Private School (Fee Paying) Boys 11 - 19 Years Day

Presentation Brothers College celebrates 140th anniversary

Presentation Brothers College celebrates 140th anniversary

PRESENTATION Brothers College, one of Cork’s most successful secondary schools, is this year celebrating its 140th anniversary.

The school boasts an impressive history, both academically and in sporting terms.

The all boys, fee-paying school is regularly praised as one of Ireland’s finest second level establishments.

The college was founded by the Presentation Brothers in 1878, at the South Mall.

Soon afterwards it moved to the Grand Parade and, in 1887, to the Western Road.

The present complex, on Mardyke Walk, was completed in 1985.

The school is regularly at full capacity, with 720 students as well as 60 teachers and staff.

Hard work from the students, mentoring from dedicated teachers and support from family, are all key to the success of the boys, said David Barry, principal of Presentation Brothers College Cork.

“We’re a community, first of all, we all work together which is one of the most important things,” said Mr Barry.

“As principal, I manage the day to day running of the school. We have two deputy principals, one for the senior and for the junior schools,” he added.

“We also have a great middle management team, year heads and fantastic teachers, who all work to the best of their ability to ensure the boys have the best education they can possibly have here.”

As well as an educational structure, Mr Barry said the school works to ensure the boys are also cared for holistically.

“We have a really caring community, the boys are really looked after,” he said.

“We have a chaplain, two guidance counsellors, one for the senior school, one for the juniors.

“There’s also great student leadership within the school, which is great for student voice, an important aspect of the school,” he added.

“We have 6th-year peer mentors and prefects. It’s about giving the boys the opportunity to get involved.

“Once they’re happy, they’re able to learn,” explained Mr Barry.

Learning is certainly a key part of any school, but this is emphasised when that school is famed for its success at sending students on to third level.

“There’s an expectation and our aim is to always meet that expectation,” said Mr Barry.

“For us, we pride ourselves on the academic record in the school and there’s always that focus.

“We want the boys to thrive, realise their potential and for our record to continue,” he added.

“Many of the boys view third level as a natural progression and they work hard towards that.”

However, Presentation Brothers’ also boast a strong reputation in sports and extra-curricular activities such as debating.

“A large part of our school is extra-curricular,” said Mr Barry.

“We offer rugby, soccer, rowing, debating, GAA, golf and tennis, a wide range of activities in the school.

“It’s about giving the boys a wide range of educational opportunities, not just academic,” he added.

“They will thrive when they’re doing other things like sports as it opens their mind.”

The school has received national attention for its success on the rugby pitch.

In 1974, An Post issued two commemorative stamps to mark the centenary of the foundation of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

The two stamps feature the same photograph, showing three Irish International players, Barry McGann, Colin Grimshaw and Donal Canniffe. McGann (class of 1976) and Canniffe (class of 1977) were both PBC boys, while Grimshaw was a Queen’s University, Belfast player.

“The students need something different, something outside of the academics,” said Mr Barry.

“Sport and extra-curricular activities give them the opportunity to get involved in the school community, experience new things and meet new people in other schools, whether that’s through rugby, GAA or debating.”

Appointed as principal just over 12 months ago, Mr Barry said it has certainly been a year to remember.

“The highlight was being appointed as principal and from then, getting the opportunity to work with the staff and students.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees for the academic year may be found at https://www.presentation.edu/tuition-aid .

At Presentation College the payment of tuition, fees and all other charges are recorded on the student billing account at the time of registration. An electronic billing statement will be available through the student portal at the time of registration and will itemize student payment obligations to the College including but not limited to the following: tuition, room, board, course fees, and any other charges. The billing statement will also itemize any credits known at that time which are due to the student for the term, such as grant or loan aid, the deposit made, etc. Any changes in the student’s obligations, caused by a change in schedule or in aid for the term, will be itemized on the student’s electronic ledger available through the student portal. It is the students' responsibility to check their ledger periodically throughout the term.

All students are required to sign a Disclosure Statement. The form is available online at  https://www.presentation.edu/tuition-aid/student-accounts/payment-forms , it must be completed and submitted to the office of Student Accounts prior to beginning classes. Failure to complete this form will result in a HOLD being placed on the student’s account and will prevent future registration or release of transcripts. The Disclosure Statement contains the official explanation of the College's payment policies.

Students are expected to pay any balance due to the College by the first day of classes. The balance due is calculated based on the term charges less payments made to date and less the pending financial aid shown on the statement. Any Student with a remaining balance after the first day of classes will be auto enrolled in a Payment Plan. All balances are subject to change until the last day to add/drop of the term, fines/fees may be added at any point in the term as needed. Students must make their tuition deposit (non-refundable) and suite deposit prior to moving on campus, participating in practice (as a student-athlete) or attending class. Administrative, clerical, or technical billing errors do not absolve the student of financial responsibility to pay the correct amount of tuition, fees and other associated financial obligations assessed as a result of registration at Presentation College.

Financial aid will be posted to students' accounts within three (3) days of receipt of the funds from the U.S. Department of Education. If a student's payments, including financial aid, exceed the charges shown on the statement, the student will have a credit balance and will be issued a refund within 14 days of the date financial aid funds are received by the College. Students are encouraged to complete a form (available at  https://www.presentation.edu/tuition-aid/student-accounts , under “Helpful Forms”) for automatic deposit of their refund checks in order to receive the refund as quickly as possible. Refunds not made by automatic deposit will be mailed to the student's billing address on record.

Presentation College offers the benefit of a payment plan. A $60 payment plan service fee is charged to all participating accounts for the calculation and maintenance of the plan. The payment plan breaks the original balance due for the term plus the payment plan fee into three monthly expected payments, two monthly expected payments in the summer term.

Fall Term: September 15 th Payment Due: half of the original balance due plus the payment plan service fee October 15 th Payment Due: 50% of the current balance due November 15 th Payment Due: the remaining balance for the term

Spring Term: February 15 th Payment Due: half of the original balance due plus the payment plan service fee March 15 th Payment Due: 50% of the current balance due April 15 th Payment Due: the remaining balance for the term

Summer Term: June 15 th Payment Due: half of the original balance due plus the payment plan service fee July 15 th Payment Due: the remaining balance for the term

This breakdown is calculated by the Manager of Student Accounts and is communicated to all students at the beginning of the term to their PC emails. Students who fail to pay any balance due at the specified time each month will incur a $25 late fee and a finance charge of two percent (2%), this includes any delinquent or alternative payment plan agreements. Accounts with balances after the first day of classes will be auto enrolled in the payment plan.

Students with unpaid balances with the College will have a HOLD placed on their account. A HOLD means the College will not issue degrees, transcripts, employment placement credentials, final grade reports, or statements of honorable dismissal. Students with business holds may also not be permitted to register for subsequent terms.

Students who fail to pay any balance due at the specified time may be administratively withdrawn from the College. Delinquent accounts may be transferred to a collection agency; fees for this service will be added to students' accounts.

Students who fail to pay any balance due at the specified time each month, or another agreed upon time, may have their Moodle access suspended. A suspension will remain on the student's Moodle account until the amount due is paid. If lack of payment continues the student may be administratively withdrawn from the term. In the case of administrative withdrawal due to an unpaid account, a grade of “W” will be recorded on the student’s transcript.

During the time in which Moodle access is suspended, faculty have the purview to uphold late work policies, as stated in course syllabi. Faculty are not required to provide special allowances to accommodate students during the period that Moodle access is suspended.

Withdrawing from a course within the publicized add/drop refund period

Students who wish to withdraw from a registered course and receive a tuition/fees adjustment must initiate the necessary process with their academic advisor. In some cases, financial aid that has been awarded or disbursed to the student may require adjustment.

Withdrawing from a course after the publicized deadline for a refund

Students who wish to withdraw from a scheduled course after the publicized add/drop period must complete the necessary process with their academic advisor. In some cases, financial aid that has been awarded or disbursed to the student may require adjustment.

Withdrawal from College

Official withdrawals.

Students who wish to withdraw from the College must contact their academic advisor or the Registrar's Office.

When students officially withdraw from the College or stop attending all of their classes during the early weeks of the semester, they may be eligible to be assessed only a percentage of costs assessed for the term; they may also be eligible to retain a percentage of their federal, state and institutional financial aid to assist them with the payment of their costs due to the College.

Students must officially withdraw by using the appropriate forms and completing the withdrawal process. When students complete the official withdrawal process, the date on which the withdrawal form is received is used to determine the percentage of tuition and other account charges the College will assess. Students who wish to withdraw from the College should contact their advisor or the Registrar’s Office and complete the official withdrawal process.

If an amount owed is still owed after withdrawal, the payment must be received, or payment arrangements must be made within 30 days of notification of the withdrawal date or the student's account will be considered delinquent.

College Initiated Withdrawals

The College reserves the right to administratively withdraw a student for reasons such as non-payment, disciplinary, academic, lack of engagement, or other extenuating circumstances.

Unofficial Withdrawals

When it is not possible for students to complete the official withdrawal process or they stop attending their classes without providing notice, the College will determine their withdrawal date once the College becomes aware that a student is no longer attending classes.

The Official withdrawal date will be determined in one of the following ways:

  • The date the student began the process or official notified the College of intent to withdraw; or
  • The midpoint of the semester for a student who leaves without notifying the College; or
  • The student’s last date of an academic related activity

The following account charges are eligible for proration ("COSTS ELIGIBLE FOR PRORATION"):

  • Housing charge (prorated per day until the last day to drop (Full Term))
  • Meal plan (prorated per meal until the last day to drop (Full Term))

The following account charges are not eligible for proration and are assessed at 100%:

  • Program fees
  • Online per hour fee
  • New student fee
  • Course fees
  • Disciplinary fines
  • Housing fines
  • Books purchased in the online Bookstore
  • Library fines
  • Supplies purchased in the Saints Stop
  • Clinical makeup fees
  • Laptop rental/purchase through the College
  • Challenge exam fees
  • Parking fines
  • Transcript fees
  •   Tuition deposit

Proration Dates

The FAO performs a calculation of return of Title IV funds that is separate from the College refund calculation. That policy is in the Financial Aid Office section of the College Catalog.

Refer to the institutional policy on students called to active duty under Academic Policies, Active Duty .

A college or university that received qualified tuition and related expenses on your behalf is required to file Form 1098-T with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).  Educational institutions are required to file and furnish a Form 1098-T to students whom payments for qualified billed tuition and related expenses were received in the calendar year.  The information being reported to the IRS verifies your enrollment with regard to certain eligibility criteria for the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit and the Higher Education Tuition and Fees Deduction. However, the enrollment information by itself does not establish eligibility for either credit or deduction. Students will receive their 1098-T statement electronically, no paper 1098-T statement will be mailed. When statements are ready, an email will be sent to students with instructions on how to access 1098-T statement online.

Tuition & Affordability

AFFORDING PRESENTATION

Economic diversity is an important goal at Presentation. Our ability to attract students from a broad array of economic backgrounds helps us provide a richer educational and social experience for our school community. Approximately 30% of our current families pay tuition below the top of the tuition scale, making a Presentation education accessible to a wide range of economic circumstances.

Inclusive Tuition Model

Presentation’s inclusive tuition model ensures all families that virtually all supplemental costs are accounted for in the price of tuition, scholastic and registration fees. Including these costs up-front allows families to plan effectively and avoid incurring additional fees after enrollment.

What's Included:

  • All Scholastic Materials - Presentation does not send out supply lists to families with required academic supplies. Binders, folders, paper, pencils and all scholastic materials are provided, as well as all curriculum textbooks, workbooks, and online access to school subscriptions.
  • Student’s 1-1 Technology - Individual tech devices including educational software, applications, and technical support are provided to each student. Presentation has a 1-1 iPad program in grades K-2 and a 1-1 Chromebook program in grades 3-8.
  • All K-8 Day Trips - Field Trips are integral to an interactive and engaging academic program. Presentation students participate in many field trips throughout the year and the costs of these day trips are accounted for in the standard tuition rate.
  • Extensive Specialist Class Resources - All Presentation students participate in an holistic academic program that includes Art, Music, PE, and Spanish. Our classes are well-resourced with engaging activities and supplies to make meaningful contact with new knowledge and perspectives.
  • Community Events - Our students participate in many exciting on-campus learning and community-building activities such as hosting African authors to teach our students about African storytelling, re-enacting the American Revolution and much more!

The Middle School Fee (6-8) includes:

  • Middle School Athletic League Participation - Students are supplied with athletics equipment, uniforms and all fees associated with participation. All students are encouraged to participate in TPS athletics, both those interested in exploring a new sport as a beginner, or as a seasoned athlete.
  • Performing & Visual Arts Participation - Presentation takes pride in having the most diversified performing and visual arts experiences for students around. Middle School Spring Play, extensive art supplies including clay class, as well as choral performances off campus, Art Show/Spring Sing experiences are included in the tuition.
  • Middle School Leadership Program - Our Middle School Leadership Program, Rising Leaders, meets monthly with two annual day-long field trips. Rising Leaders supports development in leadership skills and community/confidence building to prepare our students for high school and beyond.

Expenses Beyond Tuition:

  • Aftercare (Extended Day) - Aftercare is offered to families from 3:15 - 5:00pm daily at a modest fee that is prorated based on attendance. Please refer to our after-school programs page for current rates and program information.
  • After School ASPIRE Program - Presentation offers a variety of after-school programs throughout our ASPIRE program with three sessions annually. Recent offerings include Toy Making with a local and experienced Toy Maker, French Immersion, Tennis, Clay Class, and Dungeons & Dragons. Each class is priced individually in each session. Please refer to our after-school programs page for current rates and program information.
  • Overnight Class Trips - Overnight field trips in grades 4-8 are an additional expense and the responsibility of each family. Presentation works diligently to manage the expense of these experiences and supports various fundraising efforts to help offset trip costs.

Tuition Assistance Policy

The Board of Trustees and school administration of The Presentation School are committed to providing tuition assistance to our families. The Presentation School’s Tuition Assistance Committee (TAC) is dedicated to four principles when making and communicating tuition assistance decisions - Confidentiality , Objectivity , Fairness , and Equity .

TPS utilizes FACTS Grant & Aid to help determine awards for tuition assistance applicants. TPS requires parents to complete the online FACTS application each year that assistance is requested. Once the application is complete, FACTS verifies the applicant’s information and determines the suggested financial assistance award based on the submitted data and documentation parents provide in the application. In the case of divorced or separated parents, both parents are required to submit an application via FACTS.

The School, through TAC, reviews the application, the FACTS recommendation, and determines the assistance award. In some cases, the school may require additional information from families to best determine the tuition assistance award.

Until TPS’s committee has received the complete FACTS application (which requires you to upload your completed tax returns) and the supporting documentation, it will be unable to process a family’s request for financial assistance.

It is important for families to understand that once available funds for the upcoming year have been allocated, the school does not have the ability to make more funds available than what has already been allotted for tuition assistance. The school may not consider late or incomplete requests for financial assistance.

Prospective families who are considering enrollment, please contact the admissions office for more information on the tuition assistance process.

Returning families requesting tuition assistance are required to complete a FACTS Grant & Aid application every year. The deadlines for 24-25 consideration is March 28th, 2024.

Assistance Award Criteria

The Presentation School is committed to four principles when making and communicating tuition assistance decisions – Confidentiality , Objectivity , Fairness , and Equity .

Tuition Assistance is based primarily on the following criteria:

  • Family’s need as reported by FACTS Grant & Aid Application
  • Review and interpretation of tax returns and other requested supporting documentation.
  • The student’s ability to contribute to and benefit from the school program and community.
  • The family’s ability to contribute to and benefit from the school program and community.
  • Tuition Assistance Funds are available based on applying before the deadline and the school’s annual allocation of funds.

For information regarding our tuition payment schedule, please reach out to our Business Officer. Shanna Rodgers at [email protected].

The Presentation School is proud to be a participating school with the BASIC Fund, a 501(c) 3 organization advancing educational equity for qualifying families through scholarships. To learn more about eligibility requirements click here .

Tuition Rates

The Presentation School’s tuition and fees are set annually by the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees also allocates significant funds annually to support families who apply for and qualify for tuition assistance.

Exchange tips about expat life in Moscow

presentation school cork fees

When I came to Moscow I barely knew anyone, but now I've got dozens of expat contacts from dozens of countries.

Life in Moscow

At a Glance:

  • As the largest and wealthiest city in Russia, Moscow has a lot to offer expats, including a range of international schools and private healthcare facilities.
  • However, this comes at a price — Moscow is also the most expensive city in Russia, and this is especially reflected in accommodation costs and school fees.
  • The city offers a range of public transportation options, meaning you don’t need to brave the busy roads if you don’t want to.
  • The cultural offerings are almost unparalleled, and you can pick from classical ballet, contemporary art, or exploring some of the city’s history.

Moscow is Russia’s capital city and is located in the European part of the country’s vast territory. Currently, the city has more than 12 million inhabitants. It remains the political and economic center of the country, and its cultural life surpasses that of other Russian cities.

The city has a humid continental climate. You are likely to experience a true Russian winter — very long and very cold. Summers, on the other hand, are usually fairly warm, so you will also have the opportunity to enjoy the city in the sunshine

A Wealthy City: Cost of Living in Moscow

According to the 2017 Forbes List, Moscow is only beaten by New York and Hong Kong when it comes to the number of resident billionaires. Although you don’t need to be a billionaire to be able to afford living in Moscow, it certainly doesn’t come cheap.

In the past, Moscow regularly made the top five of the world’s most expensive cities for expats, for example in the Mercer Cost of Living Survey. However, it became more affordable when the Russian ruble lost its value against the US dollar in 2013, and as of 2017 it was ranked 13th in the Mercer survey. Housing, schooling, and medical costs make up the largest chunk of the expat budget.

Finding the Right School in Moscow

Among the first steps for expat families is finding a school to send their children to. Most expats living in Moscow enroll their children in one of the city’s international schools, which may have long waiting lists. It is advisable to contact the school as soon as you know that you will be moving to the Russian capital.

Some expats prefer to send their kids to local public schools in order to fully immerse them in the Russian language and daily life. Education in public schools is free of charge and open to all expat kids living in Moscow. Another advantage of a public school is that it will most likely be very close to your home.

Private Schools: The Solution for Expat Children

Generally, private schools are uncommon in Russia. Those living in Moscow, however, are lucky: even for an expat hot spot, the city has a wide selection of international schools. Children of expats living in Moscow can often choose between studying according to a foreign national curriculum, the Russian national curriculum, or the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. For younger children, many of the private international schools have attached kindergartens and childcare centers.

As mentioned above, international schooling is a major factor contributing to the high cost of life in Moscow. Depending on the school and grade in question, annual tuition fees start at around 5,000 EUR but can be significantly higher. They can also be joined by additional costs, for example an entrance fee or school transport. Fees for kindergartens and childcare centers are usually slightly cheaper. If possible, ensure that schooling for your children is included in your remuneration package by your employer.

In addition to said international schools, many embassies in Moscow organize native-language schooling for children of embassy employees on their own premises. Children of other expats from the respective countries may be admitted as well, so it is worth checking if this type of schooling is offered by your embassy.

As a relic of Soviet times, Russia still provides free full-range healthcare services for all its citizens. Expats also have access to these services, so long as they hold a valid health insurance policy, funded by either themselves or their employer. However, those expats familiar with the public medical system have described treatment as ranging from “unacceptable” to merely “uncomfortable”. Additionally, doctors may charge you extra for medication and disposable needles.

In Moscow, however, the healthcare situation is much better than in other parts of Russia. There are hospitals and medical clinics which are well up to Western standards, some of them conveniently located in international neighborhoods. These clinics usually provide general and emergency care, and most of them have dental departments, too.

Here are some well-known international hospitals in Moscow:

  • Alliance Medicale
  • American Clinic
  • European Medical Center

In any case, comprehensive medical and dental insurance are a must for anyone moving to Moscow. The Western hospitals in particular can be very costly. Make sure that your insurance also covers medical evacuation for emergencies.

Driving Your Car: Get Ready for a Challenge

Driving in Moscow is much like driving in other megacities: traffic is terrible, especially during rush hour, traffic jams on some major roads do not clear between morning and evening rush hours, and parking spots are in short supply. Furthermore, many roads are in an almost constant state of disrepair. Occasionally, the police block major roads altogether to let government officials pass through unimpeded.

For those who do want to take on the challenge: once you hold a Russian residence permit, you may use your national driver’s license for the first 60 days after arrival, although this is worth checking with your local embassy. After this period, expats must apply for a Russian license. More information is available from the Russian General Administration of Traffic Safety (GIBDD) (website in Russian only).

Sit Back and Relax: Call a Cab

If you don’t want to rely on public transportation, you can use a taxi. Despite many people in Moscow hailing cabs on the street, we would advise expats to call or order them online in advance, due to the high numbers of illegal taxis on the roads. Although these can be cheaper than regular taxis, they are not regulated and can be dangerous for foreigners.

Instead, it is recommend to use apps and services like Uber, Yandex, or Gett to order a taxi, which in theory means you don’t even have to speak Russian. However, some taxi drivers may require you to negotiate a price to your destination beforehand, rather than using a taximeter or fixed rate.

Leisure and Culture: There’s Something for Everybody

In terms of cultural activities, there is enough on offer in Moscow to be busy every evening and weekend if you so choose. Despite St. Petersburg’s popularity, Moscow is still the center of Russia’s cultural life, and there are countless museums and galleries to explore. A performance of classical Russian ballet at the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre is also a must-see for any expat as is the Great Moscow State Circus.

Contemporary art in Moscow is also enjoying a renaissance. New exhibitions and venues are opening every year, with one of the powerhouses the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Gorky Park. It’s also worth checking out the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art and Artplay , both of which are located in former factories. The city also hosts the Moscow Biennale, which brings together artists and creatives from all over the world.

Of course, your leisure time in Moscow doesn’t have to be filled by cultural activities. There are plenty of beaches and other beautiful spots on the outskirts of the city which make perfect destinations for daytrips. In fact, many Muscovites spend their weekends at their dacha , their weekend home in the countryside.
