Medical physics

Primarily, medical physics seeks to develop efficient and safe diagnosis and treatment methods for human diseases with highest quality assurance protocols. In Finland, most of medical physicists have the licensed profession of a hospital physicist. Hospital physicist is a necessary expert in medical usage of radiation as required in the statute of the medical usage of radiation. Hospital physicist can also act in radiation protection expert or radiation protection officer professions in the healthcare sector.

It is possible to complete the education of a hospital (medical) physicist profession as a postgraduate professional education at the Faculty of Science. The education consists of

  • theoretical postgraduate education related to the field and a degree of Licentiate of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy,
  • practical training in hospitals,
  • theoretical studies of a radiation safety expert and
  • national hospital (medical) physicist examination.

The theoretical education is provided according to the curricula of the Master’s programme in Materials Research and Doctoral programme in Materials Research and Nanoscience.

The national education committee for hospital physicists coordinating the specialization of hospital physicists is responsible for the education harmonization.

EFOMP’s European School for Medical Physics Experts

Dear colleagues,

EFOMP’s European School for Medical Physics Experts (ESMPE) is our starting point for enhancing education and training programmes for Medical Physics in Europe; this objective is bolstered by two other important pillars, namely the biennial European Congress of Medical Physics and EFOMP’s official journal, the European Journal of Medical Physics (Physica Medica).

The main topics of ESMPE School editions are related to ionising and non-ionising radiation applied in medicine (Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, MRI) as well as specific topics such as Statistics , Artificial Intelligence and Informatics.

ESMPE organizes medical physics education and training events specifically targeted to Medical Physicists who are already Medical Physics Experts or would like to achieve Medical Physics Expert (MPE) status. The schools are accredited by an independent body (the European Board of Accreditation for Medical Physics) to ensure that they are at the required educational level, i.e., Level 8 of the European Qualifications Framework.

Thanks to a limited number of participants the interaction between lecturers and attendees is assured, guaranteeing the high quality of the courses.

Moreover, a distinctive tract of the school is to provide subsidized fees for a certain number of participants coming from low-income European countries.

The prominent Medical Physicists within the ESMPE Board ensure the high quality of the programmes and the future evolution of education and training in Europe.

The Board is open to evaluate all proposals for future Schools coming from EFOMP National Member Organisations or from individual members of the European Community of Medical Physics.

EFOMP school chairs (2013-2017): Carmel Caruana, Marco Brambilla, Alberto Torresin

The Doctoral Schools of the GS Physics PhD program supervise the PhD students throughout their thesis, by appointing referents who interact with them regularly.

EDOM : During the course of their thesis, PhD students have access to an individual monitoring committee, an advisory body that ensures, through annual meetings with the student, that their doctoral training is going well. This committee monitors the progress of the PhD student in his/her ability to present his/her research work. It helps the PhD student to take stock of the progress of his or her doctoral training, as well as the state of preparation for his or her future career.

AAIF : The AAIF doctoral school organizes a post-thesis training during which PhD students can meet the presidents of the A&A sections of the CNRS, CNU and CNAP, meet company managers from the aerospace sector, and work on writing CVs and application letters under the supervision of recruitment professionals. In 2021, the AAIF ED has also established a partnership with PhDTalent to promote the skills of these PhD students on social networks (LinkedIn, Twitter), to post job offers selected from keywords adapted to their skills and expertise.

  • EDPIF : For each PhD student, an individual monitoring committee is set up, independent of the thesis director. A meeting concerning the progress of the thesis and the future is organized with the monitoring committee, the PhD student and the supervisors at the end of each year of the thesis (at least). During this meeting, the monitoring committee must also discuss with the supervisor(s) in the absence of the PhD student and conversely with the PhD student without the supervisor(s). At the end of this meeting, the follow-up committee sends its report on the meeting to the ED and possibly makes recommendations on the continuation of the thesis and on re-registration. Additional meetings of the follow-up committee are organized for any thesis presenting specific problems, whatever their nature, or extending, as an exception, over all or part of a fourth year. For more details see : https://www.edpif.org/fr/parcours/suivi.php
  • PHENIICS : Each PhD student is supervised by a person who follows him/her throughout the thesis. The progress of the thesis work and the training courses followed are reviewed each year at the time of registration. A sponsorship system is also in place in most laboratories. In case of problems revealed either during the annual interview or during the course of the thesis thanks to the sponsorship system, a supervisory committee is set up to understand the nature of the problems and to propose solutions.

PhD students enrolled in the Doctoral Schools of the GS Physics program find employment in both the academic and private sectors.

Approximately half of our PhDs eventually find a job in the field of research in universities or large research organizations in France (CNRS, CEA, ONERA, etc...) or abroad. Industry is also a very important outlet. Most of our PhDs work in technical or technological fields that allow them to make the most of the skills they have acquired. They are divided between large groups (Thales, Saint Gobain, etc.), SMEs and technological start-ups.

Over a 10-year period, about 30% of PhDs enter the world of academic research in France or abroad. Some go on to secondary education. Most pursue a career in the private sector with a very wide range of scientific and management professions in France or abroad. The number of unemployed PhDs is around 3%.

While the historical career outlet of the PhD is higher education and research, a significant and growing number of PhDs are pursuing their careers in the private sector, in many types of functions, and not only in R&D. According to the statistical study conducted in 2017 by the MESR on PhDs who graduated in 2015, 46% of PhDs in physics have a job in the academic sector and exactly as many in the private sector, of which only 20% are in R&D. For more details see : https://www.edpif.org/fr/parcours/poursuite.php

More than half of the PhDs are employed in the academic world in France (universities and research organizations) or abroad. Many PhDs also join the R&D departments of large technology-based groups (Thales, Safran, Areva, EDF, etc.), while others find employment in small and medium-sized companies with high industrial and technological value or in start-ups, of which they may also be founders.

#6 University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) Best Medical Schools: Research; U.S. News and World Report 2023

Preparation for Professional Success

Our CAMPEP accredited programs  are grounded in providing the highest standard of patient care. Our students have numerous opportunities to gain hands-on experience at some of the most advanced medical imaging and therapy facilities in the world through paid clinical work; practicum experience (master's degree); clinical shadowing (certificate program); opportunities for research, publication, and presentation; and much more. It is for this reason that our degree and certificate programs enjoy a high residency placement rate for our students, year after year. Our medical physics faculty, staff, and residents are invested in making our students competitive for medical physics residency programs and help them to develop the competencies and skills needed for professional success.

Program Objectives

  • Provide students with comprehensive exposure to the science and art of the physics of radiation oncology, medical imaging, and radiation safety
  • Prepare each student for a future career as a medical physicist in at least one subspecialty
  • Provide students with information on pathways for non-clinical career opportunities
  • Prepare students for a medical physics residency, PhD program in medical physics, or graduate studies in a related area, if so desired
  • Prepare students, academically and clinically, for Part I of the certification examinations of the American Board of Radiology (ABR)

We welcome you to  contact us  to learn more about the possibilities that await you in the Medical Physics Graduate Programs at Penn.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Medical Physics Graduate Programs are strong proponents of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We support students from diverse backgrounds because we believe that fostering an inclusive, multicultural environment benefits our students, our programs, and the field of medical physics at large.

The Medical Physics Graduate Programs’ diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are supported by the University of Pennsylvania , Penn Medicine , the Department of Radiation Oncology , the Perelman School of Medicine , the Department of Bioengineering , and the Physics Department .

Two (2) $25,000 scholarships are available per year to support students who enroll full-time in our Master of Science in Medical Physics degree program.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important and widely used imaging modality for making clinical diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring treatment response.   The course, taught by an imaging physicist, will introduce students to the fundamental principles behind the physics of MRI and offers practical, hands-on experience with an MRI scanner.
