Sample statement.

From an early age I have always been interested in geography and travelling and as I have gotten older I feel that Geology is a highly relevant subject, made easier by the advanced technology we have access to today.

My choice to study Geology at a higher level has also been partly inspired by my Father, who is a practising Geologist, as he helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the subject and encouraged me to want to learn more.

To gain strong foundation knowledge of the subject I made sure to excel in Geography during my time at school and college. I also put in many hours of independent research for both school and personal geography projects.

Outside of school I took part in as many practical Geology studies as I could, mostly with my Father. This has taught me many practical and analytical skills, as well as teaching me how theoretical systems can be applied in field research.

When I am not studying I enjoy travelling as this allows me to learn more about how geography changes from country to country, and how this affects the lives of the people who live there.

I also enjoy playing sports and am a member of many local sports teams including football, cricket, and rugby. I am also a regular swimmer, runner, and cyclist. I enjoy working as a team to achieve a common goal. I strongly feel that my active lifestyle helps me to achieve a correct work/life balance and enables me to be a better student.

I hope that during my time at university I will have the chance to travel and take part in more field work to further develop my skills and understanding of Geology as a practical, as well as theoretical, subject.

Thinking beyond university I hope to put everything I have learnt to good use and follow in my Father’s footsteps by becoming a practising Geologist. I hope that I can use my diverse range of skills and personal attributes to help those people who live in more challenging geographical locations.

Geology Personal Statement

All it takes is a short walk outside to begin to appreciate how complex and intricate our Earth is, how it has formed and changed over time to become the planet we know today. Since I took Geology at GCSE my curiosity for the subject has transformed into a passion. Each lesson taught me something new about the formation of the earth; how violent changes in the past and paleo-climates influence the Earth today while giving me a key understanding of the subject and solidifying my aspirations of having a career in such an interesting field.

On a recent trip to Edinburgh, I really began to appreciate how the geology of a location influences how humans interact with an area, determining how it is developed and used. Whilst I was in Edinburgh I was constantly in awe of the geology; from Arthur's seat shadowing the city, to Edinburgh castle perched on top of a volcanic plug. I am fascinated by how geology has such a massive impact on human activity and how we as humans overcome the hurdles the geology of an area presents to us, for example, the challenges a fault line would present in the planning and construction of a dam for a reservoir.

In July, I did 5 days work experience within the Geotechnical Department of Mott MacDonald, a global engineering, management, and development consulting firm. My week in the department involved working on live projects for clients such as Severn Trent Water and Network rail, with some of the documents I completed being signed off to the clients. During my week I conducted a desk study of a proposed pipeline, this involved researching the superficial and bedrock geology of the route of the pipeline and evaluating the possible risks and challenges the geology might pose to its construction.

I was also tasked to research the geology and borehole records of a 13 mile stretch of rail line in Cannock. The records indicated that the area was rich in coal which meant I then had to research historical mining records to work out if there were any mines in the area and then map their location using ArcGIS. This information was then going to be used by the design and construction crews to highlight any potential hazards the mines could pose to construction. For my A-levels I am studying biology, geography, and psychology, along with an additional geology AS level, these subjects have helped to develop my mathematical ability and have shown me the links between each subject and the wider world. I am also currently teaching myself coding in the form of Python, I chose to do this because I recognise that we live in a computer-centered world and the need for basic coding knowledge is almost necessary.

However despite being mostly academic, I have also committed my free time to a variety of hobbies; for example, I was a member of the Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA) for over three years. Through PQA I played a lead role in a one night only production called Fright Night in Her Majesty's Theatre in London and in the same year I performed as Friedrich Von Trapp in my local amateur theatre society's performance of The Sound of Music.

In the summer of 2017 I bought myself a 1990 classic mini to engage myself in something different. I am slowly doing it up in my spare time, along with teaching myself the mechanics of the car and the skills I need in order to restore the mini to its former glory. Additionally, I have two part-time jobs as a waiter, which, along with acting have boosted my confidence and helped develop my interpersonal skills. I believe that the qualities I have developed from my work and acting will benefit me with the transition from sixth-form to University. I feel my knowledge of Geology, as well as my enthusiasm to learn, will be very useful in studying Geology at University and will help me to discover where geology could take me in my career.

Writing your Personal Statement

The particular parts of geology that really interest you and why.

Are there things you would like to learn more about (e.g. volcanoes, earthquakes, minerals, fossils etc.)? Do you see your future career path involving them?

Things you are doing or have previously done that show you have an interest in geology. 

These can include:

• Studying AS or A-level geology or physical geography
• Trips you have been on with school, family or friends that have involved an aspect of geoscience, such as climbing holidays or visits to museums like the Natural History Museum in London or the Scarborough Rotunda, North Yorkshire . What did you find fascinating about them?
• Membership or participation with local geological conservation groups, clubs such as Rockwatch , or outdoor pursuit clubs like climbing, caving, diving or hiking.
• Previous or future participation in geoscience events (either in or outside school), such as the National Schools Geology Challenge or any events in Earth Science Week
• Relevant books you have read and TV programmes/films you have seen that have fascinated you. Think a little further than volcanoes and earthquakes here - what about climate change, or the oil and mining industries?
• Perhaps there are eminent geologists you follow on social media, or whose work you are particularly familiar with. This is a really good way to demonstrate to universities that you have some familiarity with the work research staff undertake.

What about your other extra-curricular activities, such as sports, music, languages etc? Having an interest in pursuing these while you are at university suggests you will be contributing to student life beyond your studies, as well as demonstrating that you are a dedicated individual.

• Is it the start of longer-term academic studies? Perhaps you hope to go on to post-graduate study afterwards.
• Will learning from highly-regarded geologists be useful to you?

Effective writing skills

The personal statement is also an opportunity to demonstrate that you can write clearly, concisely and effectively. Spelling and grammar must be correct; this shows that you have proof-read the document and that you care about getting these aspects right. 

There is no need to use overly complicated terminology, but ensure it’s not overly simplified. As a guide, if your teachers do not recognise some of the words you are using then you have probably used terms which are too technical.

Another area that appeals to many geology majors is environmental geology, in which geological skills are required to help predict, avoid, or mitigate problems connected with pollution, urban development, and geologic hazards such as flooding and excessive erosion. The Humanitarian Side of Geology

Working in a humanitarian field when you’re a geologist often means working for nonprofit organizations, where no big mining firm or other environmentally damaging organization is making gains from unethical practices. You could choose to go to a developing country and teach, working directly with people. Or you may want to get stuck in to more practical work with an environmental focus.

Inspiration

Dr. Carlos Primo C David is a Geologist at the University of the Philippines, National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP NIGS). He studied at the University of the Philippines, and then got a PhD from Stanford University. He now works as a hydrologist, running rain and flood models at NIGS in Manila, where intense typhoon and monsoon seasons cause extensive annual floods and deaths. At the beginning of his career, David wasn’t so concerned with the social impact of his work, but he now works with charities like Christian Aid, who provide opportunities for geologists and hydrologists like him to help vulnerable communities that live in riverside slum dwellings. He and his colleagues have developed Project NOAH, a simple communications tool, which provides the Filipino public with real-time weather and flood information via the internet and text messages. Geology for Global Development aims to encourage and support young geoscientists to make a great contribution to international development throughout their careers. In the past, they have run placement programs in Guatemala, the Himalayas and worked in partnership with CAFOD’s Humanitarian Department and other organizations. If you’ve just completed your Bachelor’s degree and would like to travel abroad and learn a new language, what about a volunteer program? www.goabroad.com offers 106 geology volunteer abroad programs, which could lead onto a paid position and/or some amazing work experience. Fly off to Thailand, Peru, Colombia, Cambodia or Nicaragua and make a difference. Volunteering looks great on your resume and can help give you a leg up when it comes to rising in the ranks because with a bit of motivation, you can often take on more responsibility when you’re working as a volunteer than you would be able to in a paid position.

Ok, now let’s look at the benefits of making yourself a specialist. The first benefit is that you are able to go for more senior positions with a master’s degree. You can provide more specialist knowledge and expertise to NGOs, and ultimately help more people more effectively that way. It will also help you get a job, as the pool of applicants in your area of specialization will be smaller. Convinced yet? Let’s look at some of the courses out there that might interest you.

The University of Akron, USA runs a M.Sc. in Environmental Geology. This course will provide you with expert knowledge of ground water, pollution impacts, microbe-mineral interactions, environmental change, biodiversity and remote sensing of buried structures. You’ll apply state-of-the-art field and laboratory techniques to study geologic and environmental issues in Ohio and around the world. This course costs USD 755 per module for international students.

Luleå University of Technology in Sweden hosts a M.Sc. in Exploration and Environmental Geosciences, which would provide you with cutting edge knowledge in exploration and mining techniques and environmental geochemistry, mine water mitigation and geohydrology. When at the university, you’ll be a stone’s throw away from some of the most active areas of mining and exploration in Europe. This course costs EUR 16,200 per year for non-EEA students. It’s a two-year, full-time course. You can either study exploration, mining geology and geophysics or environmental geosciences as part of your master’s program.

The Masters in Marine Geology and Geophysics at the University of Southampton, UK, has a range of modules for you to choose from, including chemical and physical oceanography, computational data analysis for geophysicists and ocean scientists, geodynamics and solid Earth geophysics, basin analysis, global climate change cycles, seafloor exploration and surveying, plus many more modules, and that’s just year one! This two-year, full-time course costs GBP 21,666 per year for non-EEA students.

The University of Portsmouth, UK, offers students a M.Sc. in Environmental Geology and Contamination. It will prepare you for dealing with contaminated sites by providing you with their state-of-the-art geological and geotechnic labs for practical work; hands-on experience of using GPS, Total Stations and 3D laser scanners; classes with recognized experts in groundwater hydrology, environmental geology and contaminated land. After this course, you could become a contaminated land consultant, work in regulation or remediation, work with government agencies, environmental organizations or local authorities within the UK or abroad. This course costs GBP 13,700 for the one year of study, when you’ll cover Field Reconnaissance and Walk-Over Studies; Ground Investigation Techniques; Soil Mechanics; Desk Studies and Ground Models; Contaminated Land Risk Assessments; plus other modules and an independent research project. This could prepare you perfectly for a career helping protect thousands of people in developing countries from toxic and harmful waste and industrial pollution.

Cardiff University in Wales offers students the opportunities to complete their M.Sc. in Applied Environmental Geology, which is a one-year, full-time course with modules such as Geotechnical Engineering; Hydrology and Hydrogeology; Project Planning, Design and Management; Remote Sensing and Geophysics; Environmental Assessment and Regulation; plus other modules and a final dissertation. This course costs GBP 13,800 for the year.

If you missed the GATES meeting on "Writing a Personal Statement", we've compiled the advice from our wonderful graduate student panel below. You can also see real example statements from successful applications to graduate school and for GRFP fellowships at the bottom of this page.

The personal statement is your opportunity to talk about who you are, what you are interested in, and where you are coming from. Here, you can emphasize particularly relevant or important aspects of your CV. This is also the place to explain your journey if you started off in another field, took time off, or aren’t particularly proud of your GPA. If you have negative experiences to describe, include how you learned from them and how they have shaped you. This is very different from writing than a lab report, make sure it reflects your personality!

The personal statement is also a way to describe how you will fit into a potential graduate program and should be tailored for each school. You can suggest collaborations with other lab groups on campus, describe how your work will use an instrument or technique that’s available, and think about how the courses offered will help you attain your research goals. This will require a little digging through the department website but will show that you are truly interested in that particular program. 

Make sure you include how graduate school fits into your long-term plans. Mention why you are applying to a masters versus a PhD program. Describe what you hope to do afterwards. This isn’t a hard and fast commitment, but it shows you’ve thought about why you want to go to graduate school in the first place. 

Pay attention to the prompts! Different programs may want different types of statements. Make sure you are providing what they ask for. If a prompt is super vague, (politely) reach out to your potential advisor in that program and ask what they are looking for. 

The approach

There are many different ways to start writing a personal statement so you’ll need to find what works for you! A few of our panelist described writing it in a chronological fashion in order to end up at their current interests. Others panelists suggested a non-linear path, but everyone agreed the first draft is “word vomit”, so just get writing! If you can’t imagine writing about yourself, ask your friends to describe you and your awesome research. 

Get feedback and ask for examples! Ask your friends if it sounds like you. Ask your professors if it’s clear and concise. Graduate students and postdocs are a great resource as well. They have just been through this process and can offer lots of useful advice. Ask for their personal statements to use as an example!

Geophysics/geology personal statement example.

The Earth is constantly adapting to new changes. In fact, there is a great network progressively engaged to the reasoning of this occurrence and that is the link of natural processes and human civilization. Being validated over the years through researches, mankind has a great authority to change this planet and as a consequence, a new geological epoch is introduced. Entering the Anthropocene from the Holocene shows that humans have the greatest role in conserving the Earth’s sustainability and development. I choose to study Geophysics because I want to understand about the Earth’s behaviour. Having a better understanding about the Earth will give me a clear idea to overcome natural challenges in the future.

In the spirit of embracing my purpose of living which is to serve the world, I find my interest towards Earth Sciences is continually igniting my spark of aspiration to study Geophysics. By reading Discovering the Wonders of Our World by The Reader's Digest Associated Limited, I learned basic understanding of Geology such as the forces that are responsible in shaping the Earth and the cracks that divide the globe, making this subject exceptionally fascinating.

I learned more about earthquakes as I grew up. Knowing there are many scientists who face conflicts with the accuracy of earthquake prediction in terms of magnitude, it is my belief the main reason we are hindered from succeeding this complex system is that our understanding about the Earth is still vague. Japan had expected an earthquake with the moment magnitude of 8.0 but only to conclude the earthquake occurred was ten times stronger when it happened. On the other hand, having read an article regarding the latest work from Greece’s earthquake prediction that had recorded approximately 90% success made me realise the importance of Geophysics and Geology. Learning and understanding these subjects allow us to build a creative approach in the development of this world specifically in minimizing future damage to human civilization. Hence, millions of lives can be saved.

Furthermore, my interest in oceans has sparked my desire to study Geophysics. 95% of the oceans remain unexplored and this fact makes me more curious about ocean exploration where most volcanic activity and earthquakes happen. The underwater volcano eruption that occurred earlier this year in Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, Tonga is one of the incredibly interesting events as this volcano activity may form an island, which it reminds me of the formation of Hawaiian Islands.

In my opinion, studying in United Kingdom offers a vast range of opportunities in terms of academic quality and graduate employability. Besides that, Earth Sciences students at United Kingdom universities are among the happiest with their course as conducted in National Student Survey in 2016. Certainly, I want to circle myself with people who have the same dedication as I do. With excellent education standards, I believe United Kingdom is the best place to study.

My leadership skills help me to develop strong relationships with people. Having assigned as House Vice Captain, Vice President in English Language Society, and Treasurer in Badminton Club allows me to cultivate my organising, management, and motivating skills. In other words, I can manage stress easily, work cooperatively in a team, and plan strategically. Moreover, I love to learn new things on my own. I learned how to play the piano since I was 7 and use Adobe Illustration, Photoshop and After Effects since I was 11. Now I spend my leisure time learning Geology by watching lecture videos from Dr. Stephen Marshak and Dr. Eileen Herrstrom via Coursera, a platform for online studies.

I am excited to study Geophysics and Geology with hope of exploring the answers that are yet to discover. My strong desire to study the Earth’s behaviour will remain vital. With this, I hope my dream to become a successful scientist and make positive contribution to this world will turn into reality.
