role-play how to deliver it to your clients. This session includes downloadable resources of the presentation and script, so it can be easily shared with your agency!

Topic 3: Your Agency Process Roadmap How To Create, Roll Out & Train Your Team

Processes and procedures, while not a sexy topic, are essential. In a hard market, there is more work to do and, let’s be honest, not enough time. When agencies believe in having clear processes and procedures, it makes a difference in the team’s ability to thrive. However, many agencies find it challenging to establish these processes and don’t know where to start.

insurance event process

In this session, we’ll cover how to develop a process, implement it, and ensure it’s embraced by your team. This session includes:

  • Process template for agencies to use
  • Sample process on how to route phone calls in an agency
  • 1-page process overview
  • Process setup questions
  • Discount for the APP Process Pack of 10 Agency Processes

Topic 4: 12 Time Management Strategies For Insurance Agents

Since starting in the insurance and financial services sector at 18, it was immediately apparent that everyone claimed to be busy. That was the first thing I heard on my first day of work.

Being “busy” is not a plan, it’s a grievance. In our work with agencies, it’s evident that while everyone is busy, productivity is often lacking. I’d even argue that time management training should be a priority in high school, perhaps even over trigonometry!

Time is our most valuable resource—everyone has the same amount, and in a hard market, maximizing efficiency is more important than ever.

Here is a sample of the 12 strategies we discuss:

  • Eat the Frog
  • Slow Down to Speed Up
  • 2-Minute Rule
  • If It’s Not in the Management System, It Didn’t Happen
  • High Service Low Premium / Low Service High Premium Customers

Topic 5: Leading The Charge: How to Lead Your Team in A Hard Market

While this topic includes the concept of a hard market, it focuses on tried-and-true leadership strategies that we should be doing at all times. Leading an agency nowadays requires a shift from peacetime to wartime leadership strategies.

Now is the time every team needs a strong and passionate leader. However, the specifics of leading effectively in a hard market are rarely taught. We need to lead our teams well to avoid the risk of losing team members, which would only compound our challenges.

This session includes valuable resources such as:

  • Our Recommended Incentive Plan
  • Favorite Things Document for Team Members
  • 1:1 Meeting Templates
  • Sample Metrics to Share
  • Our 15 Leadership Strategies

While these are the hot topics that we are getting booked for weekly, I also wanted to share with you a few rising topics that are gaining momentum!

Rising Topic: How To Hold Your Team Accountable Without Fear Of People Leaving

I love this topic! Accountability can be challenging for a variety of reasons, such as fear of someone quitting, lacking clear processes and job descriptions, not tracking progress, or the intimidation of tough conversations.

Yet, accountability is key to success. Without it, an agency stagnates, and surprisingly, you might end up losing your best people.

Let’s aim for a culture of healthy accountability instead. We’ll guide you through methods for holding your teams accountable in a way that doesn’t feel like being summoned to the principal’s office.

Niche Topic: Insuring Your Best Self: Living The Life You Want (For Women’s Events)

The ladies of insurance are making moves. We are seeing more women’s events and groups forming and we are here for it! As a women-owned business, supporting women in insurance is a key topic for us.

We need to remember that many insurance team members are female. Understanding their needs can help your agency thrive. In this session, we get real personal and raw on how women can get the exact life they want with a little push in the right direction.

Talking trends: insurance hot topics under the spotlight.

February 8, 2022

For a recent Talking Trends webinar, we invited a panel of Willis Towers Watson experts to discuss some of the hot topics that North American property & casualty (P&C) insurers will face in the next few years.

Alongside the regular challenges of running a business, dealing with catastrophes and serving customers, the insurance industry has had a number of unique challenges in 2020 and 2021. These have included working remotely, planning return(s) to work, regulatory challenges, the effects of social inflation on claims, and the unanticipated changes in loss and premium patterns.

So, what do these macro socioeconomic and industry trends mean for how insurers better engage existing and new customers, become more effective in how they make and implement decisions, and ultimately unlock new sources of revenue and profitability? That was the starting point for questions posed to our panel by Americas P&C Sales and Practice Leader Katey Walker.

  • Charlie Carwin — Americas Product Leader, Capital Modeling and ERM (Enterprise Risk Management)
  • Scott Gibson — Director, focusing on Business Process Excellence
  • Yi Jing — Director, focusing on reserving and M&A
  • Michael McPhail — Director, PPCU (Product, Pricing, Claims and Underwriting)

Impact for core functional areas

Katey Walker: Efficiency and effectiveness have been big topics for insurers in 2021. Given that our expectation is that the focus on these areas will continue, what impacts do you foresee for core functional areas?

Charlie Carwin: If you look at the past trend in capital modeling, everyone got excited with all the possibilities and what they could do with models. To take the analogy of a car, companies started building their own engines, adding their own transmission and own braking systems, and perhaps deciding if they wanted air conditioning or not.

The end result was large and expensive to maintain models that were producing value — but not necessarily in line with the costs associated with them.

So, a key trend is simplification: how insurers are approaching quantification and the modeling of risk. Companies are more and more interested in off-the-shelf models, the buy-versus-build-type situation. To go back to the car analogy, they're not interested in building their car; they're more interested in driving it and extracting value that way.

Associated with that is simplification on the IT side. “The great resignation” has been an influential factor in companies’ interest in cloud solutions or other solutions that are more scalable and that allow them to reduce the reliance on owned hardware and IT teams.

Michael McPhail: Picking up on what Charlie said about off-the-shelf solutions, that’s true across the entire insurance process.

Whether it’s a policy or claims administration system, many carriers recognize the benefits of simplifying their processes. A big issue often is that they have all these old legacy systems. Trying to move completely off the legacy system can be hard. Starting afresh is a big challenge but might be justified by the benefits in some cases; however, the use of application programming interfaces (APIs) in off-the-shelf software is making the task of connecting legacy and new systems much more straightforward.

Katey Walker: Beyond simplification, the other big word we hear in tackling efficiency is automation. How is that changing the landscape?

Scott Gibson: I’d describe it as not so much changing the landscape but enabling it. So, if we go back to Charlie’s car analogy, for example, we need some sort of road — a layer that’s going to provide the ability to use the insights of a model in multiple ways.

That’s where automation comes in, particularly in light of the proliferation of different tools and data sources and the push from regulators for transparency in understanding how information is being used to affect the customer.

Automation can play a key role because, when you think of compliance risk, for example, it's not a value-added operation. But it needs to be done, and it needs to be done accurately and to a deadline. Automation is a great opportunity to streamline and provide efficiencies.

In addition, the bots can do the repetitive tasks so that users can focus on extracting the value out of those processes. And that takes us back to simplification, where instead of having long-drawn-out, complex and highly manual processes, automation cleans up the edges so that carriers can focus on the sources of added business value.

Ways of working

Katey Walker: Let’s extend these concepts of simplification and automation. How do these change what actuaries and we, as consultants, spend our time doing?

Yi Jing: From a reserving standpoint, there are more uncertainties than ever. I think companies are really looking for actuaries to provide insights about how to deal with these uncertainties and, more so, how to quantify them.

So, for example, for COVID-19, how do we measure the direct COVID-19 claims? How do we assess or reflect the indirect COVID-19 impact? And in October, we saw inflation hit a 30-year high, so how do we account for future inflation and our reserves if that's not in the historical data?

There is certainly a need to go beyond some traditional methodologies and explore new methods or tools to help address some of these challenges and questions both in the shorter and longer term.

Katey Walker: While we’re talking about insight and circling back to the idea of driving value, all of you have worked for insurers, so what are your perspectives on ways for insurers to capitalize on both?

Scott Gibson: One aspect was our project list kept growing and growing, and we could never knock enough things off of it to whittle it down. That's kind of how I moved into the business process excellence space. And I think that challenge is becoming even more dramatic because the pace of change is accelerating in the industry; the management questions are getting larger and larger, including now, for example, around climate risk.

The best part of my role now is I get to ask if a company could refine a process and smooth it over; if eight days became five days, what is the opportunity to create more value for the business?

Michael McPhail: Senior insurance executives want to know the answers to “why” questions. “Tell me why trends are happening this way. Tell me why there is adverse claims development,” and so on. These historically have been hard questions to answer.

You can do some wonderful analysis, but if you can't answer that question, it really doesn't matter. And this is where I think predictive analytics can be really useful because, oftentimes, when someone can't answer that question, they start scrambling and point to some sort of anecdotal evidence that becomes a story that may or may not be true.

With data science becoming more common, and senior executives understanding analytics better and better, they're looking for more robust answers. So, I think combining predictive analytics with communicating results clearly is a significant opportunity to add value.

Katey Walker: But can predictive analytics be overdone?

Michael McPhail: Yes, but don’t get me wrong, predictive analytics are a wonderful thing and companies benefit hugely from using them, in my opinion. The danger is becoming fixated on things being perfect — which takes way too long. I had a coworker who once told me that you can get a 95% solution at 20% of the time and cost of a perfect one, and I’ve remembered that. Models aren’t meant to be perfect; they’re meant to be useful.

Katey Walker: Pricing is always a hot topic, so could we turn for a moment specifically to the opportunities you see in this area. What are some of the key aspects for potential pricing improvements in your view?

Scott Gibson: I come at this from the perspective of how to optimize what is a big workflow for insurers.

With rate indications, for example, there tend to be discrete points in time when insurers are considering the indication information for a particular state and line of business. What would be helpful is to move to a more continuous flow of information, so that the data from underwriting, claims, reserving or wherever drives when those changes are required and which pieces of information are most important to the indication. It could also automatically bring in maybe new, relevant external and internal trend information to drive a faster and more efficient pricing process.

Michael McPhail: One area is just quickening decision making. A big part of that is looking for broad strokes rather than trying to be overly precise. If I think about a rate indication, there are a lot of components that an insurer could spend a whole lot of time on, such as picking loss trends. We can use automation to make that faster while maintaining accuracy.

Another opportunity is to be able to better incorporate information from the claims and underwriting teams on a real-time basis. If underwriters are continually making risk-based adjustments, let's say on schedule rating outside the filed rating algorithm, how can that information get back into the pricing process to potentially improve the pricing models? This is far from an isolated example, as insurers have tended to do the pricing process in silos with limited communication and sharing of information between teams.

And finally, one area that I think is more directly related to improving the actual pricing process itself is considering the impacts of pricing changes on a portfolio over many periods, rather than just the filing period. Companies often make short-term decisions based on annual profitability targets but don’t necessarily factor in that a rate increase will likely have an impact on customer behavior and could lead to premium leakage. Predictive analytics can definitely help improve portfolio management by thinking about how customer behavior is impacted over many periods.

Katey Walker: Any thoughts on how simplification, automation and analytics can enhance the reserving process?

Yi Jing: When companies are doing quarterly — or even monthly — reporting, actuarial departments can be very stretched and are faced with the long project lists that Scott mentioned earlier.

So, the opportunity, as we see it, is to better use people's time by potentially automating tasks such as selection of loss development factors. Actuaries can then spend more time doing deep-dive analysis to reveal some of the drivers of the results being seen. This might include implementing diagnostic tools to pick up trends, assess those trends and find anomalies.

Another area attracting investment in our experience is better management reporting, so that senior managers have a better understanding of what the numbers mean through the use of automated executive dashboards and suchlike.

Michael McPhail: I’d just add a comment on the overlaps in the use of predictive analytics in giving indicators for action on pricing and reserving. For example, we’ve started working with insurers to use machine learning to understand the drivers of prior year development that can be verified with claims teams for explanation to senior management.

Katey Walker: Related to management insight, visualization has been a buzzword in recent years. So where does that fit into the future role of sharing results?

Michael McPhail: No question, it’s huge. My opinion is that it should be simple to understand and see what’s trying to be communicated, e.g., the drivers of a result. If it takes five minutes to explain the visualization, that’s self-defeating.

Yi Jing: I’d echo that. The clearer you can make the information jump out of a graph related to, say, adverse development in various lines of business and frequency severity trends, the better it is.

The “T” word: Transformation

Katey Walker: A lot of what we’ve been talking about comes back to transformation. Each thing is changing what insurers do and how they do it. So where do companies start if they consider transformation as perhaps too great a challenge?

Scott Gibson: Absolutely. So in a lot of cases, the best bet is start small; look for easy wins or changes to a process. Automation is often a good solution because it doesn’t involve going back and fixing a process, not to mention it can build some momentum for further transformational activities. Later, it’s always possible to then go back and review the process itself.

Charlie Carwin: I feel there are pretty established best practices in capital modeling, but what is changing is that senior managers actually need to be able to see the results — and in a timely manner.

So when I think about visualization, for example, I think of it as just making sure that there's the marginal impact of capital from a material decision on every report. So it shouldn't be determining the decision; it shouldn't be this is what's making the decision by any means. But it should be available and should be impacted.

But for that to actually happen, you have to have capital models that are responsive. It can't take two days to run it, or you can't have a process where, for example, it takes three weeks to get an answer to a question such as: “What is the capital impact of changing the reinsurance program?”

And so, if I think about the components of transformation, one is the out-of-the-box model, as I mentioned before. Then you have automation, where some of the more manual processes are no longer necessary, where you can actually have the robots do that work and make everything much more efficient and get to the answers more quickly.

The what-if questions are always going to exist with, for example, questions about the impact of inflation and changing operational risk coming to the fore in the last couple of years. Where capital is really coming into play is that the models have to be ready to answer those questions, or at least quantify the marginal impact of capital. That's a big difference compared with even five years ago.

Katey Walker: So going back to the buy-versus-build discussion, where do you think we’re going from here?

Charlie Carwin: Historically, actuaries have liked to program; I like to program. But insurers can get a lot more value out of actually using the models than creating the models. This applies equally to larger companies that are looking for ways to reduce some of the risks, including key man risk; reduce maintenance costs; and have ready-made scalability. So, it's definitely driving buy versus build.

Michael McPhail: Away from the capital modeling side, similar arguments can be applied to open-source platforms, which have become quite popular in areas like pricing.

The problem is when someone leaves suddenly there's no one around to pick up the pieces on the coding and the governance chain is broken. That's part of why people are moving to more off-the-shelf solutions because they are starting to recognize some of the pitfalls.

Katey Walker: Does stability present the same transformational issues in reserving?

Yi Jing: Yes, I think a lot of companies are investing in a better tool to do their reserving, and I think also tightening documentation of processes for others to follow.

Let’s not forget that, particularly recently, people turnover across the industry has been high. With the pandemic, people may feel changing jobs is a little easier given that you don't have to relocate. Retaining talent is part of maintaining that stability, and insurers can engage people with more challenging, interesting and exciting work.

To that end, let the robots be robots, taking over some of the tedious and repetitive work. I think that’s important to bringing in young talent to the insurance industry.

Challenges brought about by the pandemic

Katey Walker: Obviously we’ve been living through the pandemic. How will it challenge companies’ efficiency and expense structures?

Yi Jing: As people have worked from home extensively, this has obviously posed efficiency challenges, but I’d also bring this back to my point about engaging people remotely with satisfying work.

Charlie Carwin: I’d point to the need for a different focus on different risks: deflations, whether the asset mix is correct and how premium volumes are changing — amongst other things.

Beyond these, I go back to the term I used earlier — “the great resignation.” I think we're seeing that continuing because of things like key man risk, joining up complex processes remotely, and the benefits of flexibility and agility that the pandemic has highlighted.

Linked to the heat companies are seeing in the job market, I think there’s a general push for trying to make sure that actuaries are doing the type of work that actuaries are fit to do, not necessarily the work that actuaries have to do. Automation and making processes more efficient and more focused on extracting the value can clearly contribute to that.

Scott Gibson: Echoing those comments, I’d add that we've actually seen that the companies that have already adopted automation were more resilient after the pandemic hit.

Another interesting thing is how the pandemic has affected the work/life balance. People have been home and, because they're home, they can go run an errand more easily than if they were in an office environment. So, it's creating a sort of an asynchronous working environment that is exacerbated by time differences. You can't necessarily knock on the cubicle next to you and expect the person to be able to tackle a task immediately. Robots can fill that void because they're going to work 24/7. They don't get tired.

But it’s not a case of replacing people. The majority of companies, when we’ve polled them, are actually looking to augment human productivity, not replace it.

So the pandemic has definitely been a potential accelerator for automation and transformation projects, helped by the fact that travel and other expenses have fallen significantly.

Mergers and acquisitions

Katey Walker: A perpetual hot topic is M&A. Do we see a shift in how companies are approaching buying and selling?

Yi Jing: At the beginning of the pandemic, we thought M&A activity would be low given all the uncertainties. It turned out it was, and remains, a hot market. I think that says the industry still has excess capital and sees challenges as opportunities.

Features of the market include a strong interest in specialty business. Moreover, we’re seeing many companies are putting a lot more focus on underwriting strength. The question they want to get answered is: “Is the business as good as the seller is telling them?” Another facet of transactions is companies looking for adding network platforms, such as the Liberty's recent acquisition of the State Auto.

Going forward, I think having an efficient due diligence process is very important. Clients are certainly looking for us to provide better and quicker insights.

The next big thing

Katey Walker: So, to wrap up, I’d like to ask each of you for your take on the next big thing in the coming three to five years.

Charlie Carwin: It’s already happening, but transition to the cloud. I see that growing over the next five years along with automation of the less fun, more repetitive aspects of back-office insurance work.

Scott Gibson: I’d say it’s automation plus. Right now, many companies are automating a specific process or part of a process but have seen the benefits and want to spread their automation wings further.

Michael McPhail: Going first is an advantage on this question, so I agree that simplification and automation are where things are heading.

Yi Jing: I think about what I would like, and that’s knowing, for example, that come quarter- or month-end, my full complement of reserving data will be available the next day — or perhaps more realistically, won’t take weeks or months to produce.

What we believe the webinar discussion illustrates is that insurers’ journey to the future and being best in class does require a deep understanding of all the critical elements involved from strategic to tactical, combined with the technology to make it happen.

12 Steps to a Compelling Insurance Presentation

12 Steps to a Compelling Insurance Presentation

It doesn’t matter if you’re speaking in front of a crowd of 400 or meeting over coffee with one uncertain insurance prospect. If you want to be a compelling presenter, learn how to speak well, and mold your presentation into a compelling sales pitch. There’s no room for public speaking anxiety in insurance sales. Many of the most successful agents, business professionals, and even sports personalities understand the value in being a compelling presenter.

Being calm and collected earns trust; your audience can pick up on your trepidation so let's hammer out some ways to build your confidence. Speaking clearly and with confidence isn’t the only way to be a compelling presenter. Employ some – or all – of these presentation strategies before following up on your next insurance lead and see if you notice a difference in the flow of your conversation. We're hoping it leads to your next sale!

Open strong

When you read the newspaper article or a blog, how far do you get from the start before losing attention? Chance are it happens pretty quickly. To really capture your audience’s interest, make an impact immediately. Try a stat, financial model, or impactful visuals to to help you set the tone and capture their interest from the start.

Tell a relatable story

After creating such a captivating lede, don’t you want your leads to continue following those selling points you've been working on presenting? Storytelling is a great way to keep your audience connected to your presentation. There are several good techniques to weave story throughout a presentation. For a life insurance pitch, case stories or cautionary tales work well. For property and casualty agents, it might be good to highlight minor incidents that can balloon into catastrophes. Health agents and those focusing on Final Expense might simply use the ever-increasing cost of healthcare or burial costs.

However you do it, make it personal, relatable, understandable.

Get the wheels turning

Rhetorical questions help your audience relate to your presentation. A simple, “Do you have enough money to pay off your mortgage if you were to pass away tomorrow?” or “Are your children’s education costs covered?” will get your leads thinking about the importance of insurance. No, you don’t want or need your audience to actually answer you, but you do want them to think to themselves about your statements.

Try shock value

You started with a lede to immediately capture your prospects attention, you’ve continued with storytelling to keep them interested, but if you really want to get their attention, try a tiny bit of eye-opening "shock value". Be smart with your ending.

Just as you started strongly, you want to end your presentation with your audience members feeling satisfied. Even better, you want to leave them wanting more.

Use multimedia

Don’t be fooled into thinking that storytelling is done with words and words alone. You can bring a presentation to a completely different level by incorporating visuals, like images or videos. Better yet, come prepared with video testimonials from happy clients.

The only word of caution here is to make sure your material is ready to go instantly. You can easily kill a possible new sale when your presentations don't work or there are technical difficulties.

Use takeaways

Give each of your insurance customers something to consider on your exit. Leave them with a tactile reminder of your presentation. A business card is a good start, but to stand out from the crowd of other insurance agents, you’ll need more. Hire a graphic designer to create a Life Insurance Planning handout you can share with your audience or pull together a summary of the statistics you shared.

The point is to make it clear and concise. The most important parts of your takeaway should focus on 1) supporting what you presented in clearly understandable visuals and stats and 2) your call to action (CTA) or how and where you can be reached for follow-up questions or to discuss the options further.

Make time for a Q/A session

Before you ask for a sale, ask for questions from your audience about your presentation. Not only can you clear up any confusion, but you can use the questions to update your next presentation.

Here’s the thing about Q&As: make sure you’re prepared with answers. Stumbling, mumbling, and bumbling will take away from your well-presented pitch.

Adapt to your audience

You’d sell life insurance differently to a 20-year-old than you would an almost retiree. Make sure your sales pitch reflects the audience you’re speaking to. Yes, you’ll be sharing the same information to all audiences, but you’ll speak to different needs and values.

You also need to find a way to individualize it. Adapting a presentation changes your sales strategy. Individualizing it makes the entire about your audience. If you’re speaking to an employer group of mental health clinicians, say, “You teach your clients the importance of self care. Put that lesson into practice by investing in life insurance to protect your family.” When meeting with an individual with young children, point out how life insurance can fund their college savings in the worst-case scenario.

If you have 60 minutes for your presentation, only use 45. By presenting all the information about your life insurance policies in a clear and timely manner, you’re positioning yourself as an expert. Also, by speaking less, you’ll allow more time for questions...and more time to ask them for a close.

Take a breath

Want to know to ruin a presentation? Rush through your message speaking as quickly as possible without taking a breath for a pause. If you don’t ruin it by losing the interest of your audience, you surely will mess it up when you pass out from a lack of oxygen.

Take a breath in between sentences. You’ll sound more professional, and it will give your leads time to truly take in your pitch.

If you really want to be a compelling presenter, you’ll practice...and practice some more. There’s no need to memorize your presentation. Chances are a memorized speech will make you sound like a robot.

Which strategy do you think is the most important? Are there any other strategies you’d add to our list? Comment below.

Are looking for insurance presentation strategies to maximize your efforts  selling insurance ?

Are you all out of insurance presentation ideas and looking for a fresh look?

If so, you’ve found the right article!

Today, I discuss insurance presentations and  life insurance  presentation ideas that can help new and experienced agents revitalize their sales efforts.

Also, I examine the 3 main insurance sales pitch examples to identify which strategy best suites your personality.

Then we’ll have a look at how to tailor your insurance presentation to match your prospect’s needs.

You’ll also learn about the craft of asking “disturbing questions.”

My goal is for you to find an insurance presentation strategy that helps you close more business, regardless if you’re an experienced pro or thinking about  getting your insurance license !

Let’s begin!

NOTE : Are you an aspiring or new insurance agent looking for more insight on how the insurance sales industry works? Check out my  free New Insurance Agent Resource Guide  to help answer many of your questions (as well as ones you didn’t know you had!).

Insurance Presentation Styles

  • Top 3 Methods

Best For You?

In case you don’t know, I own and operate a  national insurance agency  where I teach agents to become top producers.

In my group training and 1-on-1 coaching calls, I spend ample time teaching sales strategies to improve their insurance presentation closing percentage.

However, a lot of the success in insurance sales comes in how you connect with your prospects.

Sure, it’s important to say (and not say) certain words and phrases in your insurance sales presentation.

But, the longer I’m in this business, the more I realize it’s selling YOURSELF that most influences clients to buy.

I say all this because your ability to sell yourself is a bit different than rehearsing the right phrase or word.

Old Vs. New Presentation Strategy

One of the biggest issues I had coming into sales was my mindset.

You may well have had this mental debate I had early on (or have it right now!):

Everything I’ve seen about sales is “pressure.” Therefore, I guess I’ll have to pressure prospects in my insurance presentation to buy, even if they don’t want it, right? But I’m not a jerk, and don’t want prospects despising me!

This messy mindset convolutes our abilities to sell effectively.

For some agents, they feel “selling” is bad. And Hollywood definitely exacerbates this negative mindset.

Is Selling Bad?

Hollywood projects an image of the worst type of salesperson as typical. Think Glen Gary, Glenn Ross, or The Boiler Room.

The sales reps portrayed in both movies were almost always snakes.

And, yes, there are insurance sales presentation training programs encouraging agents to conduct high-pressure sales.

But the truth?

You do NOT have to be a “snake in the grass” to successfully sell insurance.

In fact, most successful salespeople are quite the opposite!. They’re good and moral people. They care about their clients’ welfare.

Be A Problem Solver

Instead of a product pusher, these agents are problem solvers.

Thinking long-term, they work to build relationships and connection with clients, even if that means no sale is made today.

Many top insurance agents do not follow the typical cheese ball sales strategies taught to new producers. They understand there’s a better way!

And that’s to craft an insurance presentation based around your personal disposition. One that matches you, that you feel comfortable giving.

In insurance sales presentations, your sales process should reflect who you are as a person.

It should reflect your style, your beliefs, your ‘you-ness’, and the more sincere, the better.

Exuding sincerity and being yourself dramatically increases your insurance presentation results.

You’ll attract more good prospects and repel away the bad ones. You’ll sell many more policies.

Top 3 Insurance Sales Methods

Hopefully, you understand why sincerity trumps high-pressure sales.

With that said, I will share with you 3 insurance presentation examples that exhibit both high- and low-pressure pitches.

The Pump And Dump

I remember hearing about a guy in Alabama who sold insurance.

He’d start his insurance presentation by with a little small talk.

Then, he immediately transitioned to showing prices and coverage amounts, asking them to buy.

To clarify, he did this insurance presentation WITHOUT educating his clients. No attempt to differentiate the product was made.

Why was this agent successful with this strategy?

He had an authoritative mindset, much like a doctor small talks very little, instead focusing on giving you orders.

On its surface, it seems like he has no insurance presentation strategy. The agent pitches and moves on.

This insurance presentation style is your traditional high-pressure strategy.

You use lots of assumptive language. The agent does most of the talking.

There’s less education, more aggression, and more  rebuttaling .

And yes, it DOES work for some.

However, my experience is that this hard sell insurance presentation style works with less sophisticated buyers, but not for higher-income prospects.

These days, the pump and dump insurance presentation doesn’t work as well as it used to.

Why? People know they have options. They have access to information.

They know there’s always another insurance man around the corner.

All this contributes to a lesser inclination to buy from the hard-sell agent.

Charge Back Risks

There’s another problem with selling insurance that way.

Because you pressure many into buying, the risk of lapses and buyer’s remorse is MUCH higher.

I can tell you. Nothing is worse than a charge back on insurance sales you’ve made.

While all agents will have charge backs, excessive amounts can prematurely end the agent’s career.

This risk is why I don’t like this approach. Most of us take an advance on commission.

And if Mrs. Jones changes her mind at any time over the next 9 months, I now have a partial or full charge back to deal with.

No reason to put yourself in that risky position! Insurance presentation success is all about what business you KEEP, not what you sell.

The Multi-Call Presentation

I recently read John Savage’s book, “It’s Getting Easier.”

It’s a short book on his experience in selling insurance. John also authored “The Easy Sale,” another book I recommend finding and reading.

His insurance presentation strategy is to NEVER sell on the first call.

John’s first insurance presentation was not even about insurance. He’d focus on getting to know the client more, building rapport, asking a few questions.

Typically, John’s insurance presentation was over breakfast or lunch. Then, if all made sense, he schedule a second appointment at his office and present his findings to his prospect.

Why Not Sell Immediately?

Perhaps you’re asking…

“What’s the point of meeting with a person if you’re not going to try to sell them on insurance?”

On a surface it DOES seem silly. Why break up an insurance sales presentation?

The way John explained it was that he was looking to create long-term relationships over selling a one-and-done policy.

His theory proven in reality was that long-term relationships with clients meant long-term, multiple sales opportunities.

Overall, this strategy works well.

Multi- call closing  works better for some markets than others.

As your buyers get more sophisticated, you will have to do multiple insurance presentations. Same when you sell more sophisticated products.

John sold a lot of business continuity plans, buy-sell deals, estate planning, etc.

Since there are a lot of moving parts, it’s typically unfeasible to close on the first insurance presentation.

For simple products like  selling Medicare Advantage ,  selling final expense insurance , and  selling mortgage protection insurance , a multi-step insurance presentation isn’t necessary.

With those products, I believe the best thing to do is to make the prospect a  client ASAP. Meaning sell your client something on the first presentation.

It can be as simple as a grandchild policy. Or a $5 or $10 accidental plan.

Making prospects clients makes it easier to sell MORE insurance to them over the long haul.

John Savage’s point is correct.

The long-term goal of this business is to create clientele. You’ll continually sell more insurance to these people if you do a good job on the first deal.

However, it’s important to get that first deal, too!

A multi-step insurance presentation process does not make sense with a mass market product. Instead, your goal is to sell them ASAP.

The Value-Added Presentation

There is a different way to present insurance opportunities to prospects that is low-key and value-driven.

Let me tell you my annuity partner Stephen Burgess does.

It’s pretty simple. He’s created a product that helps seniors in his county get information on different types of programs available to them.

And this isn’t some fluff piece. This is a well-designed document.

For example, it shows seniors how they can save on medical care and get unbiased advocacy for Medicare-related expenses.

Stephen’s “Senior Brochure” shows how they can qualify for no-cost legal aid. If they need help and don’t know where to go, this brochure shows them how to do it.

Why This Strategy Works

On the surface, Stephen helps a lot of people with this value-added approach, even if he doesn’t make a sale.

But through this process of showing what’s in this book, he gains trust. He builds his authority. Stephen learns about their retirement, Medicare, and life insurance.

From this process, Stephen generates  annuity sales , Medicare policies, and life insurance opportunities.

Here’s the reason why this strategy works so well.

Educating your client with this strategy simultaneously establishes your expertise while uncovering information for insurance sales opportunity.

Also, most people are reciprocal in nature. If one gives, the other feels obligated to give.

That’s why Stephen uncovers insurance opportunities he wouldn’t relying on another  insurance lead  generation strategy.

Stephen completes these insurance presentations with a fact finder. And through this process of giving so much value, he gets a shot at otherwise unreachable insurance opportunities.

Duford Style

My insurance sales presentation process is a bit different than Stephen’s.

When I conduct an insurance presentation, a use a product-focused strategy, focusing on selling one insurance product exclusively.

When I sell, I ask a lot of questions. I naturally inquisitive. Why do people think the way they do?

I’m interested in people and I want to help, but generally stay on topic.

Time is something I hate wasting. I want to know if this person is a high-quality prospect or not.

With my open-ended insurance presentation strategy, I do a deep psychological dig into my prospect.

I understand what makes them tick. Further, I really connect with their emotions.

Asking open-ended questions allows me to discover why they requested the information they did.

With my product-specific insurance presentation, I reduce cross-selling opportunity.

For example, you’re so laser-focused on one particular product that you miss out on other opportunities.

I know I’ve missed out on numerous annuity sales opportunities, and probably 1,000+ Medicare Advantage sales opportunities.

But I’m OK (sort of =) with that as I also wrote enough final expense to make a good living.

Bottom line, stay away from the pump and ump strategy.

While it does work, there’s more stress involved to make it work.

Regarding the remaining options, analyze your personality. How do you naturally like to sell? Are you direct and to the point, or do you like a more fact-finding type of presentation based on providing free information?

Also, the type of product you sell will dictate the sales cycle. Final expense, Medicare, and mortgage protection are all one-call closes. Annuities and more advanced life insurance planning are multi-step call closes.

I hope you enjoyed this article on how to craft a great insurance presentation.

How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic in 5 Steps

120 presentation topic ideas, 5 presentation tips.

How to Choose a Great Presentation Topic. Be novel. Begin with the end in mind.

4. Choose an appropriate presentation style.

There are many ways to present a topic. Your personality, the topic at hand, and your audience’s personas will help you determine which style would best fit you and your audience.

Select a presentation style that will communicate the main idea clearly and have a lasting impact on your audience.

For instance, explore a freeform style presenter by Sir Ken Robinson.

5. Engage with your audience.

Work on your presentation skills to make a strong connection with your audience, get through to them and leave a mark.

Think of the presenter as the link between the topic and the audience. A strong or a weak presenter can make a difference between a presentation being a thriving success or a boring failure.

Hone your skills by engaging and interacting with your audience. Make them feel like a part of the presentation and not just spectators. 70% of marketers have found presentations with interactive content to be more effective than those without.

Here are a few ways you can make your presentation interactive:

  • Start your speech with uncommon questions to your audience. Involve them from the get-go, like ask to raise their hands if X.
  • Make eye contact to build credibility and show confidence. Don’t stare at your slides or notes. Smile occasionally and talk to the audience directly.
  • Have an active and confident body language. Don’t stand in the same place the entire time. Move around the stage.
  • Don’t be monotonous. Speak as you would to a colleague — with enthusiasm.
  • Ask close-ended questions in between to keep the audience engaged without losing time. Address them using their names to keep things interesting.
  • Share personal experiences and stories that your audience will find fascinating and relatable.
  • Practice thoroughly before you present so you’re fluent with the material and delivery.
  • Energy and excitement can be quite contagious. Make sure you exude enough to spread some to your audience.

Feeling Inspired Yet?

Now you have all the right ingredients for choosing amazing topics and a hundred ideas to drive inspiration from. So, go ahead and start cooking presentations that will blow your audience away.

Don’t forget to choose a super-relevant topic and add meaty information. Do it with excitement to make it enjoyable for you and your audience. Best of luck!

Anete Ezera November 04, 2022

If you’re looking for good topics for presentations, you’ve landed on the right page. In this article, you’ll find plenty of good presentation topics, tips on choosing the most suitable topic for you, and essential design elements to make your presentation a success.

Many factors go into an excellent presentation. You need to have confident body language and engage your audience to hold their attention. You also need eye-catching visual aids like images, data visualizations, GIFs, and others (all of which you can find in Prezi ), not to mention a great opening to grab attention and a strong closing line to stay memorable. However, the most essential aspect of your presentation is the topic. It’s the core of your presentation, so it has to be strong, insightful, attention-grabbing, and appealing to yourself and your audience in order to evolve into a successful presentation everyone will love.

How to choose a good presentation topic

There are millions of topics you could create a presentation on, but what defines a good topic? If you’re struggling to either come up with a good topic for a presentation or you can’t decide between multiple ones, here are a few questions you should ask yourself before choosing a topic.

What’s the goal of your presentation?

When you’re choosing a topic, consider the meaning behind it. Ask yourself what the purpose of talking about this topic is, and what you want to say about it. Whatever topic you choose to present, the conclusion needs to provide a takeaway or lesson you want to communicate to your audience. A meaningful goal will make your presentation more memorable.

Are you interested in the topic?

If you’re not interested in the topic, others won’t be curious either. Interest, enthusiasm, and passion enrich your presentation and are noticeable when presenting. Interest shines through and inspires others to find the topic as fascinating as you do. Think about the last time you saw someone sharing something they were passionate about – their excitement drew people in to pay closer attention to what they were saying.

When choosing a topic, you need to find it or a particular angle of it interesting for yourself. For example, perhaps you’re not a pop music enthusiast, but you’re passionate about studying cultural phenomena. In this case, you can talk about pop music’s influence on early 2000s youth culture.

Will your audience find this topic relatable?

While you have to find the topic you’re presenting interesting, you also have to think about your audience. When choosing a subject, consider your audience’s background in terms of demographics, interests, culture, and knowledge level about the topic. Think about what others will find fascinating and relevant, so they’re not bored or confused during your presentation.

Do you have prior experience or knowledge about this topic?

Personal experiences are always great to share in a presentation, providing your unique perspective for anyone listening. While you can easily prepare your presentation based on a quick Google search, it won’t make the same lasting impact on your audience. Choose a topic you have some prior knowledge about, or have an interesting opinion you can share with others. It’ll make your presentation more engaging and memorable.

How to create a good presentation

If you know what you want to present on, it’s time to create an impactful presentation that grabs everyone’s attention. Presentation design plays a crucial role in how your presentation is received and remembered. To stand out and leave a memorable impact on your audience, create a Prezi presentation. Instead of a linear, slide-based presentation, offer an engaging and dynamic storytelling experience to your audience. Breathe life into your presentation with motion, zoom, and spatial relationships. When creating your presentation, consider the following three essential elements:

Visuals play a significant part in presentation design. They evoke emotions, make a memorable impact, and give more context to the story. Not to mention, 65% of people are visual learners , so visual aids are helpful when explaining a complex topic.

In your presentation, include different types of visuals, such as images, videos, GIFs, and stickers, all of which you can find in Prezi’s content library. When selecting your visuals, consider what’s relevant and brings additional value to the story. Only add what’s meaningful and necessary. A video or image at the right place and time will enrich the viewing experience and make your presentation more memorable.

The layout of your presentation is the structure of your story. It’ll help you introduce the topic, intrigue your audience, and unfold the layers of your topic one by one until you disclose your main arguments and summarize the presentation. A good presentation layout has a hierarchical, chronological, or logical flow that leads the viewer from start to finish.

If you’re creating a Prezi presentation, you can create a dynamic storytelling experience by experimenting with your layout. Instead of going from slide to slide, you can zoom in and out of topics and experiment with different shapes, animations, and effects that draw the viewer into your story world. Here’s an example of a Prezi presentation with a great storytelling layout:

Author: Lydia Antonatos

Data visualizations can elevate your presentation from being a good one to a great one. By providing data behind your arguments, you’ll appear more trustworthy and confident in your audience’s eyes.

Add charts, graphs, interactive maps, and more to your presentations with Prezi Design. You can choose from a wide selection of charts and maps to illustrate your data. With interactive elements, you’ll be able to engage your audience and make a memorable impact.

Engaging visuals, a well-structured layout, and relevant data visualizations will provide a great starting base to create a memorable presentation. Discover other tips and tricks that make your presentation effective and capture people’s attention.

Choosing a topic for a presentation isn’t easy. When selecting a topic, think about the goal of your presentation, your interest and knowledge about the topic, and whether or not your audience will find it relevant and interesting for them. Also, get inspired by other topics that’ll help you figure out what you want to talk about. Lastly, when creating your presentation, consider the impact of visuals, layout, and data visualizations. To simplify the creation process, follow the step-by-step process of making a presentation with helpful tips and resources.

35 insurance blog topics – A complete list of insurance blog ideas

35 insurance blog topics – A complete list of insurance blog ideas

Are you struggling with coming up with ideas for your insurance blog? Bookmark this page.

Insurance agents feeling writer's block cloud their mind, cramping your creativity, can look through these 35 blogging ideas and topics for their insurance agency blog.

#1 Introductory video

Present your readers with an introductory video explaining what they can expect to find in your blog. List the topics you cover and how often your audience can expect fresh content on your site.

Finish your video by presenting a call-to-action (CTA) offering your services.

Keep the intro video short; less than 45-seconds is ideal. Any longer than this, and you'll start losing attention.

Make your intro catchy, and ask an open-ended question to your viewers to get them thinking. Your blog provides a resource of answers to questions they have regarding your insurance products.

#2 Bite-size info clips

Blogs don't always need to be in a written format to be effective. Your blog aims to entice your readers to take action on using your products and services.

Your reader, or viewer, wants to know if your company provides a service they can trust. They also need to know you offer what they're looking for in your products and services.

Bite-size information clips should feature short explanations of complex topics in a concise language your audience can understand.

Avoid using technical jargon, and keep your clips under three minutes in length. Any longer, and you're going into vlogging format.

Bite-size clips are great for introducing up-coming blog topics. Use them as promotional tools on your social media channels to create interest in your company, services, products, and blog.

#3 How-to guides

A "How To" guide focuses on providing your readers with useful and practical tools and tips they can implement in their lives. One of the key objectives of your blog is to provide value to your audience.

By providing a steady stream of informative and helpful content to your readers, you start to earn a reputation as the go-to insurance business.

How-to blogs come in step-by-step formats or listicles like this pot, creating impactful points that drive home value, building rapport.

#4 Industry deadlines

Your industry has deadlines that matter to your clients and your business.

For example, if you're selling life insurance, model a few posts around important events in a person's life where they would need to investigate life insurance or adjust their portfolio.

Provide advice on how life events like marriage and retirement influence insurance decisions.

#5 Local business reviews

If you're a local-based insurance firm, reach out to other financial firms and businesses in your community. Include reviews and round-ups of the services they offer, making recommendations on outstanding companies and employees.

By running these posts, you create a useful resource for prospects in your area. You also create a network between other financial services firms you review, boosting their business exposure.

As a result, they're going to do the same for you and your site, sending you referrals. It's a mutually beneficial strategy where everyone wins.

#6 Helpful lifestyle insurance tips

Make sure you offer blogs on topics surrounding your insurance product range. Include all your policies and plans for things people might need in their life.

Whether you're selling life insurance, home insurance, theft insurance, fire insurance – make sure you include informational articles on all your products and how they can benefit your prospect's life.

#7 Ask the audience

If you're running out of ideas for your blog – why not ask your audience for ideas? One of the oldest strategies in selling is asking your prospects for information. They'll tell you what you need to hear, and you can adjust your pitch to accommodate their needs.

It's the same with blogging; put out a blog asking for input from your readers. Let them reach out to you with a range of topics they would like an expert to discuss. Most people will jump at the chance to get free advice from an expert.

However, you might need to create an incentive. Try giving away a $10 Amazon gift card to drive engagement with the idea. Creating polls on social media channels like Facebook and Twitter are excellent strategies for getting a wealth of content ideas from your audience.

#8 Interview your clients

If you have outgoing and extroverted clients, ask them if you can interview them for your blog. If they agree, see if you can record the interview and add it to your blog as a vlog edition. Remember to transcribe the video for anyone that wants to read.

Interviewing your clients gives prospects social proof of your services. It gives them a real-world example of how you helped people like them, solving their problems. It's an exceptionally powerful selling tool.

#9 Podcasts

Podcasting is the modern version of talk radio. Including podcasts with your colleagues or leading experts in insurance helps to create more buzz around your business. Create short 40-minute to hour-long podcasts, and publish them to your blog with a brief recap of the episode.

Your podcast builds your reputation and credibility while creating engaging content. Podcasts allow you to cover a wide range of topics, moving dynamically with the conversation as it unfolds.

#10 Infographic posts

Infographics are image-rich pieces of content that draw attention. A good infographic acts as a visual aid, explaining complex processes using statistics, charts, graphs, and other visual tools.

You can use infographics to unpack various insurance topics, presenting your readers with bite-sized chunks of information that are easy to digest. Infographics offer a change to your blog format, allowing you to keep things fresh while presenting valuable content to your readers.

#11 Public holidays

The American calendar year features 14 federal holidays, from Martin Luther King Jr. Day to New Year's Day. Your community and staff might not celebrate all of them. However, a few can tie into your insurance strategy, such as the 4th of July.

The 4th would present you an excellent opportunity to post about fireworks safety and homeowners fire insurance. Using these opportunities keeps your blog relevant, ensuring it never has a dated feel.

#12 Celebratory events and holidays

Like federal holidays., special events and occasions are also worth writing about in your blog. Some of the events creating useful blogging opportunities include the following.

  • Car Appreciation Day – Topics: Cars, car insurance
  • Small Business Saturday – Topics: Business challenges, business insurance
  • Spring Break – Topics: Safety, legal, travel insurance, identity theft insurance
  • Summer Vacation – Topics: Safety, travel insurance
  • Black Friday – Topics: Safety, consumer spending, financial and credit insurance
  • Christmas and the festive season – Topics: Home safety, home insurance
  • Tax season – Topics: Stress, life insurance

There are dozens of "Official" celebratory days throughout the year, giving you a stream of useful content ideas relating to the insurance industry.

#13 Search keywords using content tools

The internet is a collection of trillions of pieces of content, and chares re there are billion od pages on insurance topics. You can rehash through trending topics that your prospects are viewing online.

Using a content tool like BuzzSumo helps you discover trending topics and pick out recent posts. Model your blogs after the original content, but put your unique twist on it to make it yours.

#14 Promote virtual conferences and events

2020 saw a dramatic decrease in live events. However, there are plenty of virtual conferences going on in your industry.

It's possible to host a virtual audience using innovative communication tools. Create a live virtual event, and promote it through your blog to get insurance leads.

As your authority grows and more traffic visits your site, you can start charging event promoters to advertise on your site. You can also create income streams by giving write-ups and reviews on your favorite online courses and events.

#15 Answer insurance FAQs

Your clients have questions. Chances are you go through the same 20-questions onboarding all new clients. You can use your blog to create FAQs that resolve this issue.

The FAQ serves to inform your client of basic answers to questions they might need. It also helps to save you time during your consultancy process, removing the need to answer simple questions.

#16 Trending industry topics

As an insurance broker, you need to stay on top of industry trends, technology, and events. By showing your readers you're "plugged-in" to the latest developments in your sector, you build confidence and rapport in your service offering and reputation.

Reviews news stories and write informative blogs issuing your opinion on trending topics in your industry. As an expert, people are willing to take the time to consider your thoughts on the matter.

#17 New insurance products

Use your blog to talk about launching new products and services on your site. You can use it as another format to provide feedback on user-experiences and recommendations.

Blogs are a fantastic promotional and prospecting tool and a crucial part of any marketing or email campaign.

#18 Repurpose popular competitor content

If you lack inspiration for your blog, check out what your competitors are doing. Bookmark the pages of your top competitor blogs, and check on what they are doing.

They'll give you a steady stream of content ideas that are fresh and up-to-date.

However, it's important to ensure you create a personal edge on the content. If you're just copying someone else's work, your audience will realize it, and that damages your reputation.

#19 Seasonal maintenance and hazards

Home insurance and car insurance are two common products sold by insurance companies. Therefore, you can use your vlog to market to these two groups.

Create informational posts on a range of car and home topics for your readers. Keep the posts related to car insurance, such as, "How Do I Calculate MY Excess after a Car Accident?"

Using your posts to create a bridge between the topics of homes, cars, and insurance, you provide your audience with interesting information specific to your firm and service offering.

#20 Interactive informational charts

Data is the driving force behind the digital age. Today, data is the most important commodity in the world. You can use data to your advantage by integrating it into interactive posts for your blog.

For example, you could create a blog discussing the rate of coronavirus infections and how that translates to life insurance drawdowns.

That example is the perfect placement for an interactive chart. The chart provides a visual element to the post design, and it gives you plenty of marketing ideas and talking points.

#21 Lighthearted content

Sometimes, it's okay to switch things up with a lifestyle post. Review the types of extra-circular activities your clients and prospects enjoy.

Create a few posts around these topics, and publish them to keep things lighthearted on your site.

However, it's a good idea to tie in these lighthearted posts to an insurance theme. Examples of carefree content marketing for your insurance blog include the following.

  • Travel articles (Travel insurance)
  • Health tips (Life insurance)
  • Life Hacks (financial insurance, life insurance)
  • Homeowner ideas (Home insurance)
  • Entertaining news posts relevant to your location or industry

#22 Calculators, quizzes, and assessments

Your blog is a resource for your clients and prospects to find the information they need regarding insurance products. Your articles can use built-in tools like quizzes, calculators, and assessments to bring more value and engagement to your posts.

Including these features and insurance marketing tools in your content strategy allows you to see how people interact with the post and the tools. This data provides you with insights into what your readers find interesting and valuable in your articles.

#23 Press releases and company announcements

Is your company announcing a merger or a new product release? Use your blog to launch PRs, or to talk about the results and expectations from industry leaders. Eventually, you turn your site into the go-to resource for industry news.

#24 Ideas for automated work solutions

2020 saw companies closing around the world, forcing people to work from home. The result was a rapid evolution in automated work solutions, communications and collaboration tools, and remote work.

Use the opportunity to launch articles talking about systems like CRMs, and how they can improve your business. Offer your salespeople sales tips, and improve employee retention by enhancing the employee experience.

Make the articles relatable and from a perspective that shows you implementing the system. You can mention the trials and tribulations you encounter executing the solution and the benefits you received using the system.

#25 Skyscraper-style content

It might surprise you to learn that long-form content ranks best in Google. Google views long-form as the most informative resource, prioritizing long-formats over shorter versions on the same topics. These articles offer the viewer the most amount of information, resolving as many client queries as possible.

When building long-form "skyscraper" content, it's advisable to include lead generation tools involved in the content to capture prospects while they read the blog. Your lead magnet could consist of a PDF guide on a related problem facing prospects reading the long-form copy.

The lead magnet attracts people to leave their email and name in exchange for access. You add those entries into your sales funnels and email campaigns, providing you with a qualified prospect for your marketing efforts.

#26 Client pain-points

Do you know the pain-points affecting your clients? Take an hour to think about the common questions and problems you encounter during your consultations.

Write out a list of possible article topics focusing on practical solutions to these client issues.

#27 Socio-economic issues

The insurance industry has close ties to finance and to social issues. Use your blog to discuss relevant, trending socio-economic problems affecting the country and your industry.

For example, the recent pandemic and the handing out of stimulus checks left dome people with extra money.

Should they spend it, invest it, or donate it? Your blog can provide insights on a range of social-economic issues affecting the lives of your readers.

Weighing in with your opinion gives you a voice and identity in the space. In-turn, it boosts your credibility in the eyes of prospects and clients.

#28 Marketing strategy

Use your blog to talk about new marketing ideas . Your clients know you're marketing to them, and they don't mind provided you're doing a good job.

There are plenty of digital marketing and SEO topics to cover, giving your audience useful insights on how to grow their business online. Teach them how to design an email marketing campaign to attract new customers.

#29 Embed and discuss YouTube videos

YouTube is a huge platform with millions of videos on all types of insurance. Search for trending topics, and pick a video for discussion.

Most websites allow you to embed the video in your post, allowing your reader to view it without leaving the page.

#30 Request webinar ideas

Webinars are a favorite tool for online marketers to generate new leads and convert prospects. A webinar is a long-format presentation covering a topic – like the benefits of business owners or homeowners insurance.

You can promote webinars on your blog to add more value to your clients. For instance, leaving a CTA saying that open-enrollment is free for readers of your blog incentivizes your audience to click on the CTA and register for your webinar.

#31 Support for local charities

Are there local charities in your area? Charities are always looking for two things – finance and promotion. Most of them are non-profits, and they work on others' generosity to help them provide services to others.

Make a list of local charities in your area, and drop a post into your blog reviewing each of them. Reviewing charities helps to give them more exposure, and it also shows your clients you care. Make sure you sign up for one or two of your favorite charities and donate to them.

Use these opportunities to help the organization and to create content for your blog. It might seem wrong to leverage charities like this, but if you're doing it with kindness in your heart, then it can't be wrong.

#32 Tips for managing stress

We all live in a stressful world. The pressures of managing a career, family responsibilities, and social life can end up wearing people down. Stress and anxiety are things most people must deal with in their lives.

Your blog posts can include actionable advice and tips on managing stress in your life. Mention ideas you find that work for you and topics that allow your readers to benefit.

You can mention natural and clinical stress-reduction strategies to keep your clients in a sound state of mind.

#33 Productivity ideas

Your clients are dynamic and intelligent people – that's why they buy insurance. Therefore, including ideas to boost productivity and performance at work and in your personal life can make for interesting and engaging content for your readers.

Talking about digital workflows, productivity tools, apps, and automated strategies provides your readers with plenty of insight.

If you're working with professional people, then all of them will benefit from bringing automated tools and software into their life to increase productivity, performance at work, and in personal relationships.

#34 Annual wrap-ups

Annual wrap-ups are a great way to end off the year. People enjoy reading lighthearted wraps over serious ones.

With the coronavirus making everyone on edge this year, putting a positive spin on your recap gives people a chance to take a mental break.

Include interesting facts and events in your industry and the country. Sure, 2020 might not have much good news to celebrate, but you'll probably find a few gems in among the lumps of coal.

#35 Reading lists

We all encounter books that change the way we think about our profession and our life. Creating posts about books that your clients might find interesting is fantastic content.

Keep the recommended reading list to professional interests surrounding finance, insurance, personal development, and geopolitics.

A reading list allows your client to use your site as a resource to expand their knowledge base.

If they discover a good book or article that makes them think, it's going to keep you in their thoughts. It's an excellent way to position yourself as an authority on a topic, ensuring that your readers come to you when they need advice.

30 Insurance Blog Topics (Ideas to Generate Leads)

Finding new insurance blog topics is challenging but critical for your insurance blog to bring in leads. Use this list of insurance blog topics to grow your blog.

interesting insurance topics for presentation

May 24, 2020 By Allison Murphy

“The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”

-Mark Twain

Most of us are familiar with Mark Twain and his writings.

Something tells me that if he was living today, he’d be a unicorn at blogging and content marketing.

So, let’s keep his wisdom in mind today as we talk about some insurance blog topics.

In reality, these are great blog content ideas for businesses of many kinds but these ideas are all great for insurance agencies specifically.

Let’s consider one more quote before we get started, this time it comes from one of our insurance friends who is more relevant to today’s marketing landscape for insurance agents than Mark Twain.

I am an independent insurance agent in the Kansas City Metro area. Most people associate insurance as a boring topic. For the average person it is. I’ve been able to take insurance topics and make them fun and educating.

Short Informational Videos

Video content is surpassing written content in terms of what is getting viewed most online.

Consumers love watching short informational videos as opposed to reading articles because it is more entertaining and easier for them to consume the information.

Consider setting up a YouTube channel and posting short informational videos that teach consumers about insurance and the options they have. You can also embed these videos onto your blog and share them on your social channels.

Here is an example of a short informational video about insurance blogging!

Intro Video

As an insurance agent, your primary goal is to build brand trust.

Modern customers crave authenticity, so it’s important to stay transparent.

One content idea that works well for most independent agents is to create a short introduction video, featuring the business owner explaining their “elevator pitch” high lighting their unique value offering.

This way, you kill two birds with one stone: you create an authentic brand and build trust.

The last thing to remember: No one is going to buy from a brand they don’t trust.

Mission Statement, Your “Why”

Similar to an intro video, every business website should have at least one piece of content about why they started their business.

This content is best when it’s in the form of a video because it makes the experience more personal. It can also be written out in the form of a blog post or a mix of both.

This helps your audience get to know your brand and mission on a more relatable level.

If in the form of video, the user gets to see and hear you explain your business which can ultimately create more trust.

This insurance blog topics idea comes from Bri Witt at Digital Nomad Designs .

The Next Big Deadline

Your insurance agency has lots of seasonal content opportunities thanks to the ebb and flow of important deadlines that affect the insurance industry.

Open enrollment windows, tax season – you have tons of events scheduled well in advance by the government. Plan out useful content that you can prepare in advance and publish at the most appropriate time.

You can also generate useful deadline-related content for individual clients. While blog publishing is probably not the right venue for such content, a well-automated email campaign can deliver this material to the rights clients at the right time.

Reminding your clients of important due dates and times they need to take action to maintain their coverage is important.

How To Articles

“How To” articles and those that focus around tips are great choices for blog content that can help reach your target audience.

In the insurance industry, reviews, roundups, and comparisons can also help. Writing a review or a comparison about “Mutual of Omaha” life insurance would be a great insurance blog topic.

You can also do some research on what topics are trending in your industry, and focus your blog content around those. Take an authoritative approach in your blogs and make sure they’re relevant to the audience you’re looking to target to gain the most from them.

This insurance blogging tip comes from Monica Sirignano at Big Gorilla Design .

Helpful Tips

If you sell homeowners insurance then sharing helpful tips for homeowners is a great way to get in front of homeowners who may need a homeowners insurance policy.

For auto insurance , share tips about car maintenance and other auto-related information. For Life insurance, you can share tips about saving for college, planning for retirement, and how to plan and prepare for unexpected life events.

It doesn’t matter what type of insurance you sell. Think about your target audience and the things they are going to insure:

With these things in mind, start sharing helpful tips for these audiences. Informing and helping people through content is one of the best ways to engage and build trust to convert more leads .

Local Reviews

Independent agencies and agents targeting a local region can reach, engage, and connect with local prospects by reviewing other local businesses.

A restaurant review, for example, can bring in traffic to your website although it may not be high converting traffic it is still targeted if it is local.

This means that the person reading the review is likely to remember your agency at some point in the future when they aren’t searching for restaurant reviews but rather a local insurance agent.

Each blog post must target relevant local keywords in my area to draw traffic. One tip is to include the physical addresses or better yet, link to other local businesses in your niche.

This sends a strong signal to Google that your page focuses in a geographical area. The next step is to internally link similar pages to further boost local niche relevancy. Just by doing this will help you rise on top of your competitors who aren’t SEO savvy.

Reviewing other local businesses is a great way to encourage more online reviews for your agency .

This insurance blog topic idea comes from Jimmy Chan at Pixelicious .

Ask Customers

Your customers are the best source to ask, “what would you like to read about on my blog”.

It sounds so simple but literally asking your customers in an email, on social media , or through a survey can lead to some great blog content ideas for your business.

You could provide a small incentive like a $10 Amazon gift card giveaway in order to solicit feedback around which topics are most important to your audience.

Try creating a Facebook Poll to ask your followers, sending out an email, or posting a survey form on your website to ask your customers what they’d like to read on your blog.

The best way to start writing about a particular blog or infographic idea is with research. Ask yourself and your peers what questions or problems that the business you are looking to target is trying to solve.

Once you have answered that question, the next step is to identify correlating statistics that can illustrate your point.

People understand pictures and numbers better than they do words. Putting the two together will show that you have the wherewithal to provide value to your audience.

Once you have identified the key factors in relation to your blog idea, start writing and designing.

This insurance blog tip comes from Steven Azizi at Miracle Mile Law Group.

Infographics

It is important when creating an infographic that the content topic is interesting.

This seems pretty obvious, but it cannot be underscored enough that the infographic will fail to engage users unless the topic is interesting to the website readership.

I like to scope out infographics that my competitors are using to see what good ideas resonate with me. Then I begin to frame the idea of my infographic while trying to keep my website audience in mind.

When we begin designing the infographic I am careful to instruct the designer to graphically ‘show’ the audience, rather than merely use words that ‘tell’ the audience with too many blocks of text.

I advise the graphic designer to keep the design simple and break up the pieces of the story into segments that can be easily digested at a glance.

This is how you create a winning infographic on any insurance blog topic.

This insurance blog content idea comes from David Reischer at LegalAdvice.com .

Interview Clients

If you have a really great client relationship with one of your policyholders, then you should consider interviewing the client.

Having a conversation with a client and discussing insurance and the various services that you’ve provided to them is a fantastic way to show potential policyholders exactly how your agency will help them.

Your prospects would much rather hear from one of your clients about how you help, rather than hear you directly promote your services.

Describe how the client was struggling with a specific issue and how the company’s services helped the client solve it. Also, explain what were the end results and how much benefit (Try to put a dollar value) did the client achieve after using the insurance agent’s services.

Interviewing a client and sharing their success story on your blog is a fantastic way to improve your online reputation .

Behind the Scenes (A day in the life of)

Get personal with your clients by showing them around your office or sharing pictures of you working throughout the day.

This type of content is best suited to attract an audience who have heard about your company but don’t exactly know what you do. It serves as a great way to connect with customers and help them understand how your company functions.

When people see that you and your business are real it will immediately build trust with them.

Federal Holidays

This year includes 14 federal holidays, although your community and agency might not observe all of them. But whether or not you’re going to work, each holiday gives you an opportunity to publish themed content.

There are plenty of logical links between specific holidays and insurance and safety topics. The Fourth of July, for example, is the perfect time to schedule a blog post on the subject of fireworks safety.

Other Holidays and Events

Just like federal holidays, there are many holidays worth considering for writing about on your blog.

These other holidays could be things like:

  • April Fools Day
  • Ground hog day
  • Small Business Saturday
  • Spring Break
  • Summer Vacation
  • Super Bowl Sunday

Since these holidays and events will be trending on those days, you can tap into the conversation.

Searcher Intent

Rather than drafting your content around unique events like April Fools Day, focus on content ideas that match the searcher intent instead.

There is already an overwhelming plethora of useful and useless content on the internet, which means your content needs to be unique, interesting, and engaging.

You can still write your blog articles around a certain keyword, but try to match the searcher intent around that keyword. Serious customers aren’t looking for another “Why You Need Life Insurance” article; instead, they’re searching for an article on the “How to choose a term life insurance policy.”

Take some time to do some research and put yourself in the shoes of your customer, try to figure out what answers they’re searching for.

This insurance blog idea comes from Niles Koenigsberg at FiG Advertising

Promote Local Events

In addition to reviewing other local businesses to attract local traffic, you can promote local events.

If you have local keywords that you’d like to rank for, then writing blog posts are always a good idea because Google can crawl text in these posts versus an infographic or video.

Creating posts about how to prepare for holidays locally whether in terms of participating in community events or marketing your business can be excellent ways to gain local attention through Google search.

For example, if your community goes all out for Small Business Week or Small Business Saturday, you can write a post for your business blog on what your town is doing, how your business will be participating, and where people can celebrate.

If you write your post well and thoroughly, and include relevant keywords like your town name, the holiday, and other pertinent information, you’ll have a shot at ranking on Google, especially if you do your research and see what other posts that rank for that keyword are doing well that you can do better.

Again, promoting a local event is a great way to get in front of your local audience and stay top of mind. Your goal isn’t to sell your services in this content, just to get attention, remain top of mind, and help your audience by informing them of the local event.

Doing this will help you reach more of your local audience, stay top of mind, build trust, and when the timing is right to convert more leads.

This insurance blog topic idea was brought to us by Nicolas from Fundera .

Trending Topics

Although you want to be careful when it comes to political events, because talking politics in your marketing may not be ideal, there are many trending topics that can drive traffic to your blog and start conversations.

Here are a few categories that are usually safe to discuss and often trend in the media:

  • Celebrity stories
  • Upcoming Movies
  • Athletes, Sports Teams, and Events
  • Breaking news that is interesting but not too “serious”
  • Breaking financial news
  • Breaking Healthcare news

Celebrities Using Insurance

Alex Trebek promotes life insurance, you could write a blog post talking about Alex Trebek and life insurance and it would get traffic because that alone is a topic.

Seriously, each month hundreds of people search “alex trebek life insurance” and other similar phrases.

So, for this celebrity topic idea, here is how it works.

Capitalize on events where a high profile personality uses or is associated with a product you carry. If any celebrity story comes out that mentions an insurance product or carrier, consider writing a blog post about it.

Quickly putting together a post on a viral topic like this can get a fast top ranking on Google and drive some good traffic to your website.

Answering FAQs

This is an excellent well for generating evergreen content. These answers can go well beyond your blog; the same content can do well in videos or printed materials distributed to prospects and new clients. Get the ground-level perspective by asking your agents which questions they answer most often for clients.

Pick your distribution channels for this content based on what is most effective and convenient for your clients. Frequently-asked questions are content subjects that keep on giving. You can always revisit specific topics and provide new angles and greater expertise.

Repurposed Content

Did you recently send out a mailer with some statistics on it? Or did you create an informational YouTube video? What about an email campaign that you sent out to your database that explained something important like a deadline or procedure they should be aware of?

All of these types of content can be repurposed and published on your blog.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when re-purposing content for your blog:

  • Don’t copy/paste exact duplicate content from other places online (Make it unique for your blog so that Google doesn’t penalize the post)
  • For videos, you can use tools that will write the transcript creating a draft for your blog
  • For email campaigns, since they haven’t been published online you can post these exactly as they are to your blog, in fact, I recommend posting these to your blog first and then sending out the email campaigns driving people to your site to read the full article.

Seasonal Hazards And Maintenance Tasks

As the seasons turn, your clients are presented with an ever-changing array of hazards and steps they should take to mitigate them. Seasonal blogging can make your agency more relevant and provide well-timed advice.

If your agency handles lots of life and health insurance, for instance, a timely post presenting health tips for flu season would be fitting.

If you sell homeowners insurance then you can provide a blog post sharing tips for “winterizing” your home to avoid pipes freezing etc. Or vice versa during the summertime sharing cooling tips to save on energy costs.

New Products

When changes come to the insurance industry and new policies are offered, or old policies are discontinued, blog about it.

These changes bring about a lot of Google searches where policyholders are actively searching for information and agents to help them understand these new products and policy changes.

Be the first to cover these topics and you will generate traffic and leads.

Interactive Charts

Data sells.

Given that B2B content is aimed at reaching decision makers, your business blog should be credible and provide the added value to them.

With tons of data in your pocket, you can engage the audience if tailor it to them personally: create an interactive chart where they could enter their details and get the result related to them specifically.

Sure enough, the topic and the data you’ll provide need to be relevant to their search intent. Some life insurance policyholders may want to know their life expectancy .

As you can see, using a content asset with interactive charts in it allows the reader to enter their data to get the answer to their question. This engagement garners more attention and builds more trust with the user.

Besides, consider other unconventional ways to visualize content at your blog. Maps, vox pops, flash spatial — all they drive engagement, encourage comments and shares and are great for standing out from the crowd.

This tip comes from Lesly J. Vos at Bid4Papers

Quizzes, Calculators or Assessments

Just like charting data, interactive content such as an assessment or calculator is a great way to boost conversions and increase engagement.

In fact, interactive content can generate 2x more conversions and 4-5x more pageviews than passive content, which makes it a highly effective marketing tool.

With an  assessment , your visitor can learn something useful while you collect information that you can use for subsequent targeting. By using the answers a visitor has given to formulate a personalized outcome or give access to a specific page, whitepaper, course, etc… you can provide additional value.

For life insurance agents, creating a calculator for consumers to calculate how much coverage they need is a great way to get visitors engaged and convert them into leads on your insurance website .

Fun Content

Stepping out of the insurance industry box may be appropriate if it suits your clientele.

Feel free to share or create off-beat content, like:

  • seasonal recipes
  • ideas for homeowners and families
  • lifestyle posts
  • entertaining news posts

Just make sure you understand your audience well enough to know if your clients will find it just as interesting as your insurance insights.

Remember, you want to come across as an expert advisor and someone they trust and might like to be friends with. It is a balancing act.

Social Issues (Philanthropy / Environment)

If your insurance agency is sponsoring any organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or the Red Cross, then you should blog about these efforts.

Share photos of your team out building a habitat for humanity house!

Anything that your insurance agency is doing to better society is a great thing to share on your company blog.

Skyscraper Content

Nowadays, long-form content generally ranks highest in Google. Why?

Because it fully covers the topic and best answers the user’s search query, so Google ranks it high.

When creating long-form, Skyscraper type content, always offer a free PDF download of your content to get more email subscribers and generate more leads.

Ryan Hanley from Agency Nation is a fan of using lead magnets like PDF downloads and at UpLead, they’ve used this tactic many times to great success.

For instance, content strategist Cherie Foo explained that UpLead grew their email list by 1,000+ subscribers within a week of launching a blog post and offering PDF downloads on the post.

You can play around with the placement of your Call To Action, but we find that displaying it early on in the article works the best. We use this tactic from time to time on our own blog.

Share Employee Takeaways

People forget that there often is a lot of untapped potential in their employees as a content resource. If you have employees then use them, employees have a pulse on what is going on and are often on the frontline with clients.

You can ask them to share ideas and comment on articles with their own experience, making the content pieces a lot more personal and tailored to your policyholders.

By including your team’s insights in your content you will provide more value and build more trust.

Also, be sure to use your employee email newsletter to highlight the most important content on your blog and encourage employees give your social media presence a boost.

Customer Pain Points

When writing content you need to know what your target audience’s pain points are.

If you’re targeting different audiences, you need to address different pain points. Creating personas, listing the pain points for each of them helps you in the content you need to create in order to reach them.

Often, this information is already available within organizations. To generate ideas, talk to customer support, account managers and salespeople – anyone really that’s in touch with customers.

This tip comes from Steven van Vessum at ContentKing

Press Release or Company Announcement

The next time your insurance agency sponsors a little league baseball team, donates to a community cause, or does anything that is worthy of a company announcement, is an opportunity for a blog post.

People love working with companies that give back and are successful so making announcements about community efforts, philanthropy, or even just growth and success with hiring more employees are all welcomed announcements.

Bonus: Pro Tip

All of the ideas so far can work once you get used to blogging, but early on, you’re likely to suffer from writers’ block, or create content about things that you don’t know enough about.

I recommend saving notes, email correspondence and message threads that get created in your everyday business. These will be things that you’re an expert in and will involve topics such as frequently asked questions, and customer pain points.

These are the topics that you can write passionately about, and that can educate and inform customers and co-workers. You can even use the notes as the first draft, as long as you remove personal information or trade secrets. Your next blog post might be already half written!

Although Twain didn’t use the term “content marketing”, he was one of the greatest content marketers of his time and his wisdom remains relevant beyond technology modern day lingo.

I believe that the same thing applies when it comes to content: the difference between good content and well-optimized content is the difference between being buried on Google’s second page and ranking in top 3 positions or having 0 followers versus multiple fans sharing your content.

Content should educate and connect with your ideal audience.

You can do this by talking about current industry news, share the stories of your clients, answer common questions about your product/service, share resources that they’d find useful, and use your content to overcome internal objections.

We read and take in so much content, that above all you must be memorable.

The most impactful content taps into what their ideal client is thinking and feeling and reflects it back, while also educating them on the problem that’s frustrating them.

You position yourself as an authority and it builds connection and trust while nurturing the relationship.

In closing, the best advice I have for your content creation efforts is to be authentic. Share your knowledge and your personality with the world to build an authentic brand that people can trust.

And when the writer’s block sets in, just bookmark this list of insurance blog topics and ideas for businesses to get things started.
