How the SAT Changed My Life

This month, the University of Texas, Austin, joined the wave of selective schools reversing Covid-era test-optional admissions policies, once again requiring applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores.

Many colleges have embraced the test-optional rule under the assumption that it bolsters equity and diversity, since higher scores are correlated with privilege. But it turns out that these policies harmed the teenagers they were supposed to help. Many low-income and minority applicants withheld scores that could have gotten them in, wrongly assuming that their scores were too low, according to an analysis by Dartmouth. More top universities are sure to join the reversal. This is a good thing.

I was one of the disadvantaged youths who are often failed by test-optional policies, striving to get into college while in foster care and homeless. We hear a lot about the efforts of these elite schools to attract diverse student bodies and about debates around the best way to assemble a class. What these conversations overlook is the hope these tests offer students who are in difficult situations.

For many of us, standardized tests provided our one shot to prove our potential, despite the obstacles in our lives or the untidy pasts we had. We found solace in the objectivity of a hard number and a process that — unlike many things in our lives — we could control. I will always feel tenderness toward the Scantron sheets that unlocked higher education and a better life.

Growing up, I fantasized about escaping the chaos of my family for the peace of a grassy quad. Both my parents had mental health issues. My adolescence was its own mess. Over two years I took a dozen psychiatric drugs while attending four different high school programs. At 14, I was sent to a locked facility where my education consisted of work sheets and reading aloud in an on-site classroom. In a life skills class, we learned how to get our G.E.D.s. My college dreams began to seem like delusions.

Then one afternoon a staff member handed me a library copy of “Barron’s Guide to the ACT .” I leafed through the onionskin pages and felt a thunderclap of possibility. I couldn’t go to the bathroom without permission, let alone take Advanced Placement Latin or play water polo or do something else that would impress elite colleges. But I could teach myself the years of math I’d missed while switching schools and improve my life in this one specific way.

After nine months in the institution, I entered foster care. I started my sophomore year at yet another high school, only to have my foster parents shuffle my course load at midyear, when they decided Advanced Placement classes were bad for me. In part because of academic instability like this, only 3 percent to 4 percent of former foster youth get a four-year college degree.

Later I bounced between friends’ sofas and the back seat of my rusty Corolla, using my new-to-me SAT prep book as a pillow. I had no idea when I’d next shower, but I could crack open practice problems and dip into a meditative trance. For those moments, everything was still, the terror of my daily life softened by the fantasy that my efforts might land me in a dorm room of my own, with endless hot water and an extra-long twin bed.

Standardized tests allowed me to look forward, even as every other part of college applications focused on the past. The song and dance of personal statements required me to demonstrate all the obstacles I’d overcome while I was still in the middle of them. When shilling my trauma left me gutted and raw, researching answer elimination strategies was a balm. I could focus on equations and readings, like the scholar I wanted to be, rather than the desperate teenager that I was.

Test-optional policies would have confounded me, but in the 2009-10 admissions cycle, I had to submit my scores; my fellow hopefuls and I were all in this together, slogging through multiple-choice questions until our backs ached and our eyes crossed.

The hope these exams instilled in me wasn’t abstract: It manifested in hundreds of glossy brochures. After I took the PSAT in my junior year, universities that had received my score flooded me with letters urging me to apply. For once, I felt wanted. These marketing materials informed me that the top universities offered generous financial aid that would allow me to attend free. I set my sights higher, despite my guidance counselor’s lack of faith.

When I took the actual SAT, I was ashamed of my score. Had submitting it been optional, I most likely wouldn’t have done it, because I suspected my score was lower than the prep-school applicants I was up against (exactly what Dartmouth found in the analysis that led it to reinstate testing requirements). When you grow up the way I did, it’s difficult to believe that you are ever good enough.

When I got into Harvard, it felt like a miracle splitting my life into a before and after. My exam preparation paid off on campus — it was the only reason I knew geometry or grammar — and it motivated me to tackle new, difficult topics. I majored in computer science, having never written a line of code. Though a career as a software engineer seemed far-fetched, I used my SAT study strategies to prepare for technical interviews (in which you’re given one or more problems to solve) that landed me the stable, lucrative Google job that catapulted me out of financial insecurity.

I’m not the only one who feels affection for these tests. At Harvard, I met other students who saw these exams as the one door they could unlock that opened into a new future. I was lucky that the tests offered me hope all along, that I could cling to the promise that one day I could bubble in a test form and find myself transported into a better life — the one I lead today.

The sunday essay: my genderfluid god.

Some thoughts on my queer and Sikh identities, and how they mesh and collide.

S undays were exciting, as they promised crispy bread pakora and chai over Punjabi chatter. If I was lucky, there would be jelabi, an orange spiral of sweet goodness prepped in the hot, crowded kitchen. I’d gulp it down in a single bite, sitting under the paintings of martyrs being scalped and buried alive.

Afterwards, I’d run into the kitchen with sticky hands and an empty plate. I could feel the heat on the hairs of my arms from the giant puddle of oil in the wok; hear the sound of metal clanging against heads of garlic; see the kind face of a man pouring more water into the refill zone and turbans shining under the fluorescent lighting. The langar hall promised a warm meal for all.

My nani (maternal grandmother in Punjabi), with her round sunglasses and white shawls, hoisted me onto her knees to tell me stories of Sikhi and the origins of langar. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh guru of ten, was given 21 rupees to start a business. He met weary and tired religious travellers on his way to the city. He offered to give them money, but they said receiving money from a well-off man felt degrading. So Guru Nanak brought food and cooked it, sitting on the floor with the religious folks and exchanging stories. This created the tradition of langar, where we all sit together on the floor to symbolise our equality in God’s eyes.

So we sit on blue mats, our feet equally cold in the heatless room. My father spends more time in the langar hall than in the prayer room. This is where he chats with the men he met in small Onehunga flats when they were starving migrants. Everyone is welcome to langar; for this purpose, the langar hall and kitchen are always separate from the worship room. There is no need to thank a God you do not believe in to accept our kindness.

T he most significant act of devotion as a Sikh is to take care of the world around us, because we believe we are simultaneously part of God as well as God’s creation. Through cooking meals, donating money, volunteering and teaching children or elderly people, Sikhs are worshipping God. This act is called seva.

At age 12, I followed my nani’s loose pastel scarf into the gurdwara (place of worship) when I noticed a group of elderly women, heads covered in devotion with bright scarves, reciting the Punjabi alphabet. Their voices sounded tender yet powerful, an elder again becoming a child. Nani explained that she was the only educated girl out of her six sisters. Despite nani’s desire to attend university, she felt unsafe being the only woman to attend the local campus.

At home, I would ask my father how my dadi ( paternal grandmother) would reply to his letters when it cost a dollar for every minute he called home. She would ask a village girl to read it out loud to her, sipping chai in her pale and sunny home, the words a blur of jumbled letters. How strange for my religion to create a new text for the benefit of lower-caste people and women, only to leave generations of women uneducated in the name of culture. I imagined my nani as a girl, curled up in her grandmother’s bed with a stomach full of fresh milk, hearing bedtime stories of Sikh liberation. A light switched off and a promise of a better world tomorrow.

Our current guru is Guru Granth Sahib, a book written in Gurmukhi. All these bright scarves, spent in devotion to guru, they could not see. I pray for them, as they are a part of me; their joy at reading is mine.

Through people’s acts of seva, I learnt how to read Gurmukhi. We often discussed religious stories, and I became fascinated with the concept of gender in Sikhi. God does not have a gender, as they (God) existed before the manmade idea of gender. God is formless, transcendent. We dance with them, we are them, we are a part of their creation, and if we align ourselves right with the prayers and avoidance of maya (illusions of the world like drugs, beauty standards, wealth and competition with one another) we could join them in the centre of the universe.

In Sikhi, the word for God is ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ( pronounced wa-he-gu-roo) , translating to “ teacher of the air”. As we speak, we transmit knowledge; within this knowledge, God is present, guiding our hands gently. What is more genderfluid than the air itself?

O n the other hand, my Sikh identity is at odds with my queerness. Sometimes, at parties, my shoe kicking into the dirt of West Auckland backyards, I’d make comments about God, and they would be met with dismissive laughter. Religion is a bit of a joke in queer communities, and after centuries of being at odds with one another, who can blame them? Religion and queerness mimic the patterns of an overdomineering mother, wishing to craft her child out of the clay from the lakeside, and a child with fast feet. Neither realise that they cannot exist without each other; in their moulding and destruction of one another, they create one another.

Over the coffee table covered with Punjabi newsletters and biscuits, my nani laughed about a story of two women marrying. I often think of being a child, listening to my nana’s (maternal grandfather in Punjabi) prayer as the sun dips away. The gentle pull of his hands as he moves over the prayer book. The birds easing to sleep; the sweet scent of mothballs from my grandmother’s shawl. Queerness is a religion: a devotion to discovering oneself. Maybe it’s selfish to want more than one religion, to want a God and a girl to understand it too.

Since I was a child, sprinting through the hallways wearing a bandana and jeans instead of a salwar kameez with a dupatta, I knew I was different. My bisexuality often manifests as isolation from the right way of performing femininity. Men and women occupy different spaces in the temple, sitting opposite one another for cultural rather than religious reasons. In protest, I often followed my nana to the men’s section; a long-haired girl wearing a loosely wrapped scarf with her boyish jumpers.

If you must use a photo for every story involving the former president, find something newsworthy and informative.

Regarding the March 21 front-page article “ Hogan leads big in bid for blue seat ”:

Can someone, anyone, please explain who the random respondents questioned for this Post-University of Maryland poll were? The results trumpeted on the front page claimed to show the main Republican competitor for Maryland’s open seat in the U.S. Senate, former governor Larry Hogan, ahead of Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) by 12 points and ahead of Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks (D) by 14 points.

Who are these people, besides being registered voters with apparently nothing better to do than answer calls and supply personal information and opinions to complete strangers? I’m just curious. As a Maryland resident who still has a landline only to locate my misplaced cellphone and whose cellphone kindly labels calls from unknown numbers as spam, I wonder why they answered. Given that Maryland Democrats have an almost 2-to-1 advantage over Republicans in party identification , that The Post’s own poll shows that Maryland residents strongly prefer Democratic control of the Senate, and that Hogan is loathed by the state’s supporters of Donald Trump, I find this supposed commanding lead highly suspect. Let’s take this polling with the grain of salt it well deserves.

Dead White men on dead white trees

Thanks for the March 16 Style article “ Female artists are being erased from chain newspapers ” on the continuing challenge of shrinking platforms for print cartoonists, especially women.

“Breaking Cat News” creator Georgia Dunn is spot on in her observation that “there are more dead men than living women in the funny pages.” The Post is itself guilty of stagnating, perpetually rerunning deceased men’s cartoons. Why not stop printing “Peanuts”? I understand it is an iconic comic, but all its strips are archived and easily available elsewhere. There are so many new and talented cartoonists, both women and men. It’s obviously not possible to print them all, but let’s make room for the new.

The newspaper is not radio or TV with indefinite time to fill and dedicated oldies channels. You’ve still got two pages that can easily be filled with funny and/or insightful comic strips.

I really miss some of the comics discussed in the Style article on the lack of female cartoonists represented in news publications and how they continue to suffer from widespread downsizing. “Rhymes With Orange” was a truly witty comic, and to remove it and continue to print something like “Reply All Lite” is just an insult if it is supposed to be about representing female authors. When “Reply All” was a full strip, it was at times amusing. The “Lite” version is a waste of valuable space. Without comics, I’d likely unsubscribe to the print edition, even though I love having a daily paper at the table to leaf through at breakfast. I know there is a full array of comics in the online version, but the format is clunky and time-consuming. Please bring back “Rhymes With Orange” if nothing else.

An undying warning on yellowed paper

In my files of old articles and quotations, I came across an Outlook essay published on Oct. 30, 2011, titled “ Pro-life’s new tactic: Redefine a ‘person.’ ” The headline on the continuation of Jessica Valenti’s essay was “What if embryos and women had equal rights?”

The paper is yellow with age, and I know Outlook does not exist anymore. However, this essay could be published now without a single word being changed and it would be as relevant as it was in 2011. Have we not learned anything in 13 years? I suggest publishing it again, along with Mark Burrier’s accompanying illustration. I wonder who would notice.

Don’t paper over red stains

Why on Earth do Post readers not see reporting on the House’s impeachment inquiry into President Biden above the fold on the front page every single day? Readers need to be shown just how much time their elected legislators are spending on this project, even as a succession of their own witnesses testify that there were and are no links between the president and the business dealings lawmakers are looking into, and even as impeachment inquiry ringleaders themselves appear to know there is no corroborating evidence of the existence of a “Biden Crime Family.”

Supporters of the impeachment investigation will say Lev Parnas, who worked with Rudy Giuliani to try to find evidence that Biden was corrupt but has since testified that such allegations were a Russian intelligence operation, was a damaged witness. But any prosecutor knows there are few “perfect witnesses.” Parnas’s testimony, along with the accounts of others, should have been quoted extensively where it was hard to miss.

The failure of this impeachment effort is a huge story, and it should be reported as such.

Regarding the March 19 news article “ Trump may enlist Paul Manafort, who was criticized for ties to Russia ”:

For me, headlines serve several purposes. First, they aim to draw me into a story so I will read it. Next, they help set the tone for the article, providing an initial context. Finally, they serve as the first draft of history for future researchers.

By all accounts, this headline did a disservice. Paul Manafort will go down in history as having been convicted by a jury of his peers of financial crimes. History will then note that he was pardoned by Donald Trump in the waning days of his presidency. After that, his ties to Russia will be discussed.

I can’t wait for this year’s anniversary of Watergate, so I can see a headline that reads: “President Nixon, known for his fondness of tape recorders, resigned 50 years ago.”

‘Conservatives’ can’t even conserve ‘conservative’

Regarding the March 22 news article “ Senate Bill 4 remains on hold, but fear and confusion are mounting ”:

Now that journalists have seen Republican states fall in line to upend 130 years of precedent, practice and practicality by taking it upon themselves to supersede federal immigration law, perhaps The Post will give up the habit of calling Republicans “conservative.” It’s hard enough to follow the news. Today’s Republicans are not by any stretch of the imagination “conservatives.” They are radicals, albeit of varying degrees.

A disconcerting effort

In recent weeks, I’ve seen an uptick in what I think is a misuse of the term “concerted effort” in The Post. It has long been my understanding that one person cannot make a concerted effort, since that term describes an effort by at least two people acting “in concert.” Similarly, you cannot have a one-person conspiracy.

The Feb. 4 Sports article “ All-star, all grown up ” reported that Washington Capital Tom Wilson “has made a concerted effort to avoid the kinds of hits that land him in front of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.” The Feb. 23 Sports article “ Ruiz working to catch up behind the plate for Nats ” told readers that Washington National Keibert Ruiz “made a concerted effort to fix his defense.” And in the March 18 Sports article “ Capitals rookie Miroshnichenko goes from insurance policy to lineup staple ,” Capital Ivan Miroshnichenko “is making a concerted effort to learn English.”

Is this an approved usage per The Post’s style manual? Or should editors make a concerted effort to return this term to its original usage?

I read with amusement Benjamin Dreyer’s proclamation in his March 13 op-ed, “ A hymn to anachronyms ,” that carbon paper is “dead as doornails and dodos and the IBM Selectric.” Every day at the Richard J. Daley Center, which houses Chicago’s largest civil courthouse, lawyers slip sheets of carbon paper between preprinted blanks and hand-write court orders in triplicate. As a millennial, I’ve never touched a Selectric, but I don’t leave for court without a paperclip and a ballpoint pen.

Heavy darkness, meet light light

Amid the news of the world, whether it’s the climate crisis, the migrant crisis, wars on several continents or, oh yeah, the upcoming elections, I always find comfort in the monthly essays by Anne Lamott. She has a miraculous way of being profound as well as humorous. Describing a walk with a longtime friend in her March 17 essay, “ One sure path to truth: A walk with your oldest friend ,” she made gentle fun of her aging body and its memory lapses and aching joints, but appreciated the joys of nature in the birdsong and trees along the way. There’s little that individuals can do to solve the overwhelming problems of our world, but following Lamott’s example to nurture friendships and appreciate the world around us will help shine a light some ways into the darkness.

What is Indiana's cell phone law? Hands-free driving is required for Hoosiers

For those considering a road trip to Indiana or for Hoosiers who need a refresher on local driving laws, it's worth noting the state is hands-free. This means using phones and other mobile devices behind the wheel could lead to a fine.

Here's what to know if you're hitting the road:

Can I have my phone in my hand while driving in Indiana?

No. Indiana has a hands-free driving law, and the use of all telecommunication devices unless hands-free or voice-operated is prohibited.

What is Indiana's cell phone law?

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation , Indiana implemented a hands-free law while driving on July 1, 2020, with the goal to reduce distracted driving and improve safety on Hoosier roadways. Eric J. Holcomb, Republican governor of Indiana, signed the measure into law on March 18, 2020.

What is hands-free driving?

Hands-free driving prohibits the use of mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, while driving in hopes to reduce crashes and deaths. In 15 states with hands-free laws, traffic fatalities have decreased by an average of 16 percent, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Out of the 15 states and District of Columbia, all with hands-free laws before 2018, 12 saw a decrease in their traffic fatality rates within two years after passing and enforcing their new laws and two states do not have available data.

Why did Indiana implement a hands-free driving law?

Indiana has had a no texting while driving law in place since 2011, but it was unenforceable by law officials due to its narrow focus. By restricting the use of telecommunication devices as a whole, unless hands-free or voice operated, it became a more enforceable law.

Data also showed that crash risks are two to six times greater when drivers are manipulating a cellphone versus when not. On average people who text and drive take their attention away from the road for five seconds at a time, increasing the likelihood of a crash substantially.

How many crashes are caused by texting and driving?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , more than 3,100 people were killed and around 425,000 were injured due to distracted drivers in 2019.

Can I use my phone if driving in Indiana?

Yes. A phone cannot be used if it's in your hand, but if hands-free, it can be used. Options include Bluetooth, a headset or any other hands-free technology.

Can I hold my phone to dial a number or answer a call in Indiana?

No. Your cell phone should not be in your hands while driving any time your vehicle is moving. The only exception is to call 911 in an emergency.

Can I call 911 in Indiana with a hands-free law?

Yes. It's the only exception to the law.

Can I still talk on the phone while driving in Indiana?

Yes. Drivers may use a speakerphone, Bluetooth technology, earpiece, headphone or other device that allows for hands-free conversations.

Can I stop on the side of the road to make a call or text in Indiana?

No. Parking on the shoulder of an interstate is only allowed in an emergency. Although it's legal to park on the shoulder in some areas, it’s not always safe to do so. If you need to use your phone and can’t operate it hands free, it's best to pull off the road completely and stop somewhere like a gas station or convenience store.

Can I use my maps and GPS while driving in Indiana?

Yes, as long as the device is being used hands-free. Mounts and brackets may make it easier to view maps on mobile devices while staying focused on the road.

Can I listen to music, podcasts, etc. while driving in Indiana?

Yes, so long as the mobile device being used to play music or other audio is being used in a hands-free manner.

Does Indiana's hands-free driving law only apply to phones?

No. The law applies to all electronic devices like cellphones, tablets and smartwatches. Smartwatches may be used while driving as a conventional watch to check time; and amateur radio, two-way radio and citizens band may be used under the hands-free law if done in a safe manner.

What happens if I break Indiana's cell phone law?

How to Use Your Smartphone to Take Photos of the Solar Eclipse

O n Monday April 8, a total solar eclipse will pass across the U.S.. While the last solar eclipse visible from the U.S. occurred only seven years ago, it won’t be until 2045 that a total solar eclipse will pass again from coast to coast across the country.

Given that you might have to wait a couple decades for the next one, it might be worth taking a photo to capture the moment. While most of the eye-catching photos of total solar eclipses are taken with specialized cameras, smartphones can still do a reasonable job.

Here’s what to know about photographing the solar eclipse with a smartphone.

Use solar eclipse glasses

When viewing the eclipse, it’s imperative that you wear protective solar eclipse glasses to avoid eye damage from the sun’s light. You can also hold or tape the lens from a spare pair over your smartphone camera to prevent the light from damaging the lens, and to stop your shots from being overexposed.

If you’re in the thin track of land where the moon will fully cover the sun, known as the path of totality, you can take off your glasses. You should take the glasses off your smartphone camera then, too.

Set the focus and exposure

Most smartphone cameras automatically focus, but they often do a poor job. You can manually set the focus by tapping on the moon on your screen.

Most smartphones will also automatically set the exposure too, but again, you might want to manually tweak this. On an iPhone, after you tap to set the focus, a small sun icon will appear to the right of the focus box. Dragging this up and down will adjust the exposure. On an Android phone, after a long press on your desired focus point, dragging left and right adjusts the focus.

Use burst mode to capture the “diamond ring”

Just before the eclipse reaches totality and just after totality is ending, as one final bead of sunlight is visible, the bead combines with the thin ring around the rest of the moon to give the look of a “diamond ring.” This iconic image lasts for only a few seconds, so you might need to use burst mode to make sure you capture it.

Don’t zoom in too much

The sun will appear small in your photos, making it tempting to zoom in. Up to a point, this makes sense—most smartphones have a 2-5x optical zoom. But zooming in further than that just pixelates the image.

If you want to take close-up photos of the sun with your smartphone, consider purchasing a telephoto lens attachment. However, unless the attachment comes with a robust solar filter, be sure not to use the attachment before the sun is fully covered. Doing so would damage your smartphone lens.

Shoot your surroundings too

Because it can be hard to take a great photo of the eclipse with a smartphone, it is also worth taking photos that show your surroundings. A timelapse video of a group of eclipse-watchers with the sun in shot or a photo of people watching the eclipse staring upwards, for example, can capture the experience of observing the eclipse.
