Essay on Hockey

500+ words essay on hockey.

Hockey is one of the oldest and most popular team sports. Hockey is believed to have been in existence about 1200 years before the Ancient Games of Olympia. This game is played in most countries of the world. In India, hockey was introduced by the British Army regiments, and soon it became popular. The Indian Hockey team has won a total of eight gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals in the Olympics. This essay on hockey will help students to understand the sport. Also, they get to know the rules for playing this sport. They can also go through the CBSE Essays to get the list of essay topics. It helps them in improving their writing skills, and they can score good marks in the writing section of the English exam.

History of Hockey

The Hockey Association was founded in 1886. The first international tournament took place in 1895, and the International Rules Board was founded in 1900. The International Hockey Federation is the global governing body of field hockey, founded on 7th January 1924 in Paris. The Federation of International Hockey (FIH) not only regulates the sport but is also responsible for its development and promotion so as to guarantee a secure future for hockey. The FIH retains overall responsibility for hockey worldwide, including the rules of hockey, umpiring and coaching.

The British brought the hockey game to India. The first hockey club was formed in Kolkata in 1885. The Indian hockey team won the first Olympic gold in 1928 at the Amsterdam Games. They made their Olympic debut without conceding a single goal. The credit for this win goes to the legend Dhyan Chand, who stole the heart of everyone with his dazzling skills. It was the golden era of Indian hockey when India produced some of the finest players in hockey.

How to Play Hockey?

The rules set by the International Hockey Federation FIH are used worldwide to play hockey games. Hockey is played between two teams of 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. Before starting the game, a coin is tossed between the captains of the two teams. The team captain that wins the toss has to choose the starting end or start with the ball. The game time is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, 15-02-15-10-15-2-15. At the start of each quarter, as well as after goals are scored, the match is started with a pass from the centre of the field.

Field players may only play the ball with the flat side of the stick. Tackling is permitted as long as the tackler does not make contact with the attacker or his stick before playing the ball. Further, the player is not allowed to deliberately use his body or stick to shield the ball from a legitimate tackle. A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle, even if the ball touches the defender and goes into the goal.

When the ball passes over the sidelines, it is returned to play from the sideline either by an individual player by himself or with a push or hit, taken by a member of the team whose players were not the last to touch the ball before crossing the sideline. If it crosses the goal line after being last touched by an attacker, a 15-metre hit or pass can be made by any player in the defending team. A 15-metre hit is also awarded for offences committed by the attacking side within 15 metres of the end of the pitch they are attacking.

National Sports Day of India

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. In 2012, the Government of India designated 29th August as the country’s “National Sports Day”. On this occasion, the President of India gives out all the sports-related awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rajiv Khel Ratna Award. It is done to honour sportspersons and coaches who have made the nation proud with their service in their respective sports.

Hockey is a popular and interesting sport. But still, in India, it has not got much attention. There are very few people who have a passion for hockey and would like to be a part of the Indian hockey team. The Government of India should give more facilities and pay more attention to promoting hockey. It should be included in Physical Education, and proper coaching should be provided so students can start playing hockey at the school level.

Our National Game Hockey

Field Hockey is the National Sport of our Country. The designation of ‘National Sport’ is either designated on the basis of the popularity of a Game, or on the basis of the Game’s historical background. Hockey has a long-standing rich legacy, and this fact also gives this Sport the credibility of being the ‘National Game’ of our Country, India. Added to this, another obvious reason for designating this Sport as the National Sport of the Country, for the pride that is always evoked by the Countrymen.

In order to play this Game, this Game is required to be conducted either on plain grass or on a mat-like material called the turf. Playing field Hockey is a popularly played Sport in our Country, which is played by forming teams. This Game is played on grass, on artificial or watered turf, or on synthetic fields. The team has ten players in total and a Goalkeeper.

Hockey is played with a curved stick in the form of the letter ‘J’. The aim here is to move the ball forward to the Goal post with the curved end of the stick and thereby scoring a Goal. While the Goalkeeper gets the responsibility of hurdling and stopping the Goals so that they can stop the opposite team from scoring.

Hockey is a Sport that requires a lot of practice and dedication. The Game is played usually on a rectangular field, and this is considered to be an outdoor Sport. The Goalkeeper stands near the Goal post wearing a heavily padded jersey and helmets also with a curved Hockey stick. The Goalkeeper is required to wear protective suits because the ball, striking with the Hockey stick, rushes towards the Goal post at a highly accelerated speed, if the Goalkeeper does not wear a padded suit this may cause severe injuries to the Goalkeeper.

The Game starts with a toss between the captains of the two distinct teams. The captain who wins the toss will either select his side of the field where his team will play or he chooses to pass. The Game is played for 75 minutes in a single session. There are two rounds of each thirty-five minutes and one break in between the two sessions. The interval time is used for medications, strategic planning, also for treatment.

The wizardry of Indian hockey star Dhyan Chand, who dazzled the Amsterdam crowd with his brilliant talents, was the defining feature of this ruthless dominance. From 1928 until 1956, India's hockey juggernaut won six consecutive Olympic gold medals and won 24 successive matches. During this time, India scored 178 goals while surrendering only seven.

Hockey Equipment | There are numerous gears and equipment that safeguard a player from significant injury when playing hockey in a safe manner. Helmets, shoulder pads, neck guards, jockstraps, elbow pads, a hockey stick, and a ball or puck are also included in this equipment.

Hockey Rules | When teaching hockey to young children, you can apply the following basic rules; the ball can only be hit using the flat side of the player's stick. Other than the goalkeeper, Hockey players are not permitted to control the ball with their feet or any other part of their body at any time.

A goal can only be scored from inside the striking circle in front of the opposing goal box. It does not count if the hockey ball is hit from outside the circle and goes into the goal.

Hockey is a contact-free sport. Players are not permitted to push, trip, or physically contact an opponent. If this occurs, the other side may be given a free hit or a penalty.

The game is very important in India because it has been designated as the country's national sport. In addition, India has a long and illustrious history in sports. Furthermore, India has numerous excellent players who have represented the country, and it is the oldest recognised game in the country.

To summarise, hockey is India's national sport, yet it has never been formally recognised. But we can make this official by resurrecting the golden era of hockey. Our hockey team currently lacks government funding, but with our help, they can restore hockey's glory days.

Introduction.

Hockey, a sport that has been a significant part of global culture for centuries, is more than a game. It is a blend of speed, agility, strength, precision, and teamwork. Originating in the 18th century, it has evolved into a sport that is now played and loved in over 100 countries worldwide.

Evolution and Types of Hockey

Hockey has seen a wide range of transformations over the years. It originated as field hockey, played on grass, but with changing times and evolving technologies, it has branched into various forms. Ice hockey, roller hockey, and street hockey are some popular variations, each with its unique set of rules and equipment, yet all sharing the same fundamental objective: scoring goals against the opposing team.

The Influence of Hockey

Hockey has significantly influenced society, fostering unity and camaraderie. It serves as a platform where individuals, regardless of their background, can unite for a common goal. The sport has been instrumental in breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity, with leagues now featuring players of different genders, races, and nationalities.

In conclusion, hockey is more than just a sport. It’s a global phenomenon that transcends cultural and social boundaries, promoting unity and inclusivity. Its evolution and influence on society are a testament to its enduring appeal. As the sport continues to evolve, one can only anticipate its future contributions to the global sporting landscape.

500 Words Essay on Hockey

Hockey, a game of speed, agility, and precision, is more than just a sport. It is a reflection of cultural identity for many nations and a platform for athletes to display their skill and strategy. The sport’s roots trace back to antiquity, but its modern form has evolved significantly, becoming a global phenomenon that captivates millions.

The Origin and Evolution of Hockey

The origins of hockey are somewhat nebulous, with ancient civilizations across the world playing games that involved sticks and a ball or similar object. The contemporary form of the game, however, originated in the mid-19th century England. It was initially a pastime for British soldiers, but quickly spread to schools and eventually became a professional sport.

In the late 19th century, hockey made its way to North America, where it underwent significant transformation. Ice hockey, the variant most popular in North America, was born out of necessity due to the harsh winters. The game’s rules were adapted to suit the new environment, leading to a faster, more physical version of the sport.

Hockey: A Global Sport

Hockey is now a global sport, played in over 100 countries. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) governs the sport worldwide, overseeing international competitions like the Hockey World Cup and the sport’s inclusion in the Summer Olympics.

Ice hockey, governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), is a major sport in countries like Canada, the United States, and Russia. It features in the Winter Olympics and has professional leagues like the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America.

The Impact of Hockey

Hockey, in its various forms, has had a profound impact on society. It has served as a symbol of national pride, a catalyst for social change, and a medium for international diplomacy.

During the Cold War, for example, the “Miracle on Ice” – the victory of the US ice hockey team over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics – was a significant event that transcended the realm of sports. It was a symbolic victory that echoed the political tensions of the time.

In conclusion, hockey is more than just a game. It is a sport that has evolved over centuries, adapting to different cultures and climates, and has become a global phenomenon. It carries a significant societal impact, often reflecting the political and cultural nuances of the times. The sport of hockey, therefore, serves as a fascinating study of not just athletic prowess, but also of cultural, social, and political dynamics. Whether on the grassy fields or the icy rinks, hockey continues to captivate and inspire, standing as a testament to human creativity and competitive spirit.

Essay on Hockey | For Students and Children

Hockey, often called the “fastest game on ice,” is a sport that has captured the hearts of millions around the world. It’s a game of skill, teamwork, and passion, played on ice rinks and outdoor surfaces alike. In this essay, I will argue for the excitement and importance of hockey. By exploring its history, the impact it has on players and fans, and its role in promoting physical fitness, I aim to convey why hockey is a thrilling and valuable sport.

A Glimpse into Hockey’s History

Hockey’s roots can be traced back centuries, making it one of the oldest sports in the world. It is believed to have originated in Canada, where it quickly gained popularity in the late 19th century. The sport has since evolved into various forms, including ice hockey, field hockey, and street hockey. Its rich history showcases the enduring appeal and cultural significance of hockey.

The Excitement of the Game

Hockey is a sport renowned for its exhilarating pace and thrilling moments. Players skate across the ice with remarkable speed, showcasing their agility and skill. The rapid movement of the puck, combined with the physicality of the game, keeps fans on the edge of their seats. Every goal, pass, and save is met with cheers and excitement, making hockey an unforgettable experience for both players and spectators.

Building Character and Teamwork

Hockey is not just about scoring goals; it also instills valuable life lessons in its participants. It teaches teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Players learn to work together towards a common goal, developing strong bonds with their teammates. These qualities extend beyond the rink and serve as important life skills that can be applied in school, work, and everyday life.

A Global Phenomenon

Hockey knows no geographical boundaries; instead, it is a worldwide phenomenon that brings together individuals from various backgrounds. For instance, countries such as Canada, the United States, Russia, Sweden, and Finland have well-established hockey traditions. Furthermore, international competitions like the Winter Olympics underscore the sport’s global allure. In essence, hockey extends beyond borders, nurturing friendships and bonds among individuals across the globe.

Physical Fitness and Well-Being

Participating in hockey promotes physical fitness and well-being. The sport requires players to be in top physical condition, with a focus on strength, speed, and endurance. Skating, shooting, and passing the puck are excellent cardiovascular exercises, helping players stay fit and healthy. Moreover, hockey encourages an active lifestyle, benefiting players of all ages.

A Sport for All Ages

Hockey is a sport that can be enjoyed at any age. Furthermore, from youth leagues to adult recreational teams, there’s a place for everyone in the hockey community. Moreover, it’s not just a game for professional athletes; it’s a sport that brings people together. Additionally, it provides opportunities for physical activity and camaraderie throughout life.

Hockey has the power to inspire future generations of players and fans. Young children watching their hockey heroes on television or attending local games often dream of becoming hockey stars themselves. This aspiration motivates them to work hard, set goals, and excel in various aspects of their lives, both on and off the ice.

Origins of Hockey and Game Concept Essay

Introduction, the main body.

Hockey is a popular family of sports, the main purpose of which resolves around scoring a goal by hitting a puck with a special hockey stick. The most famous types of hockey that immediately come to mind whenever it is mentioned are ice hockey and, to a lesser extent, field hockey. Nowadays, though, there are many more types of hockey, like air hockey, foot hockey, and even underwater hockey. However, all of them are just variations of the original game with only a few minor differences. Hockey is commonly considered as one of the most entertaining sports to watch and is currently placed as the 3rd most popular sport in the world, having over 2 billion fans in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and many other countries.

The origin of this sport is rather unclear and is open up to a debate even now. What is certain is that the roots of this sport go back to ancient times. Numerous researches show that the very first form of hockey was played by Egyptians 4000 years ago, as shown by various carvings. The game with sticks and a projectile has also been played by ancient Romans, Greeks, and even Aztecs. This comes as no surprise, as kicking around a ball-like object as entertainment was pretty natural during those times; later it led to hitting ball-like objects with a club or a stick, which is most likely the way hockey was invented. Ice hockey in its early form can be seen on various paintings in the Netherlands, depicting Dutchmen playing a version of golf on ice ( Ice hockey , n.d.). It was mostly played in small towns, though, and games were not organized until the 18th century. Blackheath Hockey Club is considered the first hockey club in the world, founded in 1862. Before Blackheath HC, there were no direct references to a hockey club, despite hockey being played in numerous schools 75 years before the foundation of the club. The first recorded ice hockey game was organized by James Creighton in 1875 in Montreal between two teams of Victoria Skating Rink. Both teams played on a confined ice area, and all names of the players and the score were recorded.

Regarding rules, outdoor field hockey is very similar to football, with the only difference being that hockey players hit the ball-like object with a stick instead of their feet. Teams consist of a Goalkeeper, Defenders, Midfielders, and Attackers, a total of 11 players. Field hockey is played on a pitch 91.4 meters long and 55 yards wide with a ball of 23 cm circumference. Indoor hockey rules are different: the pitch is smaller (44 meters x 22 meters) and the total number of players in a team is 5 (). The rules of field hockey are published by the International Hockey Federation, both for indoor and outdoor hockey. In ice hockey, each team has five skaters who are trying to retrieve a puck and score it into the opponent’s goal, and a goaltender, whose purpose is preventing the puck from entering the team’s goal. The game usually consists of three 20-minute periods of action, with 15-minute intermissions in between (). Before the beginning of each period, the ice is resurfaced (except for 5- and 10-minute overtime periods). The game always starts with a faceoff conducted by an on-ice official, and each period starts at the center of the ice rink. A team that scores more goals than the other team is declared the winner.

Ice hockey is known as a very brutal sport, which often leads to casualties and various injuries to the players. The International Ice Hockey Association has published rules regarding the equipment of skaters and goaltenders. Protective equipment of skaters includes facial protection and mouthguard, elbow pads, gloves, helmets, neck and throat protectors, and shin pads. Players can attach two types of facial protection to their helmets – cage and visor. Equipment that does not correspond to IIHF standards or may seem dangerous is prohibited during play. These rules are very important to follow, as the player who wears dangerous equipment will be ruled off the ice, and his team will get a warning from the referee. Such measures are aimed at reducing an already considerable level of danger present in ice hockey.

Canada is commonly considered as one of the most (if not the most) dominant countries in hockey and the best hockey nation in the world. It is the primogenitor of ice hockey, which is treated by Canadians as their sport. Hockey is Canada’s official national winter sport, passionately played and watched by Canadian men, women, and children over the past decade. Over 60% of National Hockey League players come from Canada. Founded in 1917 as the successor to the National Hockey Association, NHL is regarded as the main professional ice hockey league in the world. NHL was organized in Montreal, Quebec, and consists of 30 member clubs, 7 of which are in Canada and 23 are in the USA.

However, Canada is not the only country that plays hockey with passion. Although hockey is not treated as high in the US as in Canada, lots of Americans find this sport very entertaining and becoming more popular each day for several reasons. For instance, the success of American teams in the NHL greatly increased the interest in hockey, as well as the fact that now NHL players can participate in the Olympic Games. At present, there are ice hockey federations in 74 countries of the world. Despite hockey being more popular in the colder, northern climates of the world, it is no less popular overseas. You would be surprised to discover that Japan is in the top 10 in overall hockey players per country (Fischer, 2015). Their level is not as high, but their love for the game is quite surprising, considering the population of nearly 123 million people. South Korea is also interested in ice hockey, namely because of the 2018 Olympics held in Pyeongchang. Also, ice hockey is largely popular in Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

As in every sport, playing hockey can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. The game is very fast-paced, thus, it helps to burn a lot of calories. To be more precise, players burn about 0,061 calories per pound in a minute, which may lead to a huge weight loss in a long run (Health Fitness Revolution, 2015). Racing on the rink provides a cardiovascular workout, which helps to improve breathing and cellular activity. Because fast skating is broken up by periods of rest, it is similar to high-intensity interval training, allowing you to burn even more calories and boost your metabolism. Playing hockey also can help you to develop leg muscles along with increasing endurance of triceps, forearms, and shoulder muscles. You will increase your muscular and bone strength, improve your overall body function, and will decrease the chances of getting injured during the game. The fast pace of the game will help to improve your reflexes, agility, and hand-eye coordination, as well as improve your overall balance. Aside from the positive physical effects gained from playing hockey, you will also learn to communicate better, work in a team and develop good sportsmanship. Hockey may also help you to develop self-confidence, patience, and self-esteem.

However, hockey also has its disadvantages, some of which immediately pop up in people’s minds whenever they hear of hockey, i.e. body checks, fistfights, and missing teeth. Ice hockey is a very brutal sport, often resulting in concussions, shoulder, elbow, back, hip, and knee injuries (Roland, 2015). Violence is quite present in hockey; fighting is often used as a way of defending teammates and settling disputes with the opposite team. Therefore, the large amount of body protection that players wear during games is not surprising at all. Fight presence and frequent body contacts are also the reasons why IIHA forbids the use of dangerous equipment by players.

Hockey has always been an entertaining sport to play and watch. Having billions of fans all over the globe, it is commonly placed in the top 10 of the most popular sports in the world. Playing hockey is a great way to improve your body in various ways, develop strong communication and listening skills, as well as respect for authority and rules. It helps you to build your character and to discover important things like the correlation between action, reaction, and consequences, which will help you greatly in life.
