3 By investing in cultural heritage preservation and tourism development, governments and communities can harness the economic potential of their heritage assets while safeguarding their cultural identity and integrity.

Challenges Facing Cultural Heritage:

Despite its immense value, cultural heritage faces numerous challenges in the modern world, including:

Urbanization and Development:

1 Rapid urbanization and development pose significant threats to cultural heritage. As cities expand, historic neighborhoods, archaeological sites, and cultural landscapes are often engulfed by modern infrastructure and construction projects.

2 Historic buildings and monuments are frequently demolished or altered to make way for new developments, resulting in the loss of tangible heritage and the destruction of architectural treasures.

3 Urban sprawl and population growth also lead to increased pressure on cultural sites, causing overcrowding, pollution, and degradation of the surrounding environment.

Globalization:

1 The homogenizing effects of globalization pose challenges to cultural diversity and traditional practices. Western cultural norms and values often dominate global markets, media, and popular culture, marginalizing indigenous and traditional knowledge systems.

2 Cultural globalization can lead to the erosion of local languages, customs, and traditions as communities adopt Western lifestyles and consumer habits.

3 The commodification of culture for commercial purposes can result in the exploitation and appropriation of indigenous knowledge, cultural artifacts, and sacred sites for profit.

Environmental Degradation:

1 Climate change, natural disasters, and environmental degradation pose significant risks to cultural heritage sites, ecosystems, and traditional livelihoods.

2 Rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and habitat loss threaten the survival and integrity of cultural landscapes, archaeological sites, and cultural practices.

3 Deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution degrade the natural environment, affecting the health and sustainability of cultural heritage sites and their surrounding ecosystems.

Conflict and War:

1 Armed conflict, political instability, and warfare pose grave risks to cultural heritage, as historic sites, monuments, and artifacts become targets of destruction, looting, and trafficking.

2 Cultural heritage is often caught in the crossfire of armed conflicts, becoming collateral damage in times of war and political turmoil.

3 Deliberate acts of cultural destruction, such as the intentional bombing of historic cities or the looting of archaeological sites for profit or ideological reasons, threaten to erase centuries of human history and cultural identity.

Neglect and Decay:

1 Neglect, lack of funding, and inadequate conservation efforts contribute to the decay and deterioration of cultural heritage sites and monuments.

2 Many historic buildings, archaeological sites, and cultural landscapes are in a state of disrepair due to insufficient maintenance and conservation, leading to irreversible damage and loss.

3 Without proper protection and management, cultural heritage assets are vulnerable to vandalism, theft, and illicit excavation, further endangering their survival and integrity.

Intangible Heritage Loss:

1 In addition to tangible heritage, intangible cultural heritage, such as oral traditions, traditional knowledge, rituals, and performing arts, is also at risk of being lost.

2 Rapid social change, globalization, and modernization threaten to erode traditional practices and cultural expressions that have been passed down through generations.

3 Languages, dialects, and indigenous knowledge systems are particularly vulnerable to extinction, as younger generations shift towards dominant languages and cultural norms.

Strategies for Preservation and Promotion:

To safeguard our cultural heritage for future generations, concerted efforts are needed at local, national, and international levels. Some key strategies include:

Conservation and Restoration: Investing in the conservation, restoration, and maintenance of historic sites, monuments, and artifacts to ensure their preservation for future generations. This involves employing scientific methods, technologies, and best practices to safeguard cultural heritage from decay, deterioration, and damage.

This includes engaging schools, universities, museums, and cultural institutions in initiatives to raise awareness about the significance of cultural heritage and the threats it faces.

This involves fostering partnerships, dialogue, and collaboration with indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and local stakeholders to ensure that their voices are heard and their interests are represented in decision-making processes.

Our Culture Is Our Pride Essay 500 Words In English

Culture is the heartbeat of a nation, the rhythm that resonates through the centuries, shaping the identity and pride of its people. In the diverse tapestry of humanity, each thread is a unique culture, contributing to the rich mosaic of global heritage. This essay explores the profound significance of culture as the bedrock of our identity, underscoring the notion that “Our Culture Is Our Pride.”

At its core, culture encompasses the collective expressions of a society — its language, traditions, rituals, arts, and values. It is the shared knowledge passed down from generation to generation, a living testament to a people’s history, struggles, triumphs, and evolution. In understanding the importance of culture, we find the roots that anchor us to our past while providing the nourishment for our growth.

One of the primary reasons why our culture is our pride lies in its ability to foster a sense of belonging and unity among individuals. Whether through festivals that celebrate shared beliefs or through the communal experience of storytelling, culture weaves the social fabric that binds communities together. This unity is not merely a sentimental connection; it is a source of strength and resilience in the face of challenges.

Moreover, culture serves as a repository of wisdom, encapsulating the collective knowledge of a people. Through folklore, proverbs, and traditional practices, cultures pass down invaluable lessons about human nature, morality, and sustainable coexistence. This reservoir of wisdom becomes a guide, shaping the ethical foundations of societies and providing a compass for navigating the complexities of the modern world.

Art, another vibrant facet of culture, stands as a testament to human creativity and expression. From literature to visual arts, music to dance, every culture produces unique forms of artistic expression that mirror its soul. This diversity not only enriches the global cultural landscape but also fosters mutual understanding and appreciation among different societies.

Language, as a carrier of culture, is a powerful tool that encapsulates the essence of a people’s identity. The nuances of expression, idioms, and colloquialisms, all contribute to the distinctiveness of a culture. Preserving and celebrating linguistic diversity is not merely an academic pursuit; it is an acknowledgment of the kaleidoscope of human thought and experience.

However, the pride in our culture should not transmute into an exclusionary mindset. Embracing the richness of one’s own culture does not imply dismissing or belittling others. True cultural pride is inclusive, recognizing the value of diversity and promoting dialogue between different traditions. In doing so, we foster a global community that cherishes the uniqueness of each culture while finding common ground in our shared humanity.

In conclusion, our culture is undeniably our pride, serving as the compass, the bond, and the expression of our collective identity. It is a source of strength, wisdom, and beauty that shapes our past, guides our present, and illuminates our path into the future. As stewards of this cultural heritage, we bear the responsibility to celebrate, preserve, and share the richness of our diverse traditions, recognizing that in unity and understanding, we find the true strength of our shared humanity.

Our Culture is Our Pride Essay

Our Culture is Our Pride Essay: Culture plays a significant role in shaping the identity of individuals and communities. It encompasses a wide range of aspects, including language, traditions, customs, art, music, and values. In this essay, we delve into the importance of culture and how it contributes to our collective pride. Our rich and diverse cultural heritage serves as a source of inspiration and unity, fostering a sense of belonging and creating a unique identity that sets us apart from others.

The Significance of Culture

Defining Culture

Culture can be defined as the shared patterns of behavior and beliefs that are passed down from generation to generation within a community or society. It encompasses various elements, such as language, customs, rituals, traditions, arts, and social norms. These components form the foundation of a society’s identity, shaping the way its members think, communicate, and interact with one another.

Cultural Identity and Belonging

Culture plays a vital role in shaping our individual and collective identities. It provides us with a sense of belonging and helps us understand our place in the world. Cultural practices and traditions bind people together, creating a shared history and heritage that instills a sense of pride and unity. Embracing our cultural identity allows us to appreciate our roots, celebrate diversity, and foster inclusivity within society.

Preserving and Celebrating Diversity

One of the remarkable aspects of culture is its ability to celebrate and preserve diversity. Each culture possesses unique traditions, art forms, and perspectives that contribute to the tapestry of human experience. By preserving and celebrating diverse cultural expressions, we enrich our understanding of the world and promote tolerance and respect for different backgrounds and beliefs.

Cultural Heritage and Artistic Expression

Art as a Reflection of Culture

Art has long been a powerful medium for expressing cultural values and ideas. From ancient cave paintings to modern masterpieces, art reflects the essence of a society and its cultural heritage. Through various art forms, such as painting, sculpture, music, dance, and literature, we can convey our stories, emotions, and beliefs to future generations. Artistic expression allows us to bridge gaps, transcend language barriers, and connect on a deeper level, fostering a sense of shared humanity.

Cultural Festivals and Events

Cultural festivals and events are vibrant manifestations of our rich heritage. They bring communities together, providing a platform for showcasing traditional music, dance, costumes, and culinary delights. These celebrations serve as a reminder of our cultural roots, strengthening our bond with our heritage and reinforcing a sense of pride in our shared identity. By participating in cultural festivals, we not only preserve our traditions but also create opportunities for intercultural exchange and dialogue.

Education and Cultural Awareness

Integrating Culture in Education

Education plays a pivotal role in promoting cultural awareness and understanding. By incorporating cultural elements into the curriculum, we can nurture a generation that appreciates and respects diversity. Teaching history, literature, and art from different cultures cultivates empathy, broadens perspectives, and encourages critical thinking. It equips students with the knowledge and skills to engage with the global community while valuing their own cultural heritage.

Cultural Exchange Programs

Cultural exchange programs offer invaluable opportunities for individuals to immerse themselves in different cultural environments. Whether through student exchange programs, internships, or volunteering abroad, these experiences promote cross-cultural understanding, tolerance, and personal growth. By engaging in cultural exchange, individuals develop a deeper appreciation for diversity, gain new perspectives, and form lifelong connections that transcend borders.

In conclusion, culture forms the backbone of our society and serves as a source of pride and identity. Our cultural heritage, artistic expressions, and educational initiatives all contribute to the preservation and celebration of our diverse backgrounds. By embracing our cultural identity, fostering inclusivity, and encouraging intercultural dialogue, we can build a more harmonious and interconnected world. Let us cherish our culture, for it is our pride.

Essays about Culture and Identity: 9 Examples And Prompts

Writing essays about culture and identity will help you explore your understanding of it. Here are examples that will give you inspiration for your next essay.

Culture can refer to customs, traditions, beliefs, lifestyles, laws, artistic expressions, and other elements that cultivate the collective identity. Different cultures are established across nations, regions, communities, and social groups. They are passed on from generation to generation while others evolve or are abolished to give way to modern beliefs and systems.

While our cultural identity begins at home, it changes as we involve ourselves with other groups (friends, educational institutions, social media communities, political groups, etc.) Culture is a very relatable subject as every person is part of a culture or at least can identify with one. Because it spans broad coverage, there are several interesting cultural subjects to write about.

Our culture and identity are dynamic. This is why you may find it challenging to write about it. To spark your inspiration, check out our picks of the best culture essays.

“… [A]nd when every man may say what he likes, our aspirations ought to be satisfied. But the aspirations of culture, which is the study of perfection, are not satisfied, unless what men say, when they may say what they like, is worth saying,—has good in it, and more good than bad.”

Arnolds compels a re-examination of values at a time when England is leading global industrialization and beginning to believe that greatness is founded on material progress.

The author elaborates why culture, the strive for a standard of perfection, is not merely driven by scientific passions and, more so, by materialistic affluence. As he esteems religion as “that voice of the deepest human experience” to harmonize men in establishing that ideal society, Arnolds stresses that culture is the effort to “make reason and the will of God prevail” while humanizing gained knowledge to be society’s source of “sweetness and light.”

“Few innovations in sound production have been simultaneously so reviled and so revolutionary. Epoch-defining or epoch-defacing, Auto-Tune is indisputably the sound of the 21st century so far.”

Reynolds shows how Auto-Tune has shaped a pop music genre that has cut across cultures. The article maps out the music landscape Auto-Tune created and examines its impact on the culture of song productions and the modern taste for music. While the author debunks accusations that Auto-Tune destroyed the “natural” process of creating music, he also points out that the technology earned its reverence with big thanks to society’s current custom of using technology to hide blemishes and other imperfections.

“… [T]he heavy immigration that countries like Italy are experiencing will almost certainly birth new kinds of Italian that are rich with slang, somewhat less elaborate than the standard, and… widely considered signs of linguistic deterioration, heralding a future where the “original” standard language no longer exists.”

American linguist McWhorter pacifies fears over the death of “standard” languages amid the wave of immigration to Europe. On the contrary, language is a vital expression of a culture, and for some, preserving is tantamount to upholding a cultural standard.

However, instead of seeing the rise of new “multiethnolects” such as the Black English in America and Kiezdeutsch in Germany as threats to language and culture, McWhorter sees them as a new way to communicate and better understand the social groups that forayed these new languages.

“I wonder why “cartoonish” remains such a pejorative. It took me half my life to achieve seeing my parents as cartoons. And to become more perfectly a cartoon myself: what a victory that would be.”

This essay begins with a huge fight between Franzen’s brother and father to show how the cultural generation gap sweeping the 60s has hit closer to home. This generation gap, where young adults were rejecting the elders’ old ways in pursuit of a new and better culture, will also be the reason why his family ends up drifting apart. Throughout the essay, Franzen treads this difficult phase in his youth while narrating fondly how Peanuts, a pop culture icon at the time, was his source of escape.

“…Culture is… your background… and Identity is formed where you belong to… Leopold Sedar Senghor and Shirley Geok-Lin Lim both talks about how culture and identity can impact… society…”

In this essay, Graham uses “To New York” by Senghor and “Learning To Love America” by Lim as two pieces of literature that effectively describe the role of culture and identity to traveling individuals.

The author refers to Sengho’s reminder that people can adapt but must not forget their culture even if they go to a different place or country. On the other hand, Lim discusses immigrants’ struggle to have double identities.

“Culture is something that surrounds all of us and progress to shape our lives every day… Identity is illustrated as the state of mind in which someone or something distinguishes their own character traits that lead to determining who they really are, what they represent.”

Lucas is keen on giving examples of how his culture and surroundings influence an individual’s identity. She refers to Kothari’s “If you are what you eat, then what am I?” which discusses Kothari’s search for her identity depending on what food she eats. Food defines a person’s culture and identity, so Kothari believes that eating food from different countries will change his identity.

Lucas also refers to “Down These Mean Streets” by Piri Thomas, which argues how different cultural and environmental factors affect us. Because of what we encounter, there is a possibility that we will become someone who we are not.

“What we grow is who we are. What we buy is who we are. What we eat is who we are.”

Stephens’ essay teaches its readers that the food we grow and eat defines us as a person. She explains that growing a crop and harvesting it takes a lot of effort, dedication, and patience, which mirrors our identity.

Another metaphor she used is planting rice: it takes skills and knowledge to make it grow. Cooking rice is more accessible than cultivating it – you can quickly cook rice by boiling it in water. This reflects people rich in culture and tradition but who lives simpler life.

“Every single one has their own unique identity and culture. Culture plays a big role in shaping your identity. Culture is what made me the person I am today and determines who or what I choose to associate myself with.”

Casas starts her piece by questioning who she is. In trying to learn and define who she is, she writes down and describes herself and her personality throughout the essay. Finally, she concludes that her culture is a big part of her identity, and she must understand it to understand herself.

“When it comes to these stereotypes we place on each other, a lot of the time, we succumb to the stereotypes given to us. And our cultural identity is shaped by these expectations and labels others give us. That is why negative stereotypes sometimes become true for a whole group or community.”

In this essay, Luna talks about how negative stereotyping in the United States led to moral distortion. For example, Americans are assumed to be ignorant of other countries’ cultures, making it difficult to understand other people’s cultures and lifestyles.

She believes that stereotyping can significantly affect an individual or group’s identity. She suggests Americans should improve their intellectual competence by being sensitive to other people’s cultures.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 100 words

India is a country with a very different population , as well as many different languages and ways of life. In the north are the icy peaks of the Himalayas, and in the north and south are thick forests and rich plains.  We have 29 states, and these states are home to many different groups of people who speak many different languages. Even within each language, there are many different ways to say things . I’d say that India is a great country that is making great strides in all areas of economic growth.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 200 words

There are many different parts to a country, and they all contribute in their own way to the country’s greatness. Culture is one of the most important things that makes a country great, so don’t underestimate its importance. Similarly, the vibrant culture of our country, India, makes a big difference in the overall health of the country. The fact that our society is political has helped India’s many different religious traditions, groups, and regions of the world live together in a way that is truly amazing.

All of these things add to the richness and scope of the Indian cultural tradition. India’s different social and economic groups all add value to their own cultural traditions to make the country culturally diverse, rich, and, most importantly, “unified . ” Even though other parts of our country have had both highs and lows in recent years, the important royal approach has stayed mostly the same for a long time. Our culture includes a lot of different kinds of art , as well as literary and interior design traditions and many different kinds of parties. Our country’s respectable place in the world is being pushed to new heights by the rich culture we have here. So, we can come to the conclusion that our culture is, without a doubt, where our pride comes from.

our culture our pride essay in 300 words

I wouldn’t have known how much I loved my culture if I hadn’t been away from it for so long. During one academic year , my university holds two events that are meant to show how many different cultures are represented on campus . So, when the International Festival is getting close, everyone gets really excited.

Simply put, we dress in a variety of ways, including our traditional clothes and other clothes with cultural meaning, to make sure that our cultural identity is properly shown. If someone asks us about one of our traditional practices, we jump right in with enthusiasm to explain what it means, and the fact that our uniqueness is being recognized in this way is something we really value.

If I didn’t live so far from home, I wouldn’t think as much about wearing a sari to an international festival or “Cholo and Fariya” to international events. But moving to a new country has made me realize more than I did before how important my background is . This is most likely because our culture is the only way we can stand out in a group of people from all over the world.

Our Culture is our pride Essa

We go beyond our customs and traditions because we want to stand out from other people. These things then become a part of who we are. So, showing how diverse and rich our ancestry is makes us feel proud of ourselves as individuals.  Even if we didn’t realize it when we were writing that essay for points in middle school, we do now: in a foreign country, our identity is based on our culture , and we feel proud when we show it off in a big way.

Even though we didn’t realize it when we were writing that essay for points in middle school, we do know that our identity in a foreign country is based on our culture. So, I can say with complete honesty that Our Culture is Where Our Pride Comes From.

Our Culture is our pride Essay 500 Words (essay on our culture our pride for class 9)

My birthplace , India, is one of the most amazing and diverse countries in the world, and I count it as one of my greatest fortunes to have been allowed to call it home . Because it is also the largest secular republic in the world, I have the opportunity to personally engage with people of a wide variety of racial and cultural backgrounds.

It is a very large country with a diverse population and a landscape that ranges from the towering Himalayas in the north to the broad Indian Ocean in the south. It is located in South Asia. It also boasts a very significant number of flora and fauna, making it home to an extremely diverse array of both. Additionally, India is well-known for the range of cuisines and spices that it produces.

There are a total of thirty-one rivers, in addition to twenty-eight states and nine union territories. India is not only the most populous democracy but also the most diverse. Diwali, Eid, Christmas, and Guru Parwa are just some of the holidays that are celebrated throughout the year in India, despite the fact that India is officially recognized as a secular nation .

India has a long history of progress in the fields of science, farming, and literature. We were light years ahead of other countries when it came to scientific progress. There has been a lot of progress in medicine, science, and technology both in the past and now. We make almost anything you can think of and export a wide range of goods, such as industrial goods, medicines, and so on. In the agricultural sector, you can find beautiful churches, mosques, and other places of worship. The Taj Mahal has been called the “eighth wonder of the world.” The Red Fort, the Charminar, and many other old buildings are also worth seeing.

We have a lot of problems, even though we have all of these things that we should be proud of. Poverty and illiteracy are common, and there is a big difference between the wealth of the rich and the rest of the population. Unemployment is another big problem that makes the gap between the population that has been cut in half and the population that has not been cut in half even bigger.

Pollution was another problem we had to deal with. Urbanization, population growth, and a higher population density all led to more pollution. Along with the smoke from factories, the smoke from cars is another source of pollution that makes a living in the city a nightmare. In addition, the nation has been endowed with illustrious historical mathematicians and distinctive works of architecture. Both Ramanujam and Aryabhata are widely renowned for their contributions to mathematics, including continuing fractions and the discovery of zero.

As a citizen of this country, I consider myself fortunate and honored to be a part of the rich cultural diversity that exists here. I have a deep appreciation for the United States of America, and one day when I’m older, I wish to be able to make a positive contribution to the nation’s.

Culture represents the ways of living that are built up by groups and transmitted from one generation to another.

Culture isn’t static. People adapt to changing climate, new inventions and influences from other people and other cultures.

This chapter will consider what culture means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and how their connection to culture continues today.

You sometimes hear people say that ‘real’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures no longer exist because we no longer live like our ancestors, using traditional hunting implements and the like. This makes about as much sense as saying that English culture no longer exists because English people don’t live as they did before the industrial revolution.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have adapted dramatically to accommodate all that has been introduced into Australia since 1788. First Australians have proved to be rich and resilient. It is a strong part of who we are and it is a strong part of the Australian identity.

It is important for all Australians to understand the essential features of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including our special connection to the land and our commitment to family and community—so we can walk on this land together as friends and equals, so you can share our pride.

Understanding and respecting our cultures also gives you a better sense of the impact on our communities when life-sustaining structures are ignored or broken, as they have been and continue to be.

write short essay about our culture our pride

‘Dreaming’ or ‘Dreamtime’ are English words that describe a rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander concept. In reality, it is impossible to find words that adequately capture this core element of who we are but it’s something you feel when you sit with us on our country and hear our stories with an open mind and heart.

Dreaming is more than a mythical past; it prescribes our connection as Aboriginal people with the spiritual essence of everything around us and beyond us. Dreaming stories are not in the past, they are outside of time – always present and giving meaning to all aspects of life.

Across Australia, we have different words for this concept, including Tjukurpa in central Australia, Bugari in Broome, and Wongar in north-east Arnhem Land. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people prefer the use of the word Dreaming over Dreamtime.

The Dreaming is passed from generation to generation through stories, song, dance and art. This knowledge gives us special responsibility and is seen as a great honour.

For example, when we are taught a story or song about the travels of ancient creation spirits and ancestors from water-hole to water-hole, we become the holder of this essential knowledge.

The concept of Aboriginal Dreaming has been described as:

  • The veil separating physical life from existence outside of physical life is far less distinct and far more permeable than that experienced by non-Indigenous peoples.
  • The collective knowledge and wisdom of the grandparents and great-grandparents in their living state are absorbed into the collective ‘resource bank’ when they pass on into death.

Preserving language

English translation:

Hello everyone, how are you? My name is Djapirri Mununggirritj. The language I speak is Gumatj and I am from Arnhem Land. With this language our law is strong and our foundation is strong. And with this foundation we move forward and with our language of who we are as Yolngu people it makes us strong so that when we take our culture to the unknown world. We still stay strong and with that we can share our culture with the non-Yolngu culture and do the things together as we come from a background that is very different to yours, but at the same time we are sharing the culture to the non-Yolngu. This is the reason why as Yolngu, we want to start on the journey so we can enable ourselves to walk with non-Yolngu and share culture. We hope for better things to happen in Australia if we work together hand in hand.

Our language

Language identifies who we are and where we come from. We use the languages we speak to express all that we feel and know. When we lose a language, we lose the unique knowledge and perspectives of the people that speak it. For tens of thousands of years, hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages have been spoken across Australia. These languages hold a unique and rich part of our heritage.

Studies show that there were about 250 Aboriginal languages in Australia at the time Europeans arrived. These distinct languages had extensive vocabularies and complex grammars. Today, 145 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages are still spoken in Australia, however only 18 remain strong, meaning they are spoken by people of all ages.

As much of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history has been passed down orally it is important to the nation that these languages are preserved.

“When you on Country, you walk with a spring in your step, you walk with your head high, you not afraid of anything. In order to find yourself you have to get lost. Best place to get lost is Country.” William Watson, Yiriman Cultural Boss

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are connected to country through lines of descent (paternal and maternal), as well as clan and language groups.

Although in the past (and sometimes into the present) there have been conflicts between different tribal groups, these were rarely over land. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have such a strong sense of belonging to country; they have no desire to own the land of others.

Territory is defined by spiritual as well as physical links. Landforms have deep meaning, recorded in art, stories, songs and dance. Songlines or Dreaming Tracks as well as [Kinship structures] link Indigenous peoples to the territories of other groups. In the past, these links were also used for trade.

“When we say country we might mean homeland, or tribal or clan area and in saying so we may mean something more than just a place; somewhere on the map. We are not necessarily referring to place in a geographical sense. But we are talking about the whole of the landscape, not just the places on it. ” Professor Mick Dodson AM, United Nations International Expert Group Meeting on Indigenous Peoples and Protection of the Environment, Khabarovsk, Russian Federation, August 2007

The environment

Australians of today are deeply concerned about environment issues like global warming. Surviving on this land for more than 60,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders established effective ways to use and sustain resources.  One important aspect is the right of certain people to control the use of resources in a particular area. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people don’t see themselves as ‘owning’ land, animals, plants or nature, but rather belonging with these things as equal parts of creation.

“I am an Aboriginal woman who has been brought up in a European world. I am Aboriginal in body, heart, soul and spirit. I cherish the culture that is passed on to me by my elders, particularly my mother, aunties and uncles. I have been brought up to believe that we have a special connection to the land. We belong to the land. The land does not belong to us.”  Cassandra Lawton Gungarri woman (SW Qld)

The rights of different groups to live in and manage certain areas of land are clear and recorded through art, stories, songs and dance.

Deep cultural and spiritual values like totemism have also played an important part in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resource management. Totemism is a belief and value system that connects human beings to other animals, plants and aspects of nature. Groups and individuals are assigned a particular animal that they are related to and have to care for. This gives them a profound sense of connection to and responsibility for the natural world.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people have a wide range of traditional methods for gathering food – including fish traps, subsistence agriculture, hunting and harvesting a wide range of natural fruits and vegetables. Some groups of people would stay in one place, while others moved around the land according to the seasons, to ensure sustainable and rich food supplies, and to fulfil their spiritual and cultural obligations.

Customary law

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have complex codes of conduct to guide people’s behaviour. Today, every Australian is answerable to Australia’s laws. Traditional or customary law in no way substitutes for Australian law but it can coexist and guide a community on how to behave according to traditional beliefs and practices.

In the same way, Jewish people in Australia follow particular religious laws around diet, ceremony and behaviour while they also abide by our nation’s laws.

In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, codes of conduct cover behaviour around:

  • Leadership and etiquette
  • Laws around special events like marriage, coming of age and death
  • Sacred knowledge

Even before 1788 there were complex relationships for long distance trade between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities especially for coastal shells and stone hatchets. When people from different groups met socially to share resources, for ceremonies or to settle disputes, they brought items to exchange. Items included stones for axes, kangaroo skins, timber for spears, ochre or clay for paint and marine shells for decoration. In Queensland, a major trade item was a narcotic known as pituri, which was a hunger and pain suppressant.

The exchange of objects was not motivated by a desire for wealth accumulation but a social system to build connection between people and groups.

Communities in northern parts of Australia traded with people from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. For example, Macassans collected beche-de-mer (trepang) and trochus through trade with mainland Aboriginal people. Torres Strait Islanders had trading relationships with the people of both mainland Australia and Papua New Guinea. The latter was crucial as a source of heavy timber for sailing canoes.

Our culture our pride

Our culture our pride

Home » Blog » Our culture our pride

When I was in middle- School, our teacher used to ask us to write an essay on topics like the national animal, the national bird, the national festival and the culture of various athnic groups. In our Nepali text books, we read poems of Laxmi Prasad Devkota, and I vividly remember one of his essay that described Nepal, it resources and its culture. “4 castes with 36 sub-castes under one umbrella” used to be what I wrote in almost all of my attempts to describe Nepal. Today, I am proud that I was born to a culture that rich and living here in the U.S. has made me realize even more the diversity of our nation.

According to visitnepal.com, Nepal has over 40 different ethnic groups and tribes. From the popular and brave Sherpas of the Himalayans, to the Brahmans and Chhetris of the Kathmandu valley, and to the Tharus of the South, Nepal is composed of numerous ethnic identities. The Taute’s are another tribe of Nepal, who live the nomadic life and travel from one place to another within the western region of Nepal, I looking for shelter and food.

Today, the Kathmandu valley has become the melting pot, as it is the most developed part of the nation. While I was in Nepal during this past summer, I heard people on the streets talking in unfamiliar languages. Lot of people have migrated from the rural areas to live in the city. And the beauty of this diversity is that we are all under one common roof, and though we have different cultural identities, we are all Nepalese.

I may have not realized how much I value my culture if wasn’t away from it. In my collage, we have two functions in one academic year that are for representation of international diversity on campus. Hence, we all get so excited for the International Festival. We wear our traditional dresses, and dress in different cultural attires, just so that we can give justice to our cultural identity. When people ask us about any of our traditional practices we jump in with excitement to explain what it means, and difference in this context is highly appreciated.

If I wasn’t far away from home, I would care less about dressing in a sari for the international festival, or I would care less about wearing “Cholo and Fariya” to present myself in any international functions, coming to a foreign land has accentuated the value of my culture. This is probably because, the only way we can distinct we in this place filled with people from all parts of the world is through our culture. Our norms and traditions become our identification, and it is the need to stand out that pushes us further. So exposing the variation and diversity of our roots makes us proud to be who we are. Even though we may have not realized it when we were writing that essay in middle school for mere points, we do realize it now that in a foreign land our identity rests upon our culture and pride is what we get when we portray it exuberantly. Therefore, I can honestly say Our culture, Our Pride.

Essay on our Culture our Pride

Our Nepali Culture Is Our Pride

A long-standing tradition is called culture .  It is a sign of the ideas way of life, etc. which is being developed in the form of internal tradition of Nepalese. Nepali culture encompasses many aspects of our lives. Our culture is diverse and our country is a community in terms of culture. Our culture is the basis of our identity or pride.

our culture our pride

Different castes live in our society. Festivals are also celebrated according to different cultures. According to the tradition of the past, Nepali society is moving forward by uniting and assimilating. Nepalese of Hindu religion and culture celebrate various festivals in a grand manner. They celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Holi, Chath, ShreePanchami, Mahashivratri, Gurupurnima, Maghe Sankranti, Tirtha Aussi, New Year etc. and other small festivals with enthusiasm. It is a good practice in Hinduism to consider the Guru as a deity and to respect the elders and to give love and affection to the younger ones. The identity of our Nepali culture is the main basis. We Nepaleses have been respecting these traditional values and practices.

In today's Nepali society, there are people who believe in Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. Even those religions and cultures are being influenced by traditional Hindu religions and cultures and today Nepali culture has moved forward with cultural diversity. This cultural diversity is the identity or pride of our culture.

People of all religions living in our country wear their own style of dress. The special attire of Nepalese is Daura Suruwal, coat, hat and belt worn by men. Our Nepali women look really attractive and beautiful when women wear beautiful bodice, belts, Ear rings, red scarf on their heads and grandchildren on their cheeks. Our cultural dresses of Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung, Newar, Madhesi have their own kind of discrimination dress and languages. The national flag with the sun and the moon, the national bird, the scarecrow, and the national animal, the cow, are our pride.

From birth to death, Hindus and non-Hindus have their own customs and traditions. Here they are treated with respect and dignity. Many such rites and customs are also the basis of our own originality and identity of Nepalese.

The main thing is that today foreign culture has taken over our culture. Especially today's young men and women are falling prey to foreign lewd culture. We must also be careful to preserve our original culture, which we have inherited from our ancestors. In order to preserve the culture of our ancestors, we must all work together to advance our culture.
